As a member of the Blue Star
Museum program, the Bennington
Museum has announced that all
active duty military personnel and
up to five members of their families
will receive free admission to the
museum through Labor Day,
September 3. The Bennington
Museum is part of more than 1,500
museums across the country partici-
pating in the program.
“As a Blue Star Museum, we are
delighted to welcome to the
Bennington Museum all active duty
military members and their families
as our guests,” said Acting Director
Edie Sawitsky. “It is a way of thank-
ing them for the sacrifices they make
every day.”
At a recent weekend drill, the
members of Bravo Troop, 1-172 CAV
(MTN), Vermont National Guard led by Captain Zachariah Fike stopped
by the museum to explore the mili-
tary gallery. They discussed the bat-
tle that took place in Bennington
with museum trustee Don Miller.
The Blue Star Museum program is
a collaboration with the National
Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star
Families, and the Department of
Defense. “This is both an opportunity
to thank military families for their
service and sacrifice, as well as a
chance to create connections between
museums and these families that will
continue throughout the year,” said
NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman.
Active Duty military includes
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines,
Coast Guard and active duty National
Guard and active duty Reserve mem-
bers. The complete list of participat-
ing museums is available at www.

Pulitzer Prize winner
Richard Russo returns to the
Northshire Bookstore at 7 p.m.
on Friday, June 22 with his
daughter, artist Kate Russo, to
discuss “Interventions,” their
tribute to the printed book.
The publication is actually a
packaged set of two stories, one
novella and a bittersweet trib-
ute to his hometown of
Gloversville, NY, which has
experienced significant decline
in recent years. What makes the
book special is the unusual for-
mat – each story is an individu-
ally soft-bound volume with a
cover illustration by Kate.
The Russos’ intention is for
the reader to experience the
work in a tangible way that only
a printed book can provide.
Richard Russo is also the author
of the best-selling “Empire
Falls.”
On Saturday, the bookstore
will present author James
Geary with his new book “I Is
an Other,” which examines how
every aspect of our day-to-day
experience is molded by meta-
phor. Geary is also the author
of The New York Times best-
seller “The World in a Phrase.”
For more information, call
the bookstore at 802-362-2200 or

The exhibit is the first to focus on Kent’s
life and work in Vermont from 1919 to 1925,
and the exhibit and accompanying catalog

who spent almost five years researching this
phase of the artist’s life, will give a slide pre-
sentation.
The program is free and open to the public.
