Summer in Manchester means the
return of the richest sporting event
in Vermont, as the Vermont Summer
Festival opens on July 4 at the Harold
Beebe Farm in East Dorset. The six-
week long hunter/jumper competi-
tion carries a purse of more than
$750,000 and attracts the best eques-
trian athletes, including Olympic
medalists, to vie for top honors.
This year’s festival will feature
courses created by six of the world’s
best course designers. Steve Stephens,
co-course designer at the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games, will design the
Grand Prix ring during the third
week of competition. Ken Krome,
assistant course designer for the 2010
FEI World Equestrian Games in
Lexington, KY, will set the course in
the Grand Prix ring during the fourth
week. Designers Alan Wade, Chris
Brandt, Michel Vaillancourt and Eric
Hasbrouck will design the course in
weeks one, two, five and six, respec-
tively.
The festival opens on July 4 with
the Vermont Summer Special. New
for 2012, the first five Sundays of the
Vermont Summer Festival will fea-
ture a $30,000 Grand Prix, culminat-
ing with the $50,000 Vermont Summer
Celebration Grand Prix on Saturday,
August 11.
For junior and amateur show
jumping competitors, the $10,000
Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic will
be the highlight each week, while
week six will feature a $15,000
Children’s/Adult Jumper Classic.
Weekly $10,000 Open Welcome Stake
classes, presented by Manchester
Designer Outlets, will be held each
Thursday.
The popular Hunter Derby series
will return this year, to be held each
Thursday for the first five weeks, and
culminating with a $15,000 Hunter
Derby on week six presented by
Oughton Limited of Vermont.
Events for the remainder of the
summer include the Manchester
Summer Festival Horse Show on July
11-15, the Manchester Classic Horse
Show on July 18-22, the Valley Classic
Horse Show on July 25-29, the
Manchester & the Mountains Horse
Show on August 1-5, and the Vermont
Summer Celebration on August 8-12.
The festival’s location at the Harold
Beebe Farm in East Dorset is the per-
fect site for the event. With its gor-
geous view of the Green Mountains,
the farm has a well-equipped hunter/
jumper facility with five all-weather
rings and one of the largest Grand
Prix fields in New England.

The Manchester Music
Festival will open its 38th sum-
mer concert series, “Music
Under the Stars,” with the high-
ly acclaimed Kalichstein-
Laredo-Robinson Trio, one of
the world’s most celebrated and
beloved classical music ensem-
bles, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday,
July 5 at the Southern Vermont
Art Center’s Arkell Pavilion on
West Road in Manchester.
“There are few chamber
music ensembles in the world
that carry such a mother-lode
of credentials as the
Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson
Trio,” said Ariel Rudiakov,
artistic director of MMF.
“Together they are the stan-
dard-bearers of the piano trio
literature and the most famous
ensemble of its kind active
today.”
Since its debut at the White
House some 35 years ago for
President Carter’s inaugura-
tion, the trio has maintained a
heavy tour schedule that has
taken across the globe from
Carnegie Hall and Lincoln
Center to Amsterdam, Brussels,
Hamburg, Vienna, London and
Paris.
Earlier this year, the group
was heralded by the Washington
Post as one of the “superstars”
of the chamber music world.
“It is truly an honor to have
these superstars as our distin-
guished guests,” said Rudiakov.
He added that the audience can
expect signature interpreta-
tions of Haydn’s Gypsy Rondo,
the piano trio in D minor by
Mendelssohn, and Schumann’s
soaring quintet for piano and
strings, performance Op. 47.
For the Schumann quintet,
the Trio will be joined by violist
Rudiakov and MMF faculty vio-
linist Joana Genova.
Tickets for the performance
are $45 for adults, with lawn
seating available for $15. To pur-
chase, contact the Manchester
Music Festival at 802-362-1956 or

“Decaying Landscapes” will
open on June 30 in the Regional
Artists Gallery at the
Bennington Museum. A recep-
tion for the artist will be held
from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on June 30.

from childhood, Creitz has spe-
cialized in photographing land-
scapes with dilapidated but
charming structures, most
notably the old Mary McClellan
Hospital in Cambridge, NY.
“With my work thus far, I
have tried to capture the con-
trast between natural and man-
made to show how nature will
ultimately overtake our own
trappings when we leave them
alone,” said Creitz.
Most recently, his work has
been on exhibit in venues
including the Southern
Vermont Art Center, the Barret
Art Center in Poughkeepsie,
and Landscapes for Landsakes
in Coila, NY.
