Last Meeting Notes

NCWA General Meeting Notes - October 3, 2017

The meeting was convened by NCWA President Dave Strauss at 7:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Lodge in Mt. Vernon.

Gary Danilson, Chair of the Membership Committee, indicated that FASTCAP will give a 10% discount on all in store purchases.

Greg Koenker, Chair of the Education Committee, reviewed the availability of openings for classes and asked the membership to please call Carol Osterman when they cannot attend a class that they have scheduled. This allows Carol to fill the vacancy with someone from the waiting list. Greg also asked people to sign up for classes even if they are filled as this gives the NCWA an idea of the demand for that type of class.

David Vandette, Chair of the Shows Committee, thanked everyone for their help and participation during the Woodfest and Anacortes Arts Festival. He indicated that the NCWA would participate in those same events during the coming year. Woodfest will be in April and the Arts Festival will be in August this coming year.

Bill Rawls indicated that the November program would be the Toys for Tots program.

John Bellinger announced that the Fall Shop Tour would be held on October 21. Four members have generously opened their shops for viewing as well as Skagit Slabs which will give a demonstration of cutting live edge slabs.

Bring & Brag. o Tim Wynn displayed a small side table that was ‘just the right size’ to be used for his computer mouse. He used

spalted maple and Jatoba. It was finished with a rob on Poly and wax. o Bill Pierce showed us a beautiful Rococo business card holder made out of mahogany and maple. The card

holder showcased both carving and joinery. He finished it with an oil/poly/boiled linseed mixture. o Bill Rawls exhibited something that was either a table or a headboard but could be either. It was made out of

Cherry and finished with Polyurethane.

Jim Baker won the raffle for the Lee Nielsen Block Plane. Congrats, Jim.

Program. Ken & Holly Barbo delivered a wonderful tutorial on repair and restoration of furniture. It included many of the tricks and tips that Ken & Holly have developed over the years. Just a few of these are:

o You need lots and lots of clamps & jigs of all types. o They use Titebond III glue predominantly. o Finishing & touch up are the hardest part of the repair job. o Matching colors is an art that requires experience and patience.

Test colors on hidden areas Color laquer with base colors.

o Never use Pledge furniture polish. o Here is Holly’s source for Mohawk products: https://www.woodshopproducts.com o Use Jasco for stripping finish. Added Information from Holly: “Last night I mentioned stripping with Jasco (Jasco

Premium Paint and Epoxy Remover). It’s strong stuff, which is what is needed for tough projects…BUT it needs to be handled carefully. I said to wear gloves but didn’t elaborate. Jasco can eat through gloves just as lacquer thinner (your final step before you move on to the sanding) can. I get special heavy duty gloves at Hardware Sales that are thick rubber and designed to be used with solvents. I have an old metal coffee can handy for the scraped off finish. Once the finish is off I scrub down the wood with Lacquer thinner. This neutralizes the Jasco and follow up by wiping off the piece completely with industrial paper towels. It is important to note that Jasco can burn you if it comes in contact with your skin. That’s why the tough gloves. If some inadvertently gets on you… you will know right away. Immediately put lacquer thinner on the spot. Instantly neutralizes. Once everything air dries you can sand.”

The members present appreciated the information and especially the tips and tricks presented by Holly and Ken. If you weren’t there, you missed a good one.

Volunteers Needed for Website Committee

The NCWA Board and quite a few members have expressed a desire to have a better photo gallery as well as an online forum to allow members to more easily share tips and ask questions. There many different options available to allow us to share “user generated content” online. Maintaining the NCWA website has been a one-person operation for many years. However, I don’t have enough free time to take on the additional responsibility of managing user-generated content. We need the participation of additional members to make this happen. The Website Committee will first need to evaluate the pros, cons, and costs of the various options available to us. All of those options will require some kind of user account management and/or content moderation. After selecting an option we will need one or more committee members to commit to ongoing account management and/or moderation. If you are interested in joining the Website Committee and helping to expand the reach and impact of the NCWA website, please contact Mike Titus at 360-389-7009 or [email protected]

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES - 2018

Yes, it is that time again – time to renew your membership for 2018! Earlier this year the Board voted to increase the annual dues from $30.00 to $35.00. With this small increase the club wants to make sure we have the funds to attract interesting speakers for our monthly programs, to continue to invest in improved audio & video equipment and to maintain our other programs. Benefits of membership include:

NCWA woodworking classes,

Discounts from our vendor support group,

Library books and CDs,

Shop tours

Monthly membership meetings

Special events (Woodfest, Anacortes Arts Fest, etc.), and

The opportunity to associate with the best group of woodworkers in the Northwest. You can pay your dues (cash or check) at one of our regular meetings (the November meeting works) or you can mail your check payable to: NCWA, c/o Al Ashley, 26220 48th Ave NE, Arlington, WA 98223.

For Raffle in Sedro-Woolley Museum

During WoodFest in April 2017, our NCWA/Toys For Tots area was next to the Sedro-Woolley Museum booth. The Museum folks admired the Toys For Tots children’s activities, Builder Boards and car building, as well as the finished toys on display. Carolyn Freeman, President of the Sedro-Woolley Museum, asked John Braun to make a toy train for their Annual Model Railroad Open House scheduled for Sunday, February 11th, 2018. The purpose was to include the train in their Raffle. Much to their surprise and delight, John produced a masterpiece! 65 inches long with locomotive, tender, three cars and a caboose, all on its own wooden track section. When the train was delivered, Carolyn and her Staff’s responses were Wow! Excited! Terrific! More than we expected! They expressed much appreciation for John’s generosity and craftsmanship. They will attach cards identifying NCWA and John Braun as the builder/donor.

Thanks, John, for a job well done!“

Greetings and Happy Holidays to all NCWA Members:

Fall has arrived and that can only mean one thing! Ok, fine, it can mean a LOT of things. But here is one of those things. The December meeting will be the annual Christmas extravaganza and you will be getting e-mails and hearing announcements about that evening. This message is about PART of that evening. It's the PRESIDENT'S CHALLENGE! So, here's the deal. We want as many members as we can get to bring something they have made for Christmas. This can be an ornament or some other kind of decoration. OR, it can be something you have made for someone special as a gift. And just think how refreshing and uncharacteristic it would be to actually have completed it by December 5! And if it turns out well, you might even have time to make another one. So, start planning now and let's make this part of the Christmas party the best ever. And in case this pep talk didn't do it for you, all entries will be entered into a drawing for a $5O gift certificate from Lee Valley-Veritas! That's it. That's all I have. Merry Christmas and I will see you at the PRESIDENT'S CHALLENGE! Jim Bucknell

Meet King Dahl

King Dahl recently moved to the Bellingham area from Las Vegas and needed a little help with some woodworking projects. He found Tom Dolese through the internet and Tom gave him the help he needed to build two stunning furniture projects for his home in Sudden Valley. He had already done some very nice outdoor furniture out of cedar and now he’s hooked on woodworking. King considers himself semi-retired from a 35 year career as an event designer using a wide range of materials and mediums. He has always had a passion for art, environmental aesthetics and music, so he began working as a designer in the LA area, and eventually formed his own design company. In 2003, he moved to Vegas where he headed up a team of over 100 people at MGM Resorts Event Productions. King’s woodworking focus is currently on designing pieces with beautiful live edge wood that he’s found locally. He’s already enrolled in the Router Basics class and is interested in learning as much as he can through other classes. Oh, by the way, King is also an accomplished double bass jazz player and is designing a wooden stand for his instrument! Jerry Couchman

Meet Adam Mohr

MEET THE NEW MEMBER Adam Mohr grew up in Tempe Arizona and has always liked to use his hands. He has spent the last 11 years in the US Coast Guard and is currently stationed in Bellingham. Almost all of his time in the Coast Guard has been spent as an engine mechanic although he did do some duty as a Coast Guard Airman. Most Coast Guard Machinery Technicians learn their skills in formal schools, but Adam learned on his own and passed all the required tests. After moving to Bellingham, he became interested in learning woodworking skills to make improvements for his home. He’s been gradually building up his tool inventory and has taken on some serious projects; a reception desk for a local yoga studio built with reclaimed wood and a neighbor’s deck project. Adam, his wife Taylor and their two children are in the process of moving to a new house on 10 acres that has a beautiful shop building, so it looks like his woodwork load will increase! NCWA Board of Directors Meeting October 11, 2017

The meeting was convened at 7:00 p.m. by President Dave Strauss at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Mt. Vernon.

Members Present: Dale Brandland, Gary Danilson, Bill Rawls, David Vandette, Jerry Anderson, Phil Choquette, Jim Redding, Mike Chaplin, Mike Titus, John Braun, Charley Drake, Dave Strauss, David Shull, Al Ashley, Tim Wynn.

Al Ashley gave the monthly and quarterly treasurer’s report. o As of Oct. 11, the NCWA has $7,614.14 in its checking and savings accounts. o As of Oct. 11, the association has 217 paid members. This includes 46 new members this year. o Al indicated that we had not received a billing for food from the Turner’s club for the August BBQ. He

estimated that the bill should be about $275. o Al indicated that he has started collecting dues for next year. 50 members have already paid. o The quarterly report has the NCWA in good shape with expenditures on track or slightly under projections.

Dale Brandland gave a report on the Ad Hoc Committee looking at the clubs future. He indicated that the observations and recommendations are being gathered together and will shortly be shared with the rest of the membership. Dale hopes to implement some of the recommendations by the beginning of the year.

Dave Strauss led the discussion on a nominating committee for elections in December. After some discussion, it was decided that Dale Brandland, Mike Chaplin, David Shull, and, possibly, Jerry Couchman would form the nominating committee.

Mike Titus, the Webmaster updated the BOD on the website. o The website has moved to a new server. NCWA will have to pay for web hosting and the domain name each

year. o Website traffic has dropped slightly although we are still getting approximately 1000 visits per month. o Mike indicated that he would like to form a committee to help expand the website to perhaps host a discussion

forum. BOD was very supportive of this effort. Mike will put out a notice to see if he can get some volunteers to help.

Mike Chaplin gave a report on the sound system upgrade. o The association had two new types of sound mikes at the October General Meeting. They were a definite

improvement in the sound for the program. o Mike indicated that we needed a volunteer to operate a sound mixing board during the meeting so that

adjustments in volume could be made for the various speakers. Mike will canvass for a volunteer.

The BOD discussed replacements for some key leadership and operating positions. o Greg Robinson & Tom Thornton will be replacing Jim Hickey to coordinate the tool raffle at the General

Meetings. o John Braun has decided to stay on as Chair of the Toys for Tots committee but will need a lot more

participation to pull it off. o Ian Pollock, Chris Abshire, and Craig Edwards have volunteered to manage the coffee and cookies for the

General Meetings replacing long time manager, Jim Houston.

Bill Rawls discussed the upcoming programs. o November will be the Toys for Tots. Bill will introduce and hand it over to John Braun. o Christmas Party is on track according to Gary Danilson. We will have President’s Challenge.

Shop Tours. o Al will send out the notice in a couple of days. Tour will end at Skagit Slabs. o Spring Shop Tour will be in Anacortes.

Education Committee is preparing a list of classes for the remainder of the year.

New Business. o LaConner contacted Bill Rawls to ask if the NCWA wanted to refurbish their sign. After discussion, it was

decided that this was not a task that the NCWA wanted to do.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

NCWA ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DINNER

Just a reminder that our December 5th meeting will be our annual Christmas Dinner at Hillcrest Lodge. As always, all

members are invited to bring a guest for what is always a good time. Our club elves have been busy collecting some great

items for our Toys For Tots Raffle which will again include a $300 gift certificate from Lee Valley and we've just had a 9 ft

slab donated by Tony Hawes of Skagit Slabs. Of course we'll also have some nice items in the raffle for those spouses who

might not be woodworkers. Look for an email invitation requesting your RSVP soon.

See you there.

Note From Tom Dolese

I was asked to help promote the Furniture Intensive class that is coming up in January at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking. It’s a 12 week course, taught by a number of instructors including Seth Rolland (who will be presenting to the club in February) and me. We taught this class last Spring and I thought it was a unique opportunity for the students to learn a great deal in a relatively short time. They produced some impressive pieces in the class and all went home well on their way to being accomplished woodworkers. It was a lot of fun for them and us. The members might know of folks interested in taking this course. https://www.ptwoodschool.org/furniture-making-12-week-intensive
