President’s Message
Presidents Message
The calendar tells me it is spring but I am not sure I believe it! The rain has certainly been annoying but has-
n’t dampened (ha, ha!) my desire to get outside and train with my dogs! Some of our club members had snow
in Idaho and Montana recently but were still training at field events! I guess when you have a breed that
wants to be outside, it’s time to layer up, bring on the rain gear and head out into the elements!
It was exciting to see such a great turn out at the Chintimini Kennel Club show in Albany, OR for our Sup-
ported Entry, Specialty planning meeting and Annual Dinner! We had club members from CA, OR, WA, ID,
MT and AK present for the weekend show! Fundraising for the 2019 Specialty started at our Annual Dinner
with the sale of flashy FCR magnets and a raffle with many items being donated by members.
The 2019 FCRSA Specialty is fast approaching! Mark you calendars to attend some or all of the Specialty
being held June 14th – 21st, 2019 in Albany, OR. Many of our club members have taken on key chairman roles
but more help is needed! If taking on a Chair position is not possible for you, consider volunteering to help on
a committee. We will need help in many different areas and have many possibilities for you contribute your
time and talents! If you can’t commit to being present for the entire Specialty, plan on coming for a few days
as the experience is like no other dog show. Field, agility, obedience, rally, Junior showmanship and confor-
mation events will be held in addition to social and education events. Contact Lura Dunn, Joyce Brackney or
Jo Chinn if you want to help!
Lura Dunn, NWFCRC President

Slurpy in Seattle: Meet the Breeds at the SKC Show
Sloppy, slurpy kisses! The northwest flatcoats shared their love with the adoring public at the Seattle Kennel
Club show in March. Rick Oswald organized six northwest flatcoats to participate in the Meet the Breed
event, but eleven hyper-social dogs showed up! There were hugs and kisses for everyone.

Our Dogs
Swiftwater Brags from Susan Kravit-Smith
At the February show in Albany Swiftwater My Foolish Heart, Juno, won a 5 point major towards her GCh winning BOS over several nice bitch specials and class girls. She is taking a break from the conformation ring to focus on agility competition and dock diving. Then hopefully motherhood later this summer!
Half brother Izzy was winner’s dog two days at the February show in Albany for a three point major one of the days. The litter sired by Juno’s brother Fred in BC is doing well, with one of the pups going best baby pup-py in show recently. Fred earned his CGC and qualified to enter the therapy dog training program in Canada. And the pups of sister Pepper’s litter are all looking great too. Brother Bowen recently began dock diving and earned his Dock Junior title his first weekend out. He also earned a Trick Dog Novice and a CGC. Half sister Pai went reserve to a 5 point major the weekend of the supported entry in Albany and is doing well training in obedience . +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Barb Fowler sends us this info: Hiya (Shasta Meet and Greet RN TKA WC) finished her BCAT last week-end. She got faster every run. Her last run was 8.18 seconds for a speed of 25.02mph.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Lisa Anderson shares her success: Revan earned his first CDX leg on his 3rd birthday 3/11 taking a fourth
place finish from Open B. He was moved to Open B to avoid a potential ring conflict (he is my first dog to
get a CDX leg with) and had no issues taking the exercises in a random order. He is CH Wingover’s Potenti-
um Philosophy BN CD JH CGC WC with one SH and now one CDX leg!

Our Dogs
A quick message from Cathy Johnson: MBIS MRBIS IntCH GCHP Can GCH Windy Hill God Of Fire RN JH CGC HOF) he just won his 18th Best In Show Sunday April 15, 2018 under Mrs. Nancy Liebes. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ And a note and picture from Sue and Frank Coccia: We would like to brag that our 7 month old Cheech (Shasta Vente Cappuccino) has a fine taste for only the oldest and most expensive Persian rugs. Other than that, he's perfect!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
From Suzanne Eberfeld: I am so proud of my new puppy Julia (Shannara's Light o' Love at Stratford, co-owned with Traci Spires). The Supported Entry in Albany, OR was her very first show and she went Re-serve Winner's Bitch to the 5 point major (consisting of 14 class bitches) from the 9-12 mo. Puppy Class! A big thank you goes out to Dinah Bag-genstos for making Julia so comfortable in her first show and showing her so beautifully. Another and even bigger thank you goes out to the NWFCRC members at the annual dinner who raised a glass and toasted my best girl Gilly (AM CAN CH Stratford's Love-In-Idleness CGC) who, at almost 14 yrs. old, strutted her stuff in the 11 yrs. and Older Veteran Bitch Class. I was deeply touched and so very proud of my "very vital veteran" (as she was described by the Sweeps judge at the 2016 National Specialty!).
We can all share in the excitement as more and more of our beloved Flat Coats are going strong well into their "double digit" years. We can be proud as breeders that we are utilizing the better informational sources available to us to make breeding choices that are dramatically improving the longevity of our beloved breed. Twenty years ago it was relatively rare to see dogs achieving 12 years or older but today we can see so many still thriving at that age and beyond. This is indeed something we can all cele-brate!
From Rick Oswald: CH Wyncliff’s Wild Violet completed her HRC/UKC Started Hunt Test Title on April
8th in the rain along with a half dozen other FCR;s. Among the others gaining their titles was her brother
Henry! The spring hunt test was put on by the Cascade Hunting Retrievere Club at Lord Hill Duck Club a
couple miles west of Monroe, Wa. Violet also got Best of Opposite at the Seattle Kennel club AKC show on
March 11th!

Flatcoat Daze
Richard Harper recently sent his annual invitation to Flatcoat Daze.:
Time to think about brushing off the snow and starting thinkin about eating some brats, chicken, beverage, and
FLATTIES!! For those of you who could not make it last year, what an awesome day! GREAT weath-
er! Great dogs and great people! There was more than 50 flatties in attendance (several puppies & dogs under
1 year) roaming the 160 acre property. Needless to say, the puppies melted everyone's heart! A VERY spe-
cial thanks to Joe & Carolyn Bersch for giving up their Rudder Ranch for the weekend. Several folks camped
on the property Friday & Saturday nights.
We had several new attendees this year. For you breeders in our list, please keep me in the loop for your
breeding/litter plans so I may pass your info on to others.
Lots of sunshine, homemade brats, bbq chicken, side dishes and munchies. Did I mention we also had some
brew? Here is the link to the pics -

Thanks to all of you for supporting our only DAZE goal of bringing Flatcoat owners and breeders together in a
fun atmosphere to keep the breed strong, to network and share information, and to introduce new people to the
breed and breeders.
Best,
Rick

***SAVE THE DATE***
5 days of Flat-coat field training bliss
in Mission Valley, Montana!
WHO: You and your Flat-coat(s). All levels welcome,
especially newbies.
WHAT: Field training (and lots of sight seeing and
recreational opportunities). Live flyers will be available.
WHEN: Wednesday, August 29 - Sunday, September 2 (day before labor day). Come for any and all days.
WHERE: 45 minutes north of Missoula and 20 minutes south of Flathead Lake
lies a land of retriever legend and lore. With over 30 properties developed
specifically for retriever field training, daytime temps in the 70s, and a 360º
panorama of jaw-dropping scenery, it’s no wonder retriever enthusiasts from
across the country flock to the valley each summer and have dubbed it “Retriever
Paradise.” Area lakes, rivers, streams, mountains, museums and towns offer
endless recreational and sight seeing opportunities. Glacier NP is 2 hours away.
WHY: To share good times with great people and dogs. To discover a new passion
for field training, or reignite an old one. To build skills, trouble shoot a training
problem, and share training tips. To celebrate our breed doing the work they were
bred for.
Details to follow, including recommendations for accommodations, a fee schedule
(nominal daily fees will cover costs of birds, ammo, and bird boys), and an RSVP
with questionnaire to help guide us in developing the training groups. Depending
on interest, a WC/X may be added to the week’s events. Questions in the
meantime? Contact Xan Latta at: [email protected] or (406) 303-1325
Editor’s note: WoW WOW WOW. What an opportunity! The Chinn family is definitely
going ! Hope lots of our northwest flatcoat friends will join us!

National Specialty
Fetch is bringing the national specialty back to Oregon! Save June 14-21, 2019 for exciting flatcoat
action at the field in Scio and the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany. FCR people love to come to the Ore-
gon specialty because the grounds and facilities are fabulous, the hotels are conveniently located next to the
show grounds, the food is outrageous, and of course, the Northwest Flatcoat Club members are so kind and so
helpful! We aim to present a stress-free specialty for our guests (and for ourselves!)
Volunteers have stepped up to take on the committee chair positions, but many workers are still need-
ed. Some tasks require people skills, other require computer skills. Take a look at the following pages to see
where your skills best fit, and then step forward!
