Northwest Leadership Associates presents an invitation to apply for the position of EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Washington Interscholastic Activities Association ABOUT THE POSITION The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Executive Board seeks an outstanding association leader to apply for the position of Executive Director. Mike Colbrese will retire June 30, 2019, after twenty-five years of exemplary service to the association. The Board invites applications through January 3, 2019. The Association consists of nearly 800 member high schools and middle/junior high schools, both public and private, and is divided into nine geographic service districts. The 15-member state staff administers Association policies, rules and regulations, and provides other assistance and service to member schools. The WIAA oversees athletics and fine arts in Washington state and hosts 120 WIAA state championship events for the following sports and activities: baseball, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, dance/drill, debate, drama, football, golf, gymnastics, music, softball, swimming & diving, soccer, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. WIAA State Championships run from early November through late May. These programs provide students with valuable life skills and are an integral part of the total education process. The WIAA does not receive any funding via tax dollars, nor does it receive any financial support from the State of Washington. The WIAA is funded primarily through ticket sales for state tournaments and other events. Additional funding is derived from sponsorships, membership fees, a percentage of merchandise sales and other minimal items. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES In a recent survey, WIAA stakeholders ranked the followingkey responsibilities of the Executive Director in this order:

LeadershipLeads development of a vision for the future of theAssociation; acts as an effective spokesperson forthe Association.

OrganizationalManagement Ex-officio member of the Executive Board;recommends appropriate policies, procedures, actionsand budgets; assures efficient business practices;employs and supervises staff.

CommunicationsKeeps members informed of Association events andactivities; visits each region periodically.

Member Relations and ServicesDevelops appropriate professional learning activities;creates timely publications; and provides counsel andassistance to WIAA members upon request.

Inter-agency RelationsMaintains liaisons with educational associations(including, but not limited to the AWSP, WASA,WSSDA) and state agencies (includig, not not limitedto, the OSPI and the SBE.)

Government RelationsProvides leadership in generating WIAA's Legislativeplatform; collaborates with other agencies andorganizations in legislative efforts.

QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONSThe Executive Board is seeking a recognized educationalleader with the following qualities and qualifications:

Possesses a vision for the future of the Association.

Commands a high work ethic and recognizes,respects, and utilizes the individual talents of others.

Excellence in oral and written communication skillswith the ability to listen and respond.

Experience in building strategic alliances with a widevariety of groups and organizations.

An understanding of the legislative/political process.
