~ Director’s Corner ~ Our 2016 season officially began with the first contest of the year, in Shelton Washington on May 13 th - 16 th . Attendance was a bit lower than last year, but it was a great event none the less. More details on the event from Tom Strom. Our second event of the season is also now in the books. The North Idaho Qualifier was held on June 17 th - 19 th in Athol Idaho. There were 21 contestants, and we had some new faces attend the event. We battled some weather on Saturday, but we were able to still able to complete 4 rounds. More details on the event from CD and Area Coordinator Tim McGee. There are 2 more contests on the schedule with the next event in Vernon BC on July 15 th - 17 th . This is always a fun and well run event. I hope to see many of you there. The last contest here in the North West before the NWSAM Championship, is in North Plains Oregon on July 29 th - 31 st . Scott Enochs will CD the contest again this year. With all that being said, that means that the NWSAM Championship is rapidly approaching. I hope everyone has made plans and reservations to attend the 6 th Annual “Best in the West” NWSAM Championship. Things are shaping up that this will be our largest attendance so far. The dates are September 8 th - 11 th . I hope you can make it! There have also been several scale and warbird fly-ins so far this year. If any of you were able to attend any of these fly-ins, send in some pictures and a report on the event. Please check the web page for event locations and dates. Paul Fleming updates the web page frequently with event information as we receive it. Many of the event flyers are also available on the web site and are able to be down loaded and printed. Our annual NWSAM business meeting will be held on Friday September 9 th at 7 p.m. at the WRAF Clubhouse. Starting the 1 st of August, nominations for the positions of Director and Vice Director will be accepted. It’s hard for me to believe it’s been 2 years already! The food at Shelton was again this year far above what one generally finds at these type of events. Nice job folks! This year we managed to get the competition schedule spread out enough so we have a little breathing room between events. This spread out schedule has allowed us to fit in several new noncompetitive events while still leaving s few weekends open to mow the lawn. We will try keeping the same weekends reserved for the qualifiers and championships in years to come. In the last newsletter I asked for feedback about sponsoring noncompetitive events and the response was good, with most respondents willing to host or work these events. If you look at the NWSAM web page /events you will see we have quite a schedule.

The competition season is well underway. Our first two events in Shelton Washington, and Athol Idaho were well attended. The winds and weather made things a little sporting at times, but both events ran very smoothly.

Not to beat a dead horse, but we are not doing too well getting people to train to be judges. We always seem to have just enough judges to run an event. In Idaho Tim McGee the CD had to do some real creative scheduling to allow the judges to fly between scoring classes they were not competing in. We had a great time, but you really had to pay attention to where you needed to be to fly or to judge.

Things are starting to move fast now: July 9th Dawn Patrol in Shelton, WA, July 15th – 17th July BC Scale Classic in Vernon BC, July 23rd Warbirds Over Whatcom in Bellingham, WA, July 29th – 31st Oregon Scale Qualifier in North Plains, OR. Two competitions and two fun events equals a perfect month!

See you at the field

Hello from Alberta! We have been very lucky this spring as the snow melted quickly and we were flying a month ahead of schedule! My 1/3 DVII has been flying and all in all, it’s a great flying model! Through the wonder of social media I have been able to exchange messages with Greg Hahn and Dan Landis, they both fly the Balsa USA 1/3 DVII. Their knowledge and advice has been extremely helpful in the trimming process and prop choices for my DVII. Thank you very much guys!!! I will be attending the B.C. Scale Masters in Vernon this year, July 15-17. I am looking forward to competing with the DVII! My dad and I will also be entering Team Scale with our 9 year old 1/4 Balsa USA Fokker Dr1. Should be lots of fun!!

The Edmonton Radio Control Society held their annual Scale Fun Fly on June 10-13. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t cooperate and there was little to no flying. We will look at maybe re-scheduling for later in the summer/fall. The Calgary Aero Modelers are hosting a Scale Fun Fly with one day of competitive judging. This event will be held at their field in Irricana, AB just north of Calgary August 6-7. The scale judging will take place on Sunday. I will be attending to support this event in hopes that it will become an annual spot on the scale competition calendar! http://www.ercs.ab.ca/ http://vrcas.org/ http://www.crams.ca/#!events/citr Have a safe and enjoyable summer and remember…… it’s not so much about the destination but more so about the journey to get there!
