Kayla Morin has been an all-around force for the Wildcats in her four year career. She is the active leader on the team with 877 digs and also has 1,011 kills and 210 blocks. Only eight players in program history have eclipsed both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

SETTING FOR SUCCESSJunior setter Taylor Tashima takes the lead on the

Wildcats’ strong offensive attack. Tashima has 946 assists in 30 matches, good for 8.92 per set. That number ranks 11th in the Big Ten. 10 Wildcats other than Tashima have

recorded kills this season with five notching more than 100 this season.

TAKE HOME THE HARDWARETwo Wildcats received all-tournament recognition during non-conference

play. Symone Abbott was named to the Dayton All-Tournament team on Sept. 3 after posting 46 kills, 20 digs

and three aces in a trio of matches. Gabrielle Hazen earned the honor at the Northern Iowa tournament

with 28 kills and nine blocks in three matches.

SERVE’S UPThe Wildcats have served 116 aces this season as a

team led by Taylor Tashima’s career high 26. The ‘Cats have served five or more aces eight times this season, including a season-high nine against George Washington in the season opener. The ‘Cats served eight in a four-set win over No. 24 Purdue on Oct. 21. Five Northwestern players (Taylor Tashima- 26, Symone Abbott - 20, Sofia Lavin - 18, Maddie Slater - 14 and Rafae Strobos -

10) have served double-digit aces this year.

TRIED AND TESTEDThe Wildcats have faced or will face 17 teams who appeared

in the 2015 NCAA tournament. They also have 13 matches against teams who were ranked and receiving votes at the end of last season.

Northwestern plays six conference matches against the four teams predicted to finish at the top of the conference -- Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn

State.

FLYING HIGHNorthwestern kicked off the 2016 season with one of the best hitting performances in school history. The Wildcats attacked at a .494 clip against George Washington in a season-opening sweep with 48 kills and only seven errors. Four players hit over .500 during the match. The .494 mark was the fourth-highest total in program history and the best performance since 1998.

NU ERAThe Wildcats named Shane Davis as the new head coach before the 2016 season. Davis previously was the men’s volleyball coach at Loyola University for the last 12 years. He led the Ramblers to three straight national semifinals and back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2014 and 2015.

Davis brings with him Erin Virtue as associate head coach, Kevin Moore as an assistance coach, and Patrick Barry as a volunteer assistant. Virtue previously served as an assistant coach at Michigan for five years while Moore was the associate head coach of the women’s team at Loyola. Barry was a volunteer assistant last year under Moore at Loyola.

Davis became the fourth head coach in program history to win his debut and the second to start a career with four straight wins.

USA PEDIGREEErin Virtue was the head coach of the USA Girls’ Youth National Team in July at the 2016 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Virtue is in her first year as the associate head coach of the Wildcats. Her team brought home the silver medal from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

OLYMPIC TRAININGNorthwestern spent the first week of its preseason at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Senior setter Caleigh Ryan blogged about the team’s

trip for NUsports.com and reported that, along with team bonding, the Wildcats’ trip was highlighted by meeting Paralympic and Winter Olympic athletes. Playing volleyball in Colorado was made tougher by the altitude change, but the team focused on

implementing new offensive and defensive schemes under its new coaching staff.

NATIONAL AUDIENCE ONThe Wildcats were on national television three times this season. Their road matchup at Ohio State on Sept. 28 was televised on BTN along with home matches against Michigan on Oct. 12 and Indiana on Oct. 23.

OFF TO A QUICK STARTThe Wildcats have enjoyed hot starts to the beginning of their seasons the past two years. In August and September of 2015, they were 10-4, while they were 12-1 in August and September of 2014. The Wildcats have finished above .500 in the months of August and September every year since 2008.

ONE LAST TIMENorthwestern is playing its final season before Welsh-Ryan Arena undergoes a $110 million renovation, with anticipated completion before the start of the 2018 season.

WATCH EVERY HOME MATCH IN 2016Each of Northwestern’s 10 home matches will be available to stream online. Two of those matches will air nationally on the Big Ten Network, while seven conference matches will be available on BTN2Go. The Oct. 21 match vs. Purdue will be streamed online via NU Studio Live.

HEAD COACH BIO

Shane Davis was hired as the sixth head coach in Northwestern volleyball program history on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015 by Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips.

“Shane Davis is unquestionably one of the top coaches in the nation, in any sport, and we are thrilled to welcome him, along with Andrea, Sydney and Jordyn to the Northwestern family,” said Phillips. “His remarkable record of success on the court speaks for itself, and his commitment to the development of his student-athletes outside competition is profound. He is the perfect fit to deliver a world-class experience academically, socially and athletically to our young women, and lead our program into the future in the best volleyball conference in the country.” During a 12-year career at the helm of the Loyola University men’s volleyball program, Davis built a powerhouse in Rogers Park, leading the Ramblers to three straight national semifinals and back-to-back NCAA championships in 2014 and 2015, compiling a career record of 265-88 and winning four Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Coach of the Year honors. “After 18 wonderful years at Loyola, both as a student-athlete and head coach, I am ready to begin a new chapter,” said Davis. “I am humbled and honored for this opportunity to lead the Wildcats volleyball program. Northwestern is a world-class institution with an extremely proud and supportive athletic department in the city I have called home for more than half my life. My family is rooted in Chicago and I am thrilled to remain here while leading an outstanding team to great heights. “I want to thank President Morty Schapiro and Jim Phillips for defining the vision of this program and allowing me to be a part of it. The potential of this team is incredible and I can’t wait to get to work.” Since taking over the Ramblers in 2004, Davis has coached 12 All-Americans, including both the 2015 AVCA National Player of the Year and 2015 AVCA Newcomer of the Year. He has also mentored 43 All-MIVA selections, including four MIVA Players of the Year. Off the court Davis has built a culture of success in the classroom, as 13 Ramblers were named to the MIVA Academic All-Conference Team last season. The Denver, Iowa, native was a member of Loyola’s men’s volleyball team from 2000-03, during which time he set a school record for career assists (5,337) and reached second place on the school leaderboard in career digs (723). He was named Loyola’s 2003 Male Athlete of the Year after a season in which he earned First Team All-MIVA recognition for the third time, as well as Second Team All-America honors.
