Andrew Weil was born in Philadelphia in 1942, received an A.B. degree in biology (botany) from Harvard in 1964 and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1968. After completing a medical internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco, he worked for a year with the National Institute of Mental Health, then wrote his first book, The Natural Mind. From 1971-75, as a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs, Dr. Weil traveled widely in North and South America and Africa collecting information on drug use in other cultures, medicinal plants, and

alternative methods of treating disease. From 1971-84 he was on the research staff of the Harvard Botanical Museum and conducted investigations of medicinal and psychoactive plants.

At present Dr. Weil is Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he also holds the Lovell-Jones Endowed Chair in Integrative Rheumatology and is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health. The Center is the leading effort in the world to develop a comprehensive curriculum in integrative medicine. Graduates serve as directors of integrative medicine programs throughout the United States. Through its Fellowship and Integrative Medicine in Residency curricula, the Center is now training doctors and nurse practitioners around the world.

Dr. Weil is the editorial director of the popular website, Dr. Weil.com (www.drweil.com), and appears in video programs featured on PBS. Dr. Weil is the founder and Chairman of the Weil Foundation, and the Chairman of Weil Lifestyle. He is also a founder and co-owner of the growing group of True Food Kitchen restaurants. Dr. Weil writes a monthly column for Prevention magazine and the popular Dr. Andrew Weil’s Self Healing monthly newsletter. A frequent lecturer and guest on talk shows, Dr. Weil is an internationally recognized expert on medicinal plants, alternative medicine, and the reform of medical education. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.

Andrew Weil is the author of many scientific and popular articles and of 13 books, including his latest, True Food: Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure. Oxford University Press is currently producing the Weil Integrative Medicine Library, a series of volumes for clinicians in various medical specialties.

Dr. Melinda Ring serves as the Medical Director of Northwestern Medicine Osher Center of Integrative Medicine in Chicago, IL. While

earning her medical degree and completing her residency at the University of Chicago, Dr. Ring’s passion for complementary and integrative medicine evolved along with her holistic philosophy of needing to treat the whole person, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual, to achieve true health and healing. Following residency, she completed the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of

Arizona. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Integrative Medicine, and cares for patients with a wide variety of conditions and preventive health needs.

In her roles at Northwestern, she oversees the clinical outpatient and inpatient programs, as well as medical student and resident education in Integrative Medicine. She leads a wonderful team of talented practitioners who work together to truly integrate the best of the world’s medicine. This integrative approach facilitates healing and helps patients reach their goals for wellness with a greater sense of personal control.

She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. Her expertise is reflected in her contribution to textbooks, lectures and research articles in the field of Women’s Health and Integrative Medicine. In 2013 Rodale Books published her 1st book on integrative women’s health, The Natural Menopause Solution. She serves on the executive committee of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health, a group of 61 highly esteemed national academic centers whose mission is “to help transform medicine and healthcare through rigorous scientific studies, new models of clinical care, and innovative educational programs that integrate biomedicine, the complexity of human beings, the intrinsic nature of healing, and the rich diversity of therapeutic systems.”

The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine blends conventional medicine with complementary and integrative disciplines such as acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, bodywork, naturopathic medicine and mind-body medicine to help patients optimize their health and prevent chronic disease. The center focuses on providing innovative clinical care options, conducting research on integrative treatment approaches, and educating both the community and healthcare providers about integrative medicine to promote health and wellness.

The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine is the premier integrative health resource in greater Chicago and – as of 2014 – one of only five institutions selected by the Bernard Osher Foundation to advance integrative medicine research, clinical treatment and education programs.

Under the direction of Melinda Ring, M.D., assistant clinical professor of medicine and medical director of the center, the Osher clinical team consciously blends the very best of conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary medicine practices from around the world to deliver the highest quality, personalized health care. The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine also acts as the trusted resource for integrative medicine education for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern Medicine, and the Chicagoland community. The center’s research on the role of practices such as mindfulness meditation and acupuncture has been presented at international congresses.
