Hymn Notes: “Fairest Lord Jesus” (630) Little is known of the true origin of this hymn but there are several popu- lar legends. One of the best known accounts is that the tune was sung by the 12 th century German Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. It was called “Crusaders Hymn.” Probably more likely is that it was a folksong sung by follow- ers of the reformer John Hus who settled in Silesia (now part of Poland) in 1620. The text first appeared in the Roman Catholic Munster Gesangbuch of 1677. An English translation of the German was first published by the American author of “It Came upon the Midnight Clear,” Richard Storrs Willis in his 1850 collection Church Chorals and Choir Studies. He printed a footnote “sung by the German knights on the way to Jerusalem” which helped to perpetuate the Crusader story.
