Monday’s Lonesome Pine District tour-nament semifinal match proved to be no dif-ferent.

The Warriors outlasted the Raiders 5-4 atthe Jim Humphreys Complex on the campusof UVA-Wise to advance to the LPD finals.

In the girls semifinals on Monday,Central blanked Union 6-0 to advance to thetitle match.

Reminiscent of earlier matches, Burtonused strong service games from their top-seeded Tanner Crowder, who was able to getpast Corey Scott in a three-set thriller 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

WISE — The Union boys and the J.I.Burton girls were winners in Tuesday’s semi-final rounds of the Lonesome Pine Districttennis tournament at the Jim HumphreysComplex on the campus of UVA-Wise.

Union defeated the Clintwood Greenwave5-3 and the J I Burton Lady Raiders took a 5-0 win over the Clintwood Lady Greenwave.

With the wins, both teams advanced to theLPD championship matches. Union wasscheduled to take on Central and the Burtongirls were scheduled to face Central at UVa-Wise on Wednesday.

NORTON — The J.I. Burton Raidersswept a nondistrict doubleheader from RyeCove Eagles Monday at Lawson-FitchkoStadium. evening 11-7 and 4-1.

The Raiders scored 10 of their 11 runs inthird and fourth innings of game one to pullaway from the stubborn Eagles.

Burton’s J.W. Wharton had three RBI’sand Jessee Coffey and Will Cassell addedtwo RBIs each.

“J.W. Wharton had a good game with twohits. Our pitcher today, Ian Walker, strug-gled at times, primarily because he hasn’tseen a lot of work, but we played good behindhim to allow us to win,” said Burton coachJim Adams.

Malik Miles, Colby Robbins, and MorganStanley also had RBI’s in game one for theRaiders.

The Eagles spread their seven runs overfour innings, scoring three in the second, onein the third, two in the fourth and one in the

fifth inning. The Eagle attack was led by Sammy

Ervin with three hits and a RBI. Game two was more of a pitchers duel in

the Raiders 4-1 win.Adrian Mullins started for the Raiders

and scattered four hits, striking out sevenRye Cove batters and allowing only one runover five innings to pick up the win.

Aaron Price led the Raider offense in thesecond game with a double and a single anda RBI.

The Raiders scored one run in the secondand three in the third for their game total.

Will Cassell’s single in the third and RyeCove errors allowed three runs to score inthe inning.

The Eagles scored their lone run in thetop of the fourth inning on a walk, a fielderschoice, and an RBI single by Sammy Ervin.

“I am very pleased with the way AdrianMullins pitched today. We played gooddefense behind him and I believe this is thefirst game this year we did not make anerror,” Adams said. u
