The Blessing of Obedience

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, andsaying, Repent ye: for the kingdom ofheaven is at hand. For this is he that wasspoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying,The Voice of one crying in the wilderness,Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make hispaths straight.

And the same John had his raiment ofcamel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about hisloins; and his meat was locusts and wildh o n e y .

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and allJudaea, and all the region round aboutJordan, and were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Phariseesand Sadducees come to his baptism, he said

1

unto them, O generation of vipers, whohath warned you to flee from the wrath tocome? Bring forth therefore fruits meet forr e p e n t a n c e .

Matthew 3:1-8When was the last time you won a soul?

When was the last time you gave somethingto a needy person? When was the last timeyou took God’s healing power to the sick?

Pause for a moment and ask yourselfthese questions. When was the last timey o u — not somebody else, but y o u— b r o u g h tforth fruit to the Lord? If you’re trying to livea Christian life without bringing fruit toJesus, you are a rebellious child of God. Youare cutting yourself off from the manyblessings God has for you.

God likes busy men and busy women. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Ifyou’ll worship God, read the Bible, pray intongues, win souls, pray for the sick, and castout devils, you’ll never go crazy.

If you’ll be willing to obey God, He willkeep you so busy that demons can’t catchy o u .

2

They won’t have a chance to get intoyour mind. devils can’t get in your mindanyway unless you think about them. Youhave to first think about the temptations theyoffer you, and then begin to yield to them.

The Bible says that in order to work forGod and not be rebellious, you have to keepyour flesh under subjection. It is the nature ofthe flesh to rebel against the things of God.

Confusion Causes Rebellion

Until I was baptized in the Holy Ghost, Ididn’t fully understand some things.

I was raised in the Baptist Church, andwe didn’t believe in healing, casting outdevils, speaking in tongues, or operating inthe gifts of the Spirit. A person could getsaved or born again there; but it was foolishto take a cancer patient to our church to geth e a l e d .

You may ask, “Why don t churches likethat get people healed?” Because they haven’treceived the truth of Mark 11:24 and James5:14; they are still doubting and wondering.

3

As long as you are a rebel against a particularportion of the Bible, God won’t work for youin that area.

My Baptist mother died of cancer at 37years of age. My brother, a football player inhigh school, died at 19 of Bright’s disease.Nobody ever told them that Jesus was ah e a l e r .

Most of the people we knew wereashamed of it. All of us boys in the FirstBaptist church were ashamed. We wouldn’thave been caught dead in a tent meeting thatsaid, “Healing Crusade.” We didn’t knowthat the preacher under the tent was perhapsthe only one in town to have the truth.

There we were making five thousanddollars a week, wearing our tailor-madesuits, riding in Cadillacs, and going to theFirst church, saying, “We’ve got it. Thoseother people are just wild. We ought to feelsorry for them.”

To be truthful, we were more confusedthan the devil because even the devil knowsJesus will heal people. (It’s awful to be morestupid than the devil!)

4

We were in rebellion against God andthe Bible. If you want to know what God islike, read the Bible. Jesus said, Lay hands on thesick, and they shall recover ( M a r k 1 6 : 1 8 ) .

God sent me to a Full Gospel churchthere in Cleveland, Tennessee, to train me;but I was so rebellious that I was ashamed togo inside. I would look both ways to see ifany of the First Baptist boys were watching. Iknew — God wanted me there, but I didn’twant any of my relatives and friends to seeme going in.

Bring Fruits to God

We have to learn not to be rebelliousagainst God. People could prevent much ofthis rebellion if they would learn to bringfruit to God.

Don’t be concerned about what the otherfellow is doing; be concerned first about whatyou are doing for God. You must reach thepoint that you are willing to put your owndesires aside and do what God wants you todo. When you cross that line, God will bless

5

you. You will be in the place for God to giveyou His peace 24 hours a day, 365 days a y e a r .

I am never confused about anything. Ihaven’t had a confused day in years. I havethe peace of God in me all the time — 24hours a day, 365 days a year. I don’t believe insad days.

Now I didn’t say that the devil doesn’ttry to visit me; but when he does, I just say,“In Jesus’ name, go from me!” Then I begin toworship the Lord. I say, “Oh Jesus, I worshipYou and praise You.” Every morning when Iopen my eyes, I say several times, “I loveYou, Jesus.” Then I try to spend some timejust worshiping Him. When I do, His warmand tender presence just comes on me.

Next, I begin to confess who I am inChrist Jesus. I confess that I am not a rebelagainst God. I say, “The Bible says in 1Samuel 15:23 that rebellion is the same aswitchcraft. I am not a rebel against God.”Then I confess that I will do what God wantsme to do.

6

Some people say, “It’s so hard to live theChristian life.” But if you present yourself toGod like this, you will find that it’s the easiestthing you ever tried. Don’t be a rebel againstthe Bible, God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost. When the Holy Ghost tells you to dosomething, do it!

One time the Holy Ghost told me to parkmy car in front of a parsonage and startpraying in tongues. I lay down in the frontseat and began to cry and make intercessionfor the pastor’s daughter, who wasconsidering marrying the wrong person.

The Holy Ghost knows exactly what Heis doing. After I had been there about anhour, praying in tongues, the Spirit of Godsuddenly came upon the daughter in thehouse and she began to scream. She ranoutside and jumped in my car, shouting, “Idon’t want to give him up! I don’t want togive him up! Do I have to give him up?”

I said, “Yes, you have to give him up.”She replied, “But it’s not easy to give up

somebody like that.”

7

Obedience Produces Fruit

Obeying the Holy Ghost, then, involvesbringing forth fruits. John the Baptist said,Bring forth therefore fruits meet forrepentance: and think not to say withinyourselves, We have Abraham to our father:for I say unto you, that God is able of thesestones to raise up children unto Abraham(Matt. 3:8,9).

The average person will say, “I’m okay; Ibelong to such-and-such church.” A nationalsurvey says that over 95 percent of theChristians in America have never won a souland that over 60 percent of the born-againChristians in our country learned thefoundation of the new birth through a bookor a tract.

No wonder God told me several yearsago to sow seeds on college campuses bygiving out books and tracts. I have given outbooks and tracts by the hundreds ofthousands from the University of Maine tothe University of California. At first I couldhardly believe that God wanted me to do it; Iwas already so busy. But I didn’t question it.

8

God spoke to me as I was sitting in asorority house at the University of Florida.About 85 girls in the dining room began tosing a dirty song. (I was the only man in thehouse.) I dropped my head and began topray. I said, “Help these girls, Jesus. Get tothese students.”

I had been praying for about five minuteswhen the Spirit of God came on me and said,“I will if y o u will; but I c a n ’ t if you d o n ’ t !”Jesus wanted to walk into that sorority houseand save every girl, but He couldn’t. TheGospel is spread through men. The Gospel isspread through y o u, and it won’t get spread ifyou are a rebellious child.

Beware of rebellion against God!Not too long after that, I told God I would

begin a campus ministry. I continued to tellHim that for about three months, but I neverdid anything about it. Then I was in Memphisholding a meeting for several hundred youngpeople. Someone walked up to me and said,“God told me to give you a motor home.”Another person put a $100 bill in my pocket. Then three fraternity boys from Memphis

9

State walked up and said, “While you werespeaking, Jesus told us to start working foryou, handing out tracts and books.”

I thought, “Dear Lord! A man has givenme a motor home; another fellow hands me a$100 bill to buy some tracts; and three boyscome up and say, ‘Here we are.’”

Then the Lord said to me, “Get it?”For the next three years I had four or five

witnessing teams covering college campusesacross the country. Finally, I said, “Well, I’vecovered the country four or five times now.I guess I can let this ministry drop off tot h e s i d e . ”

At this time I was in Nashville withReverend Kenneth Hagin and his wife,Oretha. As I was getting ready to go backhome, they said, “Norvel, the Lord wants usto pray before you leave.” The moment webegan to pray, the Spirit of God hit BrotherHagin. He started to cry and say, “Precious, precious, precious is the ministry to theyoung people. Precious is the ministry to thecollege kids.”

10

Needless to say, God got through to me;and I repented. G o d had never told me tostop; I had said I was going to stop. But Godnever wants you to stop until H e says so.

Don’t rebel against God. If He tells youto do something, go ahead, even if it looks sobig you think you can’t do it. You’ll be able toif you start out slow and start out small. TheHoly Ghost will help you.

Can God Trust You?

God only helps and promotes those Hecan trust. The Spirit of God will help you ifHe can trust you. If He has never helped youdo anything, then He can’t trust you.

The same is true with the gifts of theSpirit. The Holy Ghost will give you the giftsas you minister. They will flow through youas the Spirit wills if He can trust you witht h e m .

Ask yourself right now, “Can Jesus trustme to worship Him and to bring forth fruitunto Him?”

11

It isn’t enough to say, “I belong to theMethodist church or the Pentecostal church.”You can’t just say, “I’ve been a churchmember for twenty-five years.” It isn’tenough to join a nice church in yourcommunity, go there every Sunday, and getmad if you don t have a good, spirituals e r v i c e .

When are you going to sow seedyourself? Have you ever brought a sinner tochurch? God wants you to win souls yourself.Sure, you need a spiritual church where youcan learn to worship God and work; but Godwants you to bring forth fruit unto Him, andyou will never bring it forth as long as youare a rebel against God and His Word.

Be Delivered From Yourself

If you’re not bringing forth good fruit toJesus, you need to be delivered from yourself.

One time when I was asked to ministerGod’s Word at a large university, I was givena meeting room for a week. In one of themeetings an alcoholic was delivered and later

12

brought the university psychiatrist. Thepsychiatrist sat and listened; then after theservice he said to me, “I want to make anappointment to talk with you when you area v a i l a b l e . ”

I said, “Okay. We’ll talk this afternoon.”As we talked together, he said, “I’ve

never before heard anybody like you, andI’ve never sat for three hours withoutsmoking a cigarette. I guess you know thatmy mind is telling me what you’re sayingisn’t true.”

I said, “I know your mind is telling youthat; but, Doctor, I can help you if you’ll letme. Just pull that intellectual mind out ofyour head, lay it aside, and come to God as alittle child. Say, ‘God, I’m dumb; but I’mwilling for You to teach me. Teach me Yourways, Lord. Show me Your reality.’”

Then the Holy Ghost began to show mesomething about him. I said, “All day you tellpeople how to live. Then you go to thecountry club every afternoon and sit withyour friends, drinking and telling dirty jokes. How many times have you sat there after

13

telling people how to live all day long andnot even known how to live yourself? Howoften have you said, ‘Is this all life has too f f e r ? ’ ”

“Oh, I’ve said that a lot of times. Howdid you know?”

“Doctor, God will give you a brand newlife. You don’t know anything about God –you’re a rebel against Him — but if you’ll letme, I’ll teach you enough to find Him. Cometo class tonight.”

That night I spoke on “God’s DoubleDose.” I talked about being baptized in theHoly Ghost, speaking in other tongues, andbeing healed. When I got through, I gave aninvitation for healing. The moment I gave it,the psychiatrist jumped out of his seat, camedown in front of the whole class, and stoodthere. He was ready to receive from God!

The first thing you must do in order toreceive from God is to get delivered fromyourself. Like the psychiatrist, you have toforget about the people around you and putyour pride aside. You have to be deliveredfrom yourself — not somebody else, y o u r s e l f.

14

Use What God Gives You

Suppose a radio pastor suddenly said,“Well, God, I think I’m going to cancel about450 radio stations and speak once every threemonths. I’ve got enough money to get a placein Florida, so I’m just going to take it easy fora while. But I love You, Lord!”

After about three months, the things Godhad blessed him with would begin to dropoff. Why? Because he wasn’t using them. Youhave to use what God gives you. If you don’t,it will get stale.

Jesus gave us the Great Commission, and He expects us to use it. He said:

Go ye into all the world, and preach thegospel to every creature . . .

And these signs shall follow them thatbelieve; In my name shall they cast outdevils; they shall speak with new tongues;

They shall take up serpents; and if theydrink any deadly thing, it shall not hurtthem; they shall lay hands on the sick, andthey shall recover.

Mark 16:15,17,18

15

Don’t be rebellious against God. Dowhat He has told you to do. Cast out devilswhen you come upon them. (But don’t lookfor a devil behind every tree; devils aren’t ineverybody.) When you come upon a sickperson, lay your hands on him.

Recently while speaking in Atlanta,Georgia, I gave an invitation, and a manstumbled to the front. You could tell he was awino; he was filthy and the smell was almostu n b e a r a b l e .

He looked up at me and said, “Thechurch I went to threw me out three times;but something told me that if I came heretonight, you wouldn’t throw me out.”

I replied, “That’s right. You won’t getthrown out of here. Come here.”

I put my arms around him, and the Spiritof the Lord began to come upon him.

You might ask, “How could you putyour arms around someone so filthy andd i r t y ? ”

God has delivered me from tailor-madesuits and Cadillacs. I still have some of thesethings, but I have been delivered from them.

16

(It’s all right to have things as long as you’redelivered from them –- as long as they don’thave you!)

It was nothing for me to put my armsaround that man and say, “We love you. Geton your knees right now, and we’ll pray foryou. It doesn’t make any difference howmany bottles of whiskey you’ve drunk, we’llget hold of God for you and you won’t bedrinking anymore. When God comes, thewhiskey goes.”

Today, that person doesn’t even look thesame. He goes to that church and wears cleanclothes now.

Jesus has never turned against lonely, hopeless drunks, and He never will. But Hehas to work through you. God wants goodf r u i t .

Ministering In The City Dump

Years ago, I got delivered from myself atthe city dump. I had seen that God was goingto use me and thought He had made amistake. For three or four years, I tried to talk

17

Him out of it. Every night He would comeinto my room. I would get out of bed and cry,“God, You don’t want me; I’m no good. I’venever done anything for You. I’m not apreacher. You don’t want me, Lord.”

But He acted like He had no ears. Hewould say to me, “Come, follow Me, andbelieve the Bible.”

When I saw that He wasn’t going to giveup, and that He loved me enough to comeinto my room every night, I made up mymind to follow Him and do what He wantedme to do.

I said, “God, I don’t have any sense, soYou’ll have to train me.” I thought He wouldsend me to a church or to a big auditorium;instead He sent me to the city dump! Thehouses there were pitiful; the people wholived there were in bad shape. They smelledso bad that I had to hold my nose to pray fort h e m .

I never will forget the time I prayed for awoman while bugs were crawling on the bedwith her. It isn’t nice to stand beside some-

18

body’s bed and try to pray while the bugs arecrawling out!

After I finished praying for her, I walkedacross the street to a house that must havehad 40,000 flies inside! A woman lived therewith her three children.

A little girl walked over to me and said,“Mister, this is all the milk the baby has, andwe don’t have any food. We don’t havea n y t h i n g . ”

I walked outside and said, “God, is thiswhat I get for leaving my church?” It was aBible course straight from heaven! When Isaid that, God overshadowed me and I brokedown. I will never forget it as long as I live.

He said, “Son, be faithful to Me here andI’ll promote you.”

“Yes, Lord.”“They need some milk in the house.

What are you going to do about it?”“Well, Lord, I’m going to the store and

buy some milk and food.”“Show Me. Talk is cheap.”God is always wanting you to show Him

19

something. Until you start doing something, you are a rebel against God.

Again, I quote John the Baptist: And nowalso the axe is laid unto the root of the trees:therefore every tree which bringeth notforth good fruit is hewn down, and cast intothe fire (Matt. 3:10). By showing Godsomething, you are bringing forth good fruit.

My Will Vs. God’s Will

Several years ago God taught me alesson. I thought that when I became born-again and Spirit-filled, I could do whatever Iwanted to do. I wasn’t interested in bringingforth good fruit to God the way I should haveb e e n .

One weekend I made up my mind todrive from Cleveland, Tennessee, to Augusta,Georgia; stay there for two days visiting;leave Augusta Saturday morning; go to theUniversity of Georgia campus; watchTennessee beat Georgia; then drive homeafter the ball game.

20

That was how I planned to spend myweekend, and nothing was going to interferewith it.

While in Augusta, a Full Gospel pastorsaid to me, “Brother Norvel, the Lord told meHe wants you to speak at my church Sundaymorning.” I didn’t know what the Lord hadtold him because I hadn’t listened to the Lordm y s e l f .

If you make plans without praying, you’ll miss God every time. Don’t do it.You’ll be in rebellion against God. Once youmake up your mind, God can’t reach you.

God will let you do all kinds of thingsthat you shouldn’t do. If you don’t go to himin prayer and learn to be led by the inwardwitness, you will end up making a lot ofm i s t a k e s .

If you feel in your spirit that youshouldn’t do something, then don’t do it. Ifyou feel good about it — like velvet on theinside — that’s the signal from the HolyGhost to go ahead. The Spirit of God is hereto help you and He will — if you pray and letHim lead you.

21

I hadn’t prayed about my plans for theweekend. I just said, “I’m going to the ballgame Saturday. I’ve already made up mym i n d . ”

When the pastor invited me to speak, Imade up an excuse and said, “I’ll come backand speak for you some other time.”

The pastor had said he wanted to see me;so Saturday morning on my way out of townI stopped by his house. He had gone to thechurch, and I was sitting in his living roomwith some other people. Suddenly I began tofeel pain around my heart. Then the pastortelephoned to say that the church janitor hadjust had a heart attack. Immediately we wentinto prayer.

In a few minutes he called back to reportthat the janitor had died. He asked, “Wouldyou go with me to tell his wife? They own astore in town.”

“Yes, I’ll go.”So we went to the store and talked with

his wife. All this time I was still planning togo to the Tennessee/Georgia game.

22

While I was standing there in that store, the Spirit of God hit me like a bolt of lightning. The Lord said, “Go to the church and pray.”The assistant pastor was standing there, so Itold him what the Lord had said.

As I entered the church and was walkingtoward the pulpit, the Holy Spirit moved onme and I fell to my knees in prayer. I didn’tknow it, but the Spirit of God was makingintercession for me. For me!

After I had prayed for about twentyminutes in the Spirit (in tongues), the HolyGhost began to groan through me. I waslying flat on the floor in front of the pulpit, groaning. The Spirit of God had taken me tothe point that all I could do was groan. Fornearly three hours I lay there groaning beforeGod. I couldn’t get up.

After that time (just when Tennessee wasbeating Georgia!), I pushed myself up to asitting position and said, ‘All right, Lord, I’llspeak at this church Sunday morning.”

23

The Baptism of Fire

John the Baptist said:I indeed baptize you with water unto

repentance; but he that cometh after me ismightier than I, whose shoes I am notworthy to bear; he shall baptize you withthe Holy Ghost, and with fire.

Matthew 3:11There are three baptisms: water, the

Holy Ghost, and fire. Nearly everyonebelieves in water baptism; many haveexperienced Holy Ghost baptism; but only asmall number have been baptized in the fireof God.

As long as you leave off the fire, you willstay in some degree of rebellion as a child ofGod. But if you will spend time praying inthe Spirit and yield yourself to Him — to theGreater One Who lives inside you — He willburn y o u out of you. (So many people want todo what t h e y want to do, the way t h e y want todo it.)

At that point in my life, I needed to bebaptized in fire. I stayed in Augusta and

24

spoke Sunday morning. The altar call lastedmore than an hour. Fifteen or twenty peoplewere baptized in the Holy Ghost, and manywere saved. They flooded the altar.

Finally, we went to lunch about twoo’clock. Again, I was planning to leave. Aswe were sitting there, I said, “As soon as wefinish eating, I’m going back to get my clothesbecause I’m going home this afternoon.”

But the pastor replied, “Oh, no, you’renot! I’m going to get a revival out of this.”

“A revival! No, pastor, be quiet!”He repeated, “I’m going to get a revival

out of this. You’re not going anywhere!”But I insisted, “I a m going home. I want

to go this afternoon.”After that, I seemed to get weaker with

every bit of food. I had to be helped into thecar and into the parsonage. I went to sleepand woke up at 5:30, feeling refreshed; in fact,I felt like a teenager! I was ready to go; but bythen it was too late to go home, so I decided,“I might as well stay and speak againt o n i g h t . ”

25

Burning Out the ChaffWhat happened to me that weekend? In

Matthew 3:12 John the Baptist is describingJesus, the coming Messiah. He says:

Whose fan is in his hand, and he willthoroughly purge his floor, and gather hiswheat into the garner; but he will burn upthe chaff with unquenchable fire.

God was burning the chaff out of me.The fire of God was burning Norvel Hayes o u tof Norvel Hayes. He was burning out thatoverwhelming desire for football games. (Istill like football, but I’m usually too busy togo to games.) There is nothing wrong withfootball as long as you don’t put it beforeGod. I’m warning you: unless you want towind up on the floor, groaning for threehours, don’t put football games before God!He is no respecter of persons, and I’ve alreadybeen there, so take my advice.

Prayer Is the KeyJesus was a Man of prayer. He would

spend hour after hour in prayer before theFather God.

26

One year when I was a speaker at theFull Gospel Business Men’s convention inJerusalem, I stood in the Garden ofGethsemane where Jesus prayed until Hissweat turned to blood. As I was standingthere, His presence came upon me; it was asweet experience!

Take my word for it, there is power inprayer. It makes you feel good to know that ifyou stay before God, you’ll get some answers.

You can’t defeat a person who prays. Thestorms may come, but he will just keep onpraying until he prays himself out of them.He says:

“In Jesus’ name, I will not take a stormfrom the devil. I belong to Jesus. I will not berebellious; I will pray myself out of thes t o r m . ”

Above all, you need to pray in tongues. To know the will of God, you need to pray inthe Spirit continually. As you do, you will bewalking in God’s power.

The Bible says God’s power is a way oflife. That doesn’t mean to worship God onSunday, then go your own way on Monday,

27

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday andS a t u r d a y .

If you are not spending time in prayerand worship before God, you need to bedelivered from yourself. Until you aredelivered from yourself, you won’t bringforth good fruit.

Ask God in prayer to deliver you fromyourself. As you begin to yield to thedirection of the Holy Ghost, that element ofrebellion will be removed from your life. TheLord Jesus Christ will be pleased with you,and God’s power will become a way of living.
