Bangkok is home to 10 million people, most of them with ready smiles that greet the visitor. But it is also

a place where the colourful life in the klongs (back alley canals) can be a daily struggle. It is these contrasts that make Bangkok unique and unforgettable. The size of the metropolis can be overwhelming for the first-time visitor, and even old Bangkok hands can be torn by the sheer number of attractions. Where to begin? No need to hesitate. Just hop on a Skytrain, tuk-tuk or motorcycle taxi and plunge into the busy thoroughfares of Silom and Sukhumvit in the modern city centre, whose shopping malls, arcades and irresistible window displays can make your credit card work overtime. It is all there, within reach and surprisingly affordable: silks, ceramics, enamel, lacquerware and pottery, precious and semi-precious stones, jade, pearls, orchids, tailor-made suits and dresses – you name it. At night the visitor’s choices become no less difficult. If Patpong’s fascinating mix of transvestite stage shows and in-your-face sex clubs are not your scene, or the music emerging from Khao San’s backpacker hangouts seems on the noisy side, Bangkok is also a gourmet paradise, offering exquisite Asian as well as Western cuisine. Unless, that is, you are happy to settle for a cold beer and some spicy barbecue skewers from one of the thousands of street stalls, as you watch the world pass by your table.

All over this fascinating metropolis, visitors will find symbols, statues and homages to Buddhism.

A plunge into the pastMake sure to make time for another plunge – into the past. Take a historic walk backwards in time: start at the River City shopping centre, then fol-low the signposts towards Chinatown, which takes you past colonial-era archi-tecture and shophouses into bustling backstreets and alleyways. Alternatively, let the temples be your guide. Travel by river is not only the most comfortable and the most refreshing way to explore Bangkok, but it can also be the quickest. Chao Phraya used to be a minor canal, but now it’s like a wide racecourse at rush hour. One of the express boats’ most popular stops is the Grand Palace, conveniently located nearby Bangkok’s most specta-cular temples, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Keaw), the Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun), and Wat Pho, which features an enormous reclining Buddha and was home to the

The Oriental is also one of Bangkok’s oases of peace: well-tended gardens and palm trees surrounding a swim-ming pool, the quiet hum of waiters and piccolos, a bartender who can mix a hundred exotic drinks and tell a thousand anecdotes. Another refuge from the city’s non-stop go-go speed is Lumpini Park, particularly at the soft glow of dawn, as people crowd lawns and paths to practice t’ai chi, take their daily jog or sail their kites in the fresh morning air. In a narrow side street, you may spot a small parade of saffron-robed monks emerge through the half-light of a temple portal, collecting their morning alms. Across town, on weekends, the action picks up at the enormous, bust-ling Chatuchak Market, mere walking distance from the Mo Chit station served by the efficient Skytrain. Here fruits, vegetables, exotic herbs, spices,

live animals, authentic and antique (and fake) watches change hands. As the day breaks, the unmistakable oriental perfumed blend of fried spring rolls and smoke from joss sticks battles the acrid fumes from tuk-tuks and fish drying beside the road.

When in Bangkok, you learn to savour this time of day, before the city’s glorious palette of pastel and golden colours lose their freshness as exhaust fumes pull a blanket of haze over the cityscape. As it grew into one of the world’s leading metropolises, the city never lost its power to fascinate, to invite visitors to indulge in its excesses and stark beauty, to excite the senses as well as the mind. If you come with patience, time and tolerance, Bangkok will amply reward you.

The Grand Palace, situated in the heart of the Rattakosin district, is almost a city within the city, its golden arches, decorated walls and magnificent sculptures inhabiting palaces dedicated to Buddhism, the national religion.

Serene sanctuariesBut in Bangkok you can also find havens of serenity. In the smaller klongs picturesque scenes suddenly appear: the old, silk-bearded barber shaving his customers on the porch outside his wooden house; the mandarin lady plying her delicacies on a fragile bamboo table at the entrance to a narrow bridge; the kid helping his blind grandma sell songbirds to passing pedestrians near the discreet entrance to the Oriental Hotel. They may be poor, but the irrepressible optimism that is Bangkok’s trademark comes through even when times are hard.

While the Grand Palace’s stunning golden towers, statues and sculptures are a deliberately extravagant celebration of Buddhism, don’t miss all the small temples that also can surprise the visitor with memorable examples of religious art.

Driven by fearless drivers who know every nook and cranny of Bangkok, the tuk-tuks are sometimes the only way to get where you want to go. While they can be a noisy, smelly and hot way to travel, they are also fun!

Film festival in Tromsø 14–20 January, Tromsø

The Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of Norway’s biggest film festivals and cause for an annual mass celebration in Tromsø. In 2012 the festival sold over 53,000 tickets in just one week. TIFF screens the best quality films from around the world for a local, national and international audience. The festival also has its own programme, “Film fra Nord”, for short films and documentaries from the Barents region. The festival is held towards the end of Tromsø’s dark polar night, and the organisers use this opportunity to show films outdoors on a massive snow screen, built specially every year on Tromsø’s main harbour-front square, Stortorget. In the mornings, children from the local kindergartens come to watch, and later in the day short films are shown for a slightly older audience. The whole city enjoys TIFF!

“At Christmas, I think it is important for us to give each other presents that delight

and make life that bit more enjoyable,” advises Jemtegård, who provides fashion advice on Norwegian TV. “Forget the socks, and the under-wear (unless they are lacy and very special!), and the practical tools. Give gifts that show how special that person is to you, and that your best friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, partner, mother or father deserves that little bit of luxury in their everyday life that they would not normally allow themselves,” she suggests. In recent years gifts have become more and more personal. Kiss me, it’s New year’s eve By Ian Wright

yippee! Come on, everyone, it’s New Year’s Eve ... Let’s PARTY! But now comes the

real dilemma, as nothing is ever simple on this festive night: Where to go? What to wear? Where to collapse? The only guarantee on New Year’s Eve is that you know that the evening is either going to be absolutely brilliant or absolutely dire – there’s no in-between, so the pressure to have a great time can be immense. It’s also such a special day globally, which makes it unique – there’s just no other night like it on earth. From the Chinese celebrations in Beijing and hippy Full Moon parties in Goa and Thailand, to a good old traditional knees-up in Scotland, the whole planet gets to go mad. My first full-on New Year’s was great. When I was young, the only place to be on 31 December had to be right in the middle of Trafalgar Square in London, so me and a few friends decided to join the masses, all heading to the big party in the centre of the capital. Even while downing a tasty warm can of cheap supermarket cider and surrounded by thousands of wild party-goers, I was still able to soak in the iconic scene: right in front of me, in all its grandness, the National Gallery. Then, to the right, the huge St Martin-in-the-Fields church, Charing Cross station and Nelson’s Column. Behind me, Pall Mall, leading to

Buckingham Palace; next to that, Whitehall, where you can look right down the street to see the Houses of Parliament. All this splendour just adds to an electric atmosphere. Some people would claim that it’s only a good night if you can’t remember a thing about it, but I think that that is just what alcoholics say. I hardly remember a thing about that night. I do recall the area being completely packed with a swaying sea of drunken, good-humoured revellers, and the night turning into one massive 80s disco, dancing and singing to bad music. Perfect! Those were the days of jumping in the fountains, climbing all over the lion statues, wearing the policeman’s helmet, and the customary crazy kissing frenzy at 12 o’clock. This starts as soon as people hear that famous chiming of Big Ben, booming down from Westminster and signifying the stroke of midnight. Like a horde of flesh-eating zombies smelling human blood for the first time, all hell breaks loose. The next year my big New Year’s revelling turned out to be a total failure. The evening was spent driving around the Kent country-side in circles looking for a party, and for the 12 o’clock countdown I was in a lay-by at the side of the M2 motorway. Yippee!

So, while I was “celebrating” on a cold, deserted road in England, my friends had hitchhiked to Amsterdam to check out the

festivities abroad. I didn’t go because “I couldn’t be bothered”. I think I can honestly say that their Dutch New Year’s was a lot better than mine, and to this day it still makes me really jealous every time they mention it. Sadly, I cannot recount here their tales of fun and frolics, because those kinds of stories are for another type of magazine altogether. All I’m going to say on the matter is that Amsterdam is on my New Year “must do” list, and Kent doesn’t even make my Christmas Card list. On a very strange and final note, can I just say that I find it somewhat bizarre that an old English, 1920s silly comedy sketch called Dinner for One, filmed in 1963 by a German filmmaker using English actors speaking English, has become one of the most iconic symbols of the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Germany and all over Scandinavia. How did that happen? It’s brilliant! That’s just how some of these weird and wonderful traditions start. It might have begun as a small thing and somehow become a cult hit, which then spread like wildfire and now New Year and Christmas are not complete without it. You have Dinner for One, and we have The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz and of course The Great Escape. Oh, I’m looking forward to New Year’s Eve already. But what am I going to wear?

FROM BOY WONDER

TO FAMILY MAN Leif Ove Andsnes (42) has been called ‘one of the most

gifted musicians of his generation’ and is hailed by critics

all over the world. This year he is celebrating his 25th

anniversary as a concert pianist, but he is far from content

to rest on his laurels. This autumn he embarked

on his most ambitious project to date.

The Norwegian pianist is famous through-out the world for his virtuoso perform-ances. He travels the globe, playing to

packed houses at the most celebrated concert venues. Orchestras fight to have him play with them. After 25 years of spending 250 days on the road, Andsnes now has a reason to hurry away from a life on tour to his own home in Bergen. The arrival of his daughter Sigrid two years ago brought an end to the musician’s existence as he knew it. “I used to think that life at home was difficult to deal with, but now I have put down some roots that make me want to come home. That’s why the tours are much more intense and compact than before. A life on the road is probably not something I would recommend to anyone with small children,” he says laughing.

A constant travellerWe meet up with the down-to-earth musician in London, a city he has played in countless times. He is rehearsing ahead of a Beethoven concert that he is performing with the Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. The day’s first practice session is over. In a few hours he is due to rehearse with the other musicians. Andsnes flew in from New York yesterday, will spend a few days in London in connection with the concert, then after a long weekend at home with his family in Norway he will fly back to the USA for a series of concerts in Los Angeles. He performs around 80 concerts a year these days, spending six months on the road. “I was nervous about what it would be like to have a child. I wondered how on earth I was going to do both things well enough. But I’ve discovered it’s a matter of learning by doing, so when I’m at home I am very focused on that. It’s good to have someone there who lives only in the moment and doesn’t give a fig about me going to Los Angeles the next day when she wants to play. And I do find a good balance between being mentally present when I’m at home and being focused on the job when I’m travelling. For me the music I play and the records I make are in a way my own flesh and blood, children that I must also take care of,” he says.

Four years with Beethoven The firstborn child of Andsnes’s new project came into the world this autumn. He has decided to record all of Beethoven’s five piano

teachers, giving piano lessons to children at their home. It was not long before the young Leif Ove wanted to have a go himself. “I started practicing one hand at a time when I was five years old, and remember having a really hard time putting them both together. But after a while it just clicked into place. From then on I progressed rapidly. By the time I was six or seven, I had started playing proper pieces,” he explains. But being the only child in his group of friends playing the piano was not always an unalloyed joy. “It was a solitary pursuit, and at times difficult. I felt very much on my own with it, but I’d developed my playing so far that stopping was not an option.” When he was nine he began to take part in youth competitions, and he won prizes every time he participated. It was only then that he realised he was really good.

Left home aged 16 However, to advance further he would have to move to a bigger place than Karmøy. When he had com-pleted his compulsory schooling at the age of 16 he therefore left home and went to live in Bergen. He had been accepted at the Bergen Music Conservatory. “It was about then that I started thinking of myself as a pianist, that this was something I could do professionally. I never had a Plan B if it hadn’t worked out.” For Andsnes things really began to accelerate. There was no one else of his own age at school. The others were 19–20 years old. He was living away from home and practising six or seven hours a day in addition to his normal classes. When he made his debut at the age of 17 orchestras started asking him to do concerts. At 19 he was discovered in the USA and went over there. His parents were still working in Karmøy, looking after Andsnes’s younger siblings. He was alone and felt out of his depth. “From 15 to 25 was a pretty difficult time for me. Not only because being a teenager is crappy, but I was thrown into a completely new life, and had to grow up very fast. It wasn’t always a great success. My personality wasn’t up to the role I was supposed to play. I just wasn’t ready for it. I felt forced into a role I wasn’t comfortable with.” Andsnes’s response was not to act out. “Instead I closed off a part of my personality, but at the same time I realise that those years were crucial for getting where I am today,” he remembers.


concertos – live in concert. This will be the first time he has recorded any of the giant’s compositions, and he will be accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. It will take him four years to complete the whole Beethoven cycle. “This is probably the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken,” he says. “I haven’t felt ready to do it until now.” The idea came to him in the lift of a hotel he was staying at in São Paulo, Brazil, a few years ago. Piano concertos no. 1 and 2 were played over and over again. At first the repetition irritated the pianist, but after a while he found it fascinating hearing shorter fragments of these pieces every time he walked into the lift. He found the music highly original, full of surprises and beauty, and he decided to tackle them himself. “I realised that it was time for me to join the grown-ups, and Beethoven is the quintessential

classical composer. This is a milestone for me,” he says. Andsnes believes that one thing that makes Beethoven so special is the music’s enormous energy and powerful contrasts. “He is very relevant today,” he goes on. “He lived at a time of revolution and pan-European Napoleonic war, which gave his music a revolutionary character, and also the feeling that we go through great human struggle on our way to victory or at least to some kind of answer or conclusion. Even in today’s noisy world, this music still shakes us up.”

Precocious talent Leif Ove Andsnes was born on Karmøy, an island community off the west coast of Norway, in 1970. Together with three younger sisters, he grew up on the windswept shores of the North Sea, surrounded by beautiful scenery. His parents were both music

He gritted his teeth, worked extremely hard and climbed ever onward towards the top. His network grew. He began to feel at home in cities such as New York, London and Berlin. He can now look back on a career that has produced eight Grammy nominations and nine Norwegian music industry awards (Spellemannprisen). He has been awarded the Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav and countless other prizes and distinctions both at home and abroad.

Family lifeSome 10 years ago he met Ragnhild Lothe, a horn player with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. “It took a while before we got together. It was a long process for me to realise that I could be happy in a relationship. I was so completely acclimatised to a life on tour, a life where you only think about yourself, that it took time,” he recalls. Today he is glad that he waited as long as he did before settling down and having children. “If I had had kids when I was 25, the relationship would probably have gone under,” he says candidly. “I wouldn’t have been ready to combine parent-hood and music. I wouldn’t have had the self-confidence. Now I feel that I had my wild times and was obsessively single-minded until I turned 40. It is a healthy sign that I now wake up and think about how my partner and daughter are doing – not just about how I’m doing.” When he is not on tour he enjoys pottering about his house in Kalfaret, a picturesque part of Bergen that offers fabulous views over the entire city centre. He also has an apartment in

Copenhagen, a holiday house in the southernmost part of Hardanger, and his partner’s family have a summer house in Kjerringøy, in Northern Norway. “We prefer being in the north, and have several places we can stay in Norway and Denmark. I am dependent on the changing seasons we have, and love being outdoors and close to nature. When I’m at home I also like to spend time in the kitchen. Good food and drink are a passion I devote time to when I want to relax. I also do some Pilates and running, to try to keep my body in shape,” he reveals.

Never been more motivated Leif Ove Andsnes has achieved all the recognition it is possible to receive, and he has played at concert halls worldwide. What is it that motivates him today, I ask. “The music,” he replies without hesitation. “Playing new pieces and launching into new projects. It’s tremendous fun to be on stage at venues around the world, playing with great musicians, but it’s something I’ve been doing for 25 years. So if it hadn’t been for the fact that I am passionate about music, I could easily have become blasé.” Asked whether he could imagine becoming fed up with Beethoven by the end of his current four-year project, Andsnes smiles and says: “I’m sure there will be times when I chuck the score at the wall and make a run for it. But he has so much to offer, and is so varied that I think I’ll be able to stick it out.”

Once the sun has set on the golden sands, attention shifts to the promenade, where both locals and holidaymakers can be found jogging, taking a stroll, or sitting at one of the many attractive cafés and bars that look out over the Atlantic. Excellent shopping is only a short walk from the beach at shopping centres such as El Corte Inglés, El Muelle and Las Arenas. A visit to the old town, Vegueta, is also a must.

LanzaroTeAn epicentre for windsportsWith its beautiful beaches and varied scenery, Lanzarote attracts both sunbathers and sports enthusiasts. The constant and reliable wind makes this small island, and particularly the beach of Famara, one of the best places to surf in the world. Cycling and hiking are great ways to experience this little island and its unique volcanic landscape. harsTaD/narvik Part mountain, part deep-blue sea, skiing in Narvikfjellet is a trip into the best of both worlds. This dramatic Arctic landscape perches on a glittering Norwegian fjord, providing seven groomed pistes (some floodlit after dark) and, for the more adventurous, off-piste that descends to the water’s edge. Beginners head for the two nursery slopes (children up to seven with a helmet ski free), and teens love the terrain park. Just across the border, wild and wonderful Riksgränsen sits 200 km above the Arctic Circle where the mountains of Sweden, Norway and Finland meet. Famous for its skiing under the midnight sun, all winter long you can enjoy groomed pistes, guided off-piste tours and heli-skiing, with hostels, apartments and hotels within walking distance of the slopes.

rovaniemi Ho, ho, ho, it’s forever Christmas in Rovaniemi, the hometown of Santa Claus in Finnish Lapland. GrenobLe Set in the spectacular Dauphiné region of the Southern Alps, the mountains surrounding the Olympic city of Grenoble are awash with forests and blessed with snowfall that moves in from both north and south. Like the song in The Sound of Music says, Austrian ski resorts are a few of our favourite things: wooden chalets, onion-domed churches, gentle rolling pastures covered in snow, and a lot of apple strudel and hot chocolate to keep the show on the road. You’ll need the energy in a country that lives and breathes for skiing – and they go out of their way to get everyone hooked on the habit. Most resorts have dedicated children’s areas and top ski kindergar-tens, including Saalbach-Hinterglemm, where beginners can progress out onto long intermediate circuits peppered with charming mountain huts. Just 30 km from Salzburg, Almenwelt Lofer claims to have the world’s first child-safe eight-passenger chairlift with heated seats and automatic bar. Many resorts, such as stylish Oberlech, also offer ski-from-the-door convenience. For those who like choice, SalzburgerLand is Austria’s biggest region, with more than 2,500 km of pistes across five areas: sample Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See-Kaprun, Gastein, Hochkönig and Salzburg Sportwelt/Pongau on one easy lift pass. Or head for Innsbruck for golden roofs and whipped-cream cakes, surrounded by dozens of ski areas within a one-hour radius, making it an ideal base.

1905: Two years after building the fi rst airplane in history, in 1903 the Wright brothers follow up with the fi rst practical airplane in the world. The 1905 Flyer lays the groundwork for three-axis control (in yaw, pitch and roll).

and shouting. Rosy cheeks and icy fingertips. Who could

forget the endless hours of fun and games in the snow on

mini skis?

The history of the Norwegian mini ski starts in the early 60s. A factory

called Plast & Form (“Plastic & Design”) – which 20 years later became Hamax – made simple sledges and mini skis, which quickly became very popular. These short plastic skis are still selling and still popular today. Since their introduction, Hamax has sold over 150,000 pairs of mini skis in Norway alone. Mini skis are also popular in Sweden. Manufacturers STIGA report that they have sold over 850,000 of their Micro Blades mini skis since they started making them over 30 years ago. Mini skis had their heyday from the late 70s to the early 90s, and their popularity is probably due to the fact that they are easy to use and require minimal equipment. Just strap them on, find some snow, and have a blast! They offer winter fun for young and old alike.

New designNow there is a new mini ski set to take Scandinavia by storm. Simen Fornes (35) and Mathias Hansson (35) from Oslo, the men behind the company OneFoot, spent several years modernising the original mini ski before they were satisfied and dared to order their first 5,000 skis for the product launch. “We melted, welded and soldered to improve our own mini skis, and when we started to feel satisfied we sat down and designed a completely new ski. That all started in 2008,” says Simen Fornes.

After arranging for the prototypes to be moulded in Taiwan, they tested and tweaked their new product, improving on some important details to make the ski even better. Fornes and Hansson made many changes to improve the original Hamax mini ski, and have patented their design.

Long process“We lived for our mini skis when we were younger,” says Fornes. He and his friends spent a lot of time on mini skis in those days, but he was never completely satisfied with the product – especially the straps that would get caked with snow and ice, making it impossible to strap them on tight enough. That gave him the idea to develop the product. “I got the idea for a new ski back in 1995, but it was only four years ago that I finally sat down with Mathias Hansson and we decided to go for it.”

entrepreneurial supportIn the summer of 2011, OneFoot received commercialisation support from Innovation Norway, and that’s when the ball really started rolling. In addition to their jobs as a furniture designer and product designer, Fornes and Hansson designed this new mini ski. It is now available in selected shops in Norway and through their online shop at onefoot.no. If this winter is a success for them, you will see their skis in more European cities in 2013.

“We are working with distributors in Sweden, Finland and several other European countries,” says Fornes. In addition, the duo dream of getting OneFoot skis into the North American market. And the name – well, there is a simple explanation. “Back when we used mini skis as kids, we only ever used one – never two – hence the name. The idea is to sell the skis individually to emphasise this concept, but there is certainly nothing wrong with using one on each foot,” explains Fornes.

inspiration Skiing and snowboarding have evolved a lot since Fornes and Hansson raced down ‘The Corkscrew’, a 2.5 km long toboggan run in Oslo. So, the design process has been governed by the way children and young people ski today. The sport has become more extreme, and skiers demand more of a product. The tricks they do, where and how they ski, and the use of elements such as rails and jumps, have led to a design that is wider, longer and has a much better grip on the snow. Fornes emphasises that the snowboard bindings are stable, durable and easy to use – and they don’t ice up. “We want to get people out in the fresh air by offering a toy with a low threshold to both buy and use. You don’t need any expensive equipment or fancy resorts. OneFoot aims to promote fun and encourage new winter sports skills, for everyone, everywhere. You can use the skis in the city, in your garden, in the mountains or at a ski resort.”

ChampionshipsThe new design and bindings mean that you can use the skis with virtually any shoe size or model. The main target group is six-to-19-year-olds, but don’t be surprised to see some adults reliving childhood memories, tricking their way through winter on a OneFoot. “We’ve also started the Mini Ski Association and dream of hosting both the Norwegian and World Mini Ski Championships, but it won’t be this winter,” says Fornes, adding that they have been in contact with the Norwegian Ski Federation with the aim of realising that dream. But first he needs to concentrate on getting people excited and giving them both the knowledge and inspiration to start using the new ski. He hopes families, schools, clubs and organisations will all benefit from their online instruction video.

– Er det et bygg dere er spesielt stolte av? – Operaen i Bjørvika var et gigantisk prosjekt som var svært vellykket og som har vært veldig positiv for vårt omdømme. Men det er like viktig for oss og vi er like stolte over, f. eks., å ferdigstille en barnevern-institusjon. Her bidrar vi med bygningsmessig infrastruktur til viktige samfunnsoppgaver, som å hjelpe barn i en vanskelig livssituasjon og i deres mest sårbare fase av livet, sier Christoffersen.

Statsbygg har til enhver tid omkring 160 prosjekter i arbeid, og 20-30 prosjekter blir ferdigstilt hvert år. Nå arbeider de blant annet med et nytt nasjonalmuseum på Vestbanen, samlokalisering av Høgskolen i Bergen, restaurering av Eidsvollsbygningen før 200 årsjubileet for grunnloven, og samlokalisering av Universitetet for miljø- og bio- vitenskap, Veterinærinstituttet og Norges Veterinærhøgskole – et viktig prosjekt som bringer tre relaterte miljøer sammen i Ås kommune.

6 Empire State Building When in New York you will walk around looking up much of the time. But make sure you also get high up in the air to get those iconic views of the city. 4 Rockefeller Center There is no reason not to visit both the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center’s Top of the Rock observation deck. Try one during the day, and one at night. 2 Fifth Avenue You might not buy much on this street, often ranked among the most expensive shopping streets in the world, but window-shopping on the section between 49th and 60th street can still be great fun. Here you will find the prestigious flagship stores of some of the globe’s leading brands. As you stroll along you will also find sights such as the Empire State Building, GE Building, St Patrick’s Cathedral, the Metropolitan Museum and the Guggenheim Museum.

3 Metropolitan Museum of Art Museums and New York go hand in hand. There are so many to visit, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art is definitely one of them. The Met is among the largest and most significant art museums in the world. Here you can see masterpieces by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh and Matisse. 10 Statue of Liberty National Monument This iconic national monument includes both the Statue of Liberty itself and Ellis Island. The Statue of Liberty is known worldwide and is situated on Liberty Island, just south-west of the tip of Manhattan. Ellis Island is situated north of Liberty Island, and was the gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States from 1892 until 1934. 1 Central Park The enormous public park stretches over more than 3.4 km2 from 59th to 110th. This is where the residents of Manhattan come for their morning jog, to escape the skyscrapers and the busy streets. 9 The High Line This is a disused elevated train track on the western side of Manhattan that has been converted into an innovative high-rise park, stretching right the way from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street. 8 Madison Square Garden This huge multi-use arena is often referred to simply as “The Garden”. It is the venue for concerts by the world’s greatest musical artists, it is the home of the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Rangers hockey stars. 5 Times Square Yes, you have seen it on TV, and yes it is crowded, but that is all part of the experience. 7 Macy’s Visit the world’s largest retail store! Macy’s in Herald Square covers an entire city block with ten and a half floors of the latest trends. Macy’s moved into Herald Square in 1902 and was the first building to have a modern-day escalator – the wooden escalators are still in use. When the skyscrapers provide little shade from the summer heat, reminding

European visitors that Manhattan is located on approximately the same latitude as Naples or Barcelona, Long Island becomes the place to escape. It delivers the goods: soft breezes, endless beaches, good surf, and a multitude of quaint, charming towns full of trendy eateries and laid-back bars. And it’s just a short drive from the Big Apple. Many New Yorkers would argue that Long Island is even better in spring and autumn, when you feel like you have it to yourself and can observe the waves crashing in from the Atlantic on the golden shores of Fire Island and Shelter Island, deserted by the summer crowds. Sightseeing along the roads is good all year round, with 25 lighthouses, and 60 vineyards along the ‘Wine Trails’. Follow road signs for places that offer horse riding, canoeing, bicycle rentals and golf.

Long Island’s North Shore was once known as the Gold Coast, whose opulent estates and lifestyle were immortalised by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby. Today’s ultra-chic scene can be found in The Hamptons, seaside communities where you may well brush shoulders with showbiz stars along the South Fork. Montauk, at the eastern end, offers pristine beaches and marinas where charter boats can take you ocean fishing to catch tuna and shark. Rent a car in Manhattan, or at one of New York’s airports. Or take the Long Island trains that leave from Penn Station in Manhattan. Distance from midtown to Montauk: around 175 km.

the pre-Christmas months to consuming huge quantities of food. Although relative newcomers to the gourmet scene, local restaurants are making up for lost time by turning out buffets and smörgåsbord of exceptional refinement. Decorated with hard-won Michelin stars, young chefs are now adding innovative twists to traditionally solid game and fish dishes, turning them into delicious works of culinary art. Says Norwegian master chef Bent Stiansen: “The old-fashioned julebord remains, but around the traditional Christmas tables you now find a new generation of sophisticated guests whose palates demand more than kjøttboller (meat balls), duck and lutefisk” (aged stockfish

soaked in lye – an acquired taste for non-Scandinavians). Not long ago, ordering the ubiquitous, caraway-flavoured spirit aquavit meant a choice between the Norwegian Linie version, the Danish Aalborg and the Sweden’s Skåne variety. season by taking an old-fashioned sleigh ride in the winter wonderland of Røros, Norway’s oldest mining town – a World Heritage site well worth a side trip from Trondheim, whose cathedral becomes a site of pilgrimage at Christmas . Christmas Celebration highlights in the CapitalsCOpEnhagEnFrom mid November Copenhagen, as in the rest of Scandinavia, is overrun by little folk from the fairy tales known as nisser. You’ll see them everywhere, in their long red caps and wooden clogs, precariously hanging by their fingertips in shop windows and city squares. Copenhagen’s holiday season sparkles with tasteful decorations. Twinkling white lights illuminate nativity scenes and, suspended across the streets, giant garlands of real spruce surround huge red hearts. Danish breweries add to the Yule spirit – as early as mid November horse-drawn Tuborg and Carlsberg wagons decked out with ribbons and Danish flags appear, delivering the year’s specially brewed Julebryg. (For Copenhagen’s best gløgg – mulled wine – make your way to Hviids Vinstue.) The villages of the Tivoli Gardens are open and aglow with Christmas lights and holiday life; more than 70 different stall keepers present their abundant selection of Danish Christmas décor, seasonal food and drinks.

OsLOThe Oslo Philharmonic’s Christmas Concerts take place at the Concert Hall during the last ten days before Santa arrives – for many citizens as much of a seasonal must as the lighting of the Christmas tree. The Christmas Fair at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History – Folkemuseet – is a popular place to shop for decorations, gifts and homemade crafts while observing how Norwegians have celebrated Christmas through the ages in their cabins and farmhouses. Choral music, folk dancing, Christmas sweets and hot gløgg are also served up at this popular spot.

stOCKhOLmThe Old Town market has been the centre of the celebrations for a century, with a hundred little red stalls selling glögg, gingerbread cakes, crafts, cheese and Christmas sweets. For a special treat, try the grand Christmas buffet of the Solliden restaurant at Skansen, Stockholm’s Open Air Museum. Stockholm’s archipelago is attractive also in winter; dress warm and hop on board for a Strömma cruise and check out the lunch and dinner buffets on these quaint boats, outfitted in their Christmas finery. Some even feature seasonal entertainment. On the last Sunday before Christmas there is a concert at Storkyrkan, the city’s beautiful cathedral, known for its great acoustics. On 13 December follow the colourful Lucia procession as it moves all the way around Skansen before entering the Storkyrkan.

Dublin: everyone’s a little Irish tonight

Why Dublin? It’s the craic, of course – that’s what the Irish call a good party. And you’ll find one in Dublin, as well as at the bottom of the inevitable couple of pints of Guinness. The Countdown Concert kicks off on 30 December at College Green with fireworks, street parties, and multi-storey 3D projec-tions – and goes on until 1 January. But that’s just the official bit. The rest of the boozing and cavorting goes on in hundreds of what is Ireland’s most famous export: the Irish pub. The ones around the famous Temple Bar area heave and jig, and the city’s winding atmospheric side streets get as raucous as, well, as an Irishman on New Year’s Eve. If you start to see leprechauns, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Amsterdam: go dutch or go home

Here’s a resolution for you. Vow to soak up the firework festivities as they light up the Amstel River and romantic canals throughout the city – you won’t be sorry. Join the big free party in front of the Rijksmuseum in a large square in the museum quarter, then wander through the bijou city centre, Chinatown, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein neighbour-hoods to take in the impromptu international street parties. It all goes off in a wild way inside Amsterdam’s many clubs and cafés too. No matter what – or how much – you eat or drink, come the first morning of the new year (and it might sneak up on you faster than you think), a breezy ride beside the canals on one of the city’s famous rental bikes will clear out any cobwebs hanging over from the old year.

Down comes the wall, up goes the party. Since 1989, the celebration at the foot of the history-heavy Brandenburg Gate has been legendary. They claim it’s the world’s largest organised New Year’s Eve party. With nearly one million people boogieing along a 2 km stretch, agoraphobics listen up: this may not exactly be your thing. Weave and wiggle between show stages, party tents, light and fireworks shows – and the street is lined with food and drink stalls. There are perform-ances from Kim Wilde, Udo Jürgens, Culture Beat, The Scorpions, DJ Ötzi, the Hermes House Band, Cassandra Wilson, Marianne Rosenberg, DJ BoBo, Hot Chocolate and The BossHoss. Don’t expect to hear your mobile phone when Mum calls to wish you Happy New Year.

fields; equipped with the latest technology; capable of storing 36,000 pallets; can house 750 different UNICEF supply items. Almost 300,000 kits – including products designed to meet a variety of emergency needs, especially for the critical areas of medical care, children’s education and protection – were packed here last year. “This is impressive,” Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos exclaims as he enters UNICEF’s Supply Division Warehouse in Copenhagen. He is flanked by two of his employees, Bjørg Helene Hellene and Camilla Christiansen, who have been invited along to launch Norwegian’s new in-flight UNICEF campaign, where passengers are encouraged to give an Inspiring Gift to children who need it the most.

Efficiency at the assembly line“Hurry up or there will be a jam,” orders Camilla jokingly to co-worker Bjørg. At the assembly line they’re packing UNICEF-branded cardboard boxes with a variety of medicines. “It takes time to put 12 pill containers into a box,” Bjørg responds. A few metres down the assembly line, dressed in UNICEF T-shirts, Bjørn Kjos and Executive Director Bernt G. Apeland of UNICEF Norway diligently fill the passing boxes with a variety of medicine containers. “Looks like you’re a bit rusty there, Bjørn,” Bernt says, smiling. “I don’t think you’ve watched me closely enough – the ladies here say I’m a natural, so I know what I’ll be doing when I quit Norwegian!” Bjørn parries. Hundreds of boxes are packed at this assembly line every day, including UNICEF’s “Inspiring Gifts”.

longer exist in Norway is frightening, but it is gives me hope as it requires so little effort from us to give them a better life.” Camilla agrees and adds: “I’m very proud to work for a company that supports UNICEF.” From 1 November, Norwegian will en-courage its passengers to support UNICEF by purchasing “Inspiring Gifts”, like the ones packed by Norwegian’s own employees at the Supply Division Warehouse, on board its flights. “These are genuine products such as vaccinations, medicines or school books that UNICEF gives to children that need them. By purchasing a gift card on board, you will not only give someone you love a meaningful present, you will also help children who need it the most,” concludes Bjørn Kjos.

head of developing, John E Knudsen, explains a little bit for us: “When my colleague and I sat down 2 years ago, we laid down the frame of the Centech Stove Guard. It had to be technically advanced, multipurpose capable, reliable, cost efficient and with an attractive design. Now we feel that we have achieved all these goals…and some more when we look at the finished product.”

What makes your product so different from the others on the marked? “First of all we are one of few who demand a constant power supply. This is a demand in the building regulations for fire detection systems, and we couldn’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be the same for the stove guard.Secondly we base our product on a High Res infrared detector. Combined with a powerful CPU that is capable of reading each tempera-ture spot several hundred times, each second. This makes the security level very high. And the capability of ruling out false alarms is far greater than some of our competitors.

the electrical installation business is not famous for groundbreaking designs. how will your stove guard blend in with the luxurious taste of today’s consumer? “We have put a lot of effort into the design of this product; it has to be discreet to fit into todays, modern kitchens. The primary concern was of course to make something out of the ordinary. Something the electrical business hadn’t seen before, and that had

curves to blend into every environment. We also thought about the fact that in some cases it had to be possible to custom build. I feel that we have achieved that goal with today’s design and production technique.”

With so many different installations today, with smart houses, intelligent alarm systems and so one. how do you think it is possible to integrate this product in these systems? “We were thinking on several solutions to this challenge. At first it would be natural to hook up with one of the bigger systems, like KNX. But with the development of the marked with new innovation and smaller producers with many good qualitys, we decided to base the communication upon a potential-free connection. That will enable us communicate with almost every system on the marked.”

how easy is it for the users to operate the stoveguard? “First of all, the StoveGuard is built for the user, never to consider its existence at all. But the possibility for situations causing the StoveGuard to go off is always there. We have added a reset switch, to allow the users to go beyond the alarmpoint for a short amount of time. Or reset the unit if it should be triggered. This is located on the unit itself. But we have also considered the elderly and disabled that may not reach to the back wall of the coocking top with ease. For this group we have developed a wireless switch, which can be integrated in existing lightswitch panels.”

We thank John Knudsen for his time, and look with excitement on a business pushed to innovation with the new regulations on household security. Time will show which test criteria CENELEC will present to regulate the business. In this way to exclude the less serious actors in this marked. We are sure that Cenika has covered all the loopholes and presents a high quality product, which will help make homes, safer for years to come.

Following the latest regulations for norwegian electrical installations, stove guard is now mandatory in every new built house in norway. several producers have entered the marked the last couple of years, most of them with products that are not up to standard. Each year 20% of the fires in private homes are caused by improper use of the stove/cooking top, and cost the society several million euros. the purpose of the stove guard is, unlike smoke detectors, to prevent fires. Cenika are these days laying their finishing touch on their contribution to the marked. Cenika is norwegian company situated outside of drammen, they operate in the professional segment of the electrical installation marked.

Ivo Gude Caprino (1920–2001) was a Norwegian animator, film producer,

director and inventor. The delightful puppet figures in his films have become national treasures, be they Solan (“Sonny Duckworth”) and Ludvig (“Lambert”) from Flåklypa Grand Prix, or Askeladden (“The Ashlad”) from his many film versions of old Norwegian folk tales.

Family of artistsIvo could thank both his mother and his wife for his great interest in stop-motion animation. His mother was the granddaughter of the famous Norwegian painter Hans Gude, and was an extremely talented illustrator and model maker. Through his wife, the actress Liv Bredal, Ivo was also introduced to the world of film. Ivo’s son, Remo Caprino, who now runs his father’s studios along with his own son, explains: “He wanted to do something with these fantastic puppet figures that my grandmother made, and started making films as a hobby alongside working in my grandfather’s furniture-making workshop. After a while, my grandfather gave him an ultimatum: ‘Do you intend to go on playing with dolls, or are you going to do some proper work?’” Fortunately, Ivo didn’t listen to his father, and in 1948 he made his debut with his first animated puppet film, using puppets modelled by his mother. There followed a large number of stop-motion animated puppet films, both shorts and feature films. He was particularly fond

of the traditional Norwegian folk tales, and his bringing-to-life of well-known figures from the much-loved stories has left a deep impression on many generations of Norwegians.

norway’s greatest-ever film successFlåklypa Grand Prix (released in the UK as Pinchcliffe Grand Prix) was Ivo Caprino’s biggest feature film production. It took seven people six years to create the film by stop-motion photography, which involved moving the puppets by small increments for every single frame. The film had its premiere in August 1975, to overwhelming public response, explains Remo Caprino, who was also involved on the production side as production manager, assistant director, and one of the four screenwriters. “It is definitively the biggest-ever box office hit in Norway and has sold 5.5 million cinema tickets. That we are still working with the film almost 40 years later is quite incredible,” says Remo Caprino. He explains that the film was originally intended as a series for broadcasting on Norwegian television, but the project was abandoned. And so for Ivo Caprino’s film company it was a case of “to be or not to be” – what eventually became a full-length feature film just had to be a success. As well as being Norway’s greatest movie success of all time, it has been dubbed into 13 different languages and has also topped the box office charts in many other countries.

the magic lives onBoth Caprino Filmcenter AS and Flåklypa Grand Prix are still very much alive and kicking. The family film business is the oldest in the world that is still owned and run by the same family. The foundation built by Ivo has become a thriving workplace for several generations of Caprinos. The Caprino studios have also restored the old folk-tale-based short films, and have moved on to using the new technology of computer animation. They have also developed a Flåklypa Grand Prix computer game, now available for PC, Nintendo DS, iPhone and iPad. “Dad instilled in me a golden rule, and that was never to compromise on quality, even if it doesn’t make you rich,” says Remo Caprino with a smile.

What was he like as a person?“He was a workaholic who always gave 110 per cent. I myself grew up inside a fairy tale; if I wanted to be with my father, it had to be in the studio. He was a fairy-tale hero of Norwegian film-making,” concludes Remo Caprino.

Alf Prøysen (1914–1970) is one of Norway's most-loved writers and lyricists. He made significant contributions to literature, music, TV and radio.

Sigrid Undset (1882–1949) was a Norwegian novelist. She received The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 for the books Kristin Lavransdatter and Olav Audunssøn.

Otto Neumann Sverdrup (1854–1930) is considered to be one of the three greatest Arctic explorers in Norway.

Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) is considered to be Norway’s greatest composer of the romantic period, and the one that has received most recognition abroad.

Sam Eyde (1866–1940) was a prominent Norwegian engineer and industrial entrepreneur. Together with Kristian Birkeland he found a method to use nitrogen contained in the air to produce mineral fertilisers. This created the basis for the Norwegian nitrogen industry, and the company Norsk Hydro.

Henrik Wergeland (1808–1845) is one of Norway’s most famous poets. He was the foremost cultural personality that the young nation fostered in the first half of the 1800s.

Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) is considered to be one of the world’s most important playwrights and the father of modern drama.

Greta Garbo (1905–1990) was a Swedish-American actress. She was a silent movie superstar and is ranked as the fifth-greatest female star of all times by the American Film Institute.

Tyge, a.k.a. Tycho Brahe (1546–1601) was a Danish astronomer. Brahe constructed astronomy instruments, and his observations were the most accurate ever made before the invention of the telescope.

Camilla Collett (1813–1895) was a Norwegian author, essayist and women’s rights activist. In her later works Collett’s commitment to women’s rights becomes clearer, stronger and more focused on men’s total domination of all aspects of society.

Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754) was one of the most prominent Nordic intellectuals of the Enlightenment period. He was a professor and a Baron, and produced many scientific works, comedies and novels.

Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian and psychologist. He is often referred to as the father of existentialism.

Carl von Linné (1707–1778) was a prominent Swedish botanist and medical doctor. He classified around 10,000 plant and 6,000 animal species. Parts of his complex system for classifying plants are used to this day.

Kristian Birkeland (1867–1917) was a professor of physics, with around 70 scientific theses to his name. Together with Sam Eyde he found a method to use nitrogen contained in the air to produce mineral fertilisers.

Piet Hein (1905–1996) was a Danish poet, author, inventor, mathematician and a true citizen of the world. He is well known for several geometrical figures.

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (1832–1910) was a Norwegian writer, poet and social commentator. He produced a wide range of works and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903.

Evert Taube (1890–1976) was a Swedish poet, folk singer and composer. Taube is regarded as one of the finest troubadours in Sweden.

Max Manus (1914–1996) was a prominent member of the Norwegian Resistance during the Second World War. He was famous for being one of the most brilliant saboteurs, and wrote several books about his sabotages.

Gidsken Jakobsen (1908–1990) is one of our foremost aviation pioneers. She was the first female leader of a Scandinavian airline.

Oda Krohg (1860–1935) was a Norwegian painter well known for her portrait and mood-reflecting paintings. Krohg was an integral part of the cultural and political movement the Christiania Bohemians.

Christian Krohg (1852–1925) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator, author and journalist. He was a leading figure in the transition from romanticism to naturalism.

Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) was a Swedish author most widely known for her children’s book The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909).

Jenny Lind (1820–1887) or Johanna Maria Lind was a Swedish opera singer known as the Swedish nightingale. Her extraordinary voice took her on tours in both Europe and the USA, and she was regarded as one of the best singers of the 19th century.

Povel Ramel (1922–2007) was a Swedish entertainer, composer, musician and writer. He was well known for his imaginative wit and is an institution in Swedish entertainment.

Georg Brandes (1842–1927) was a very influential Danish critic of Scandinavian and European literature. He is credited with formulating the principles of new realism and naturalism.

Erik Bye (1926–2004) was a Norwegian journalist and folk singer. He was one of the most popular television and radio figures in Norway in the 20th century. Erik Bye was well known for his commitment to the disadvantaged in society.

Carl Larsson (1853–1919) was a Swedish artist. He is regarded as one of the most important figures to have worked in the medium of watercolours, and he remains one of the most popular and well-known Swedish artists.

Amalie Skram (1846–1905) was a Norwegian author and feminist. She is known today as a great naturalistic writer, with a body of work that includes her multi-generational four-book story cycle Hellemyrsfolket (The People of Hellemyr).

Ole Bull (1810–1880)was a violinist and composer and often referredto as Norway’s first international star.

André Bjerke (1918–1985) was a Norwegian writer and poet, many of whose poems focused on childhood. Bjerke played an important role in Norwegian literature and language debate in the post-war period.

Karen Blixen (1885–1962) was a Danish author, best known for her books Seven Gothic Tales, Winter’s Tales and Out of Africa. Some of her works were written under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen.

Aksel Sandemose (1899–1965)was a Norwegian author who is best known for the novel A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks, which was originally published in 1933. The novel introduced the concept of the Jante Law – a peculiarly Scandinavian disapproval of individual success and achievement.

Gustav Vigeland (1869–1943) was a Norwegian sculptor. He is best known for the sculptures in Frogner Park (or Vigeland Park) in Oslo, one of the Norwegian capital’s major tourist attractions.

Aasmund Olavsson Vinje (1818–1870) was a Norwegian author and journalist. He is notable for his pioneering and consistent use of Norwegian Landsmål (now known as Nynorsk) in his writing.

Fridtjof Nansen (1861–1930) crossed Greenland on skis and carried out a very important and courageous polar expedition, crossing the Arctic Ocean in the ship Fram.

Jørn Oberg Utzon (1918–2008) was a Danish architect. He is best known for designing Sydney Opera House in Australia. Other commissions include Bagsværd Church on the outskirts of Copenhagen and the Kuwait National Assembly Building.

The Norwegian Oil Adventure Goes Forth into the NorthDet norske participated in the giant Sverdrup discovery, the third largest discovery ever made on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. We also participated in the important discovery on Norvarg in the Barents Sea.

During last year our petroleum resources tripled. Det norske is now embarking on the development of Jette, our fi rst development as operator. We were recently awarded an operatorship in the Barents Sea, and from our offi ce in Harstad we shall further explore the opportunities on Caurus.

The Norwegian oil adventure will go forth into the north.
