Meet Nat KomesAs General Manager, Nat’s job reaches into every aspect of
the wine business, from the making, marketing, and selling of
wine to the overseeing of employees. His morning begins at
7:00 AM with coffee and a priority review with his father. Then,
he responds to emails and phone messages, and starts the
day’s tasks, interspersed with meetings, tastings and blending
sessions. By noon, Nat points out, “you can usually find me
at the Golden Harvest enjoying the lunch special. I strongly
recommend the Singapore Rice Noodles!” Lunch is followed
by more meetings, reports and emails, and finishing tasks that
were begun in the morning.
Nat has been working at Flora Springs his whole life. During
his teenage years he filled in wherever help was needed—on
the bottling line, painting the winery, sampling sugars in the
vineyard, even washing his Uncle Pat Garvey’s vineyard truck.

2009 SangioveseRetail PRice: $20.00/Bottle
Forget what you may know about Cal-Ital wines, our 2009
Sangiovese is unlike anything you’ve tasted before. Our goal was
to create a wine that would recall the bright flavors of the best
Chiantis, yet still retain our Napa Valley identity. As we passed the
final blend around the table we couldn’t resist but finish what was
left in the bottle! The sweet fruit, the weight on the palate, and
the viscosity of the wine, it’s all there! We chose to use 3-year-
old French oak ovals, so not to overshadow the deep fruit flavors
we worked so hard to achieve. The subtle oak character gives
these flavors direction through the palate, producing a long and
lingering finish that fills the entire mouth.

2009 Poggio el Papa Retail PRice: $38.00/Bottle
In crafting our 2009 Poggio del Papa, we blended the intense,
bright fruit flavors of our hillside Sangiovese from Cypress Ranch
with the rich, dark fruit character found in our estate Cabernet
Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is
a harmonious blend of flavors to rival any of the great Super
Tuscan wines from Italy. Sangiovese is aged in neutral oak ovals,
to showcase the bright fruit components, while the Bordeaux
components are aged in a combination of new and once-used
French oak barrels to develop the deep fruit flavors. The subtle
oak character gives these flavors direction through the palate,
producing a long and lingering finish that fills the entire mouth.

2008 Rutherford Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford Retail PRice: $100.00/Bottle
Protected from the extremes of the 2008 growing season, our hillside
vineyard performed wonderfully and gave us exactly what we asked of
it: evenly ripened clusters, low yields, and small berry size. Following
fermentation, the wine was racked immediately to 100% French oak
barrels. The subtle balance of oak helps enhance the flavors and
aromas of black cherry, cassis and cocoa while allowing the nuances
of the Rutherford District to shine. This year’s bottling is ripe and
muscular while still retaining its trademark minerality and soft tannins.
The finish is classic Flora Springs—everlasting.

▼ Flora Komes celebrates an early 100th birthday with (standing, from left to right)
Sally Schweiger, Dolores Cakebread, Janet Trefethen, Molly Chappellet, Cathy
Corison and Shari Staglin, and (seated, left to right) Mary Novak and Robin Lail.
“I did anything that needed
doing,” laughs Nat, “I think my
brother Otto and I were Flora
Springs’ first janitors!”
Working so many positions has
prepared Nat for his current role
and given him the confidence to
bring new ideas to a traditional
business. “In the last two years,
Flora Springs has pioneered
an ‘outside the box’ style that
steers clear of the gimmicks and
fads that come and go in the
wine industry;” comments Nat,
“we’re ambitious, but we stay
true to our goal of making wine
that captures the exceptional
qualities of our vineyards.”
While not officially part of his
job description, Nat makes sure
his grandmother’s lively spirit
and sensibility remain part of
this winery. “My grandmother
Flora is very special to all of us
here. This October she turns
100 and we’re planning an open
house to celebrate her birthday.
We’re also renting out the local
movie theater where we’re
premiering our documentary.
Stay tuned!”
