Meet Dale Hickman This issue we salute our stalwart office manager Dale
Hickman, who is retiring this summer after 21 years of service.
Dale is our resident early bird, arriving every morning at 5:30!
Dale’s early bird tendencies first landed him the job at Flora
Springs. Back in 1989 when Dale was the manager at Napa
Valley Warehouse, he got to know another early morning riser,
John Komes. In the pre-dawn hours (while everyone else was
in bed!) they often shared a cup of coffee and discussed the
business of winegrowing—it wasn’t long before John lured
Dale to Flora Springs.
Dale is so down-to-earth and unassuming, you might think
he has led a mundane life. But not so! He has enjoyed quite
an interesting career and has made many longstanding
friends along the way. After brushing shoulders with
numerous, now-famous people (e.g., Steve Martin, John
McEuen1, Kathy Westmoreland2) at Garden Grove High
School in Southern California, Dale joined the Army for
three years, one of those years in Vietnam. Returning home,

2008 TrilogyRetail: $65/Bottle
It is hard for us to contain our excitement over the upcoming
release of the 2008 Trilogy; it may be our greatest ever! This
vintage exhibits all of the classic Trilogy attributes: a lovely cassis
and cherry bouquet and huge black fruit flavors that envelope the
palate. The layers of flavor go beyond anything we have previously
achieved and the mouth feel is wonderfully lush and polished. We
credit the consistent organic and sustainable farming practices
of our vineyard team as well as the focus and direction of our
winemaker Paul Steinauer. Each varietal is vital to the outcome
— the Cabernet exhibits a black cherry and dark cocoa character,
while the Merlot carries these flavors towards an everlasting finish
to the back of the palate. Malbec and Petit Verdot serve as our
spices to the blend. We are proud to say that after 33 years of
winemaking and 24 years of crafting Trilogy, Flora Springs is still
breaking new ground.

Balance, balance, balance–in life, in wine, after a bottle of wine–it’s
an elusive ambition. However, after thirty years of crafting world
renowned wines, the Flora Springs name has become synonymous
with perfectly balanced Napa Valley Chardonnay. The legacy
began when our inaugural vintage in 1978 was awarded a gold
medal at the Orange Country Fair. A few years later, our gold
status was bronzed when James Laube selected Flora Springs as
one of his “First Growth” producers of Chardonnay in his book
California’s Great Chardonnays.

2008 Out of Sight CabernetRetail: $85/Bottle
Despite its warm, western facing location, our Out of Sight vine-
yard tends to be one of the last vineyards we harvest—the luxury
of extra hang time makes fruit from here highly desirable. In 2008,
the long and warm growing season allowed for this vineyard to
reach optimal maturity. The 2008 Out of Sight Cabernet Sauvignon
exhibits the vineyard’s classic “plumminess” with a lush mouth feel
and complex finish. An engaging bouquet of violets and black cur-
rents is followed by richly extracted black fruit on the palate. The
finish is long and elegant, enhanced by soft, sweet tannins. With its
impeccable balance and bravado, this wine can be enjoyed early
for its youthful brilliance or aged for several years as its depth and
complexity evolve.

a
he took a job with U.S. Divers
Company that was founded by
Jacques Cousteau and his sons
whom he had the opportunity to
meet on several occasions. Dale
worked his way from entry level
to a management position. One
of the requirements in becoming
a manager at U.S. Divers was
learning how to scuba dive, a
skill which Dale quickly acquired,
dutifully exploring the shark-filled
waters off the coast of Catalina,
Laguna, and Huntington Beach.
After his stint at Cousteau’s scuba
manufacturing company, Dale
worked at Rockwell International
for 10 years before moving to
Northern California with his
wife, Jeanne (who, by the way, is
a proud “Napkin”). Dale and his
wife continue to live in the Napa
Valley. Their son, Shawn, also lives
here and works as a photographer
and freelancer at a St. Helena
photography studio. Dale is looking
forward to retirement, maybe some
golf, some travel, and perhaps
sleeping in every now and then!
