INDONESIA, an archipelago of over 18,000 islands, was first

formed by the tectonic plates of Asia and Australia slipping

under the Sunda one 60 million years ago. This tectonic

collision created the Sunda volcanic arc, and produced the

earthquake prone island chains of Sumatra, Java and Lesser

Sunda.

Populated by peoples who crossed over to its territories via an

ancient land bridge – one that disappeared when sea levels

rose after the ice caps melted 20,000 years ago – the region

has a rich history.

Before the waters rose, this land mass – called Sundaland –

linked the region to Asia in the west and Australia in the east.

The Java Man, unearthed in 1891 and believed to be 700,000

years old, indicates that man had a footprint in Indonesia

from early on. The Flores man, a dwarf no taller than a metre

discovered in 2003, also lived in the archipelago, and became

extinct only 12, 000 years ago. He is one of anthropology’s

most exciting discoveries.

Research reveals that the Indonesian peoples had fishing

and maritime skills from the early millennia. By 2,500 BCE the

islanders had evolved from fishing and hunter-gathering to

agriculture, growing crops such as taro, bananas and millet.

These early farmers also made pottery, but used stone tools.

By 700 BCE the Indonesians had learnt to forge bronze and

iron, as well as practice wet rice cultivation. Various kingdoms

emerged, and from 400 BCE, Indonesians traded with China

and India, Hinduism and Buddhism influencing traditional

beliefs. By the 8th century CE, Indonesian civilisation was

flourishing. Amongst its many kingdoms was a powerful Hindu

one in central Java called Sailandra. Then there was the great

Buddhist kingdom of Sriwijaya in south Sumatra. From the 7th

to the 13th century Sriwijaya prospered. It became a maritime

empire controlling western Java, and part of the Malay

Peninsula.

Indonesia – today the biggest Muslim country in the world with 250 million

citizens – is living evidence of Islam not being spread by the sword

Meanwhile, Islam was brought to East Asia by Arab merchants

in the 7th century as they followed the monsoon winds from

the Persian Gulf. Islam first gained a toehold in Aceh in north

Sumatra and spread throughout the rest of Indonesia, mainly

from the 15th century onwards. In north Sumatra, however,

there are Muslim graves dated 44-48 AH (665-669 CE).

Indonesia – today the biggest Muslim country in the world

with 250 million citizens – is living evidence of Islam not being

spread by the sword. The kings on the Malacca Straits were

impressed by the integrity of the Muslim merchants, and a

large number accepted Islam. Intermarriage played a large

part in conversions too, especially in Sumatra.

The early Muslims were sought after as ideal spouses. The rajas

and the sultans considered it an honour to have an Arab marry

within the family and the Sayyids, the descendants of the

Prophet, were especially revered. The famous Hindu Majapahit

court itself came under Islamic influence, and by 1450, Islam

was its dominant faith. Islam rose in Indonesia from a Hindu-

Buddhist matrix, and Sufism became its social fulcrum. Shaykh

Hamza al-Fansuri of Aceh is one of the archipelago’s best

known Sufi poets. Possibly the greatest exponent of tasawwuf in

the Malay language is Shaikh Nuruddin al-Raniri (d. 1666). The

root of Indonesian tasawwuf is Qadiriyyah-Naqshbandi with

Shattari, Khalwatiyyah and Ba ‘Alawiyyah influences.

But as Islam was expanding throughout the region, the Spanish

fleets sailed into the ports of the Far East. Shortly after the

King of Manila had embraced Islam, the Spanish embarked

upon a bloody Inquisition that catholicised the Philippines.

The Portuguese arrived, followed by the Dutch who occupied

parts of Indonesia in the 17th century under the flag of the

Dutch East India Company. Many Islamic leaders who resisted

Dutch hegemony were exiled to the Cape, hence the landing

in South Africa of Shaikh Yusuf of Makasar in 1694. Regarded

as a living saint, he was a scholar of such status that he was

allowed to lecture in the Makkah Haram. He is an Indonesian

national hero and regarded as one of the founding fathers of

South African Islam. In 1994 Nelson Mandela acknowledged

him as a pioneer resistance figure.

– who arrived in the Cape and their karamats, or tombs, are

dotted around the Cape Peninsula. Shaikh Abdurahman

Matarah (Mataram), who lies on Robben Island, was from

central Java and a Yemeni scholar. Sayyid Mahmud and

Shaikh Abdurahman Matebe Shah (both buried in Constantia)

arrived in 1668 and were from the kingdom of Malacca.

Another great scholar, Imam Abdullah ibn Qadi Abdus Salam

(Tuan Guru) from Tidore and of Moroccan ancestry, landed at

the Cape in 1780, writing the Qur’an from memory while on

Robben Island and transcribing the Umm ul-Barahin, a book

on belief that was used in Cape madrasahs for over 200 years.

Indonesia’s loss was most definitely South Africa’s gain. The Sufi

Shaikhs carried on their work at the Cape, drawing circles of

escaped slaves and the local Khoi-San around them. Shaikh

Nur ul-Mubeen, who legend says escaped from Robben

Island by swimming to the mainland, taught Islam away from

the eyes of the Dutch authorities beside a mountain stream

above Oudekraal.

And whilst the Dutch had left the Cape by the 1830s, Indonesia

had to suffer Dutch hegemony until the Second World War,

only declaring independence in 1945. The country’s first post-

colonial leader was Sukarno, the son of a Java nobleman

who’d married a Balinese Brahma. He established the new

state on five principles: Islam, national unity, democracy and

social justice. Sukarno, who saw himself as a leader for life,

was deposed by General Suharto in 1966. Suharto, who ruled

for 32 years, did oversee significant socio-economic growth

during his tenure and under his rule Indonesia did become the

first developing nation to launch a communications satellite in

1976, but his foray into East Timor (it cost over 150,000 lives),

authoritarianism, cronyism and wholesale corruption blighted

his legacy.

Suharto left office after the 1998 Asian market crash and

was replaced by Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, who instituted

reforms, but did not complete his term of office. The current

president is Joko Widodo, the first Indonesian leader not to hail

from the military or the political elite.

Archipelago of dreamsIn December 2004 Indonesia was hit by the Asian tsunami,

the result of an earthquake off Sumatra setting off an energy

equivalent to 23, 000 nuclear explosions. It caused over

200,000 deaths and totally ravaged the Sumatran coast,

especially Aceh.

Another natural event was the eruption of the Krakatoa

volcano in 1883 that caused 30 metre high tsunamis, and

whose explosions were heard as far as Perth in Australia and

Mauritius, rupturing the eardrums of sailors 64 kilometres away

from the island. As the world’s fourth largest country, Indonesia

is probably the least known – and indeed, with its exotic

islands, ancient aboriginal tribes, jungles, giant flowers that

smell like rotting meat, the biggest Buddhist temple on earth,

pristine tropical beaches and romantic seas, it certainly is the

archipelago of dreams.
