January 2016 Volume 27 Number 1 SERMON SERIES CONTINUES IN JANUARY “NOT The Usual Suspects” Join us on Sunday mornings as we continue to look at some of the “overlooked” people in the Bible! Faith is all about trust, wouldn’t you agree? But the two things are different. Someone pointed out that faith is a noun it is something we have, while trust is a verb something we do. It is like that old illustration of looking at a chair and being asked if you think it can hold you. To say “Yes, I believe it can hold me” is faith. But being willing to sit on it is trust. Trust is faith in action. So let’s test our trust in God this year –and please read that correctly: test our trust in Him, NOT test Him. The test is a simple statement, a perfect one for a new year. Ready? Here it is: GOD, SURPRISE ME!. That’s it. No lists, no plans, no resolutions (which are all good but those are tests). “God, surprise me” is a test of trust. Think about what you are saying: “I believe you, Lord, are in control. I believe that nothing happens to me that you are not in, and that you can provide for me whatever it is that I need. I believe that my life is yours and I completely and wholly offer it to you. I believe that no matter what, you are good, you are loving, you are God. So go ahead, surprise me this year Lord, I trust you.” So take a minute...or more...to think about it. SERMON SERIES CONTINUES IN JANUARY

“NOT The Usual Suspects” Join us on Sunday mornings as we continue to look at

some of the “overlooked” people in the Bible!

Faith is all about trust, wouldn’t you agree? But the two things are different.

Someone pointed out that faith is a noun – it is something we have, while trust is a

verb – something we do. It is like that old illustration of looking at a chair and

being asked if you think it can hold you. To say “Yes, I believe it can hold me” is

faith. But being willing to sit on it is trust. Trust is faith in action.

So let’s test our trust in God this year –and please read that correctly:

test our trust in Him, NOT test Him. The test is a simple statement, a perfect one

for a new year. Ready? Here it is: GOD, SURPRISE ME!. That’s it. No lists, no plans,

no resolutions (which are all good but those are tests). “God, surprise me” is a test

of trust. Think about what you are saying: “I believe you, Lord, are in control. I

believe that nothing happens to me that you are not in, and that you can provide for me whatever it is

that I need. I believe that my life is yours and I completely and wholly

offer it to you. I believe that no matter what, you are good, you are

loving, you are God. So go ahead, surprise me this year Lord, I trust

you.”

So take a minute...or more...to think about it. And when you are ready

to really trust God without strings this year, go ahead and say it: “GOD,

SURPRISE ME!” And then step back and watch in wonder what he does.

It may just surprise you!

Happy New Year,

MISSIONS GLOBAL MISSIONS OUTREACH TEAM (GMOT) In October, Centerpoint’s GMOT sent a mission team to Ensenada,

Baja, Mexico to serve with two local churches hosting Marriage

Conferences for couples. Together these attracted over 70 couples

in an atmosphere of worship, fun, food, teaching and glorifying

God. The response and appreciation we received from the couples,

the pastors and their volunteers focused on how these events

encouraged the couples to grow their relationship and their walk

with Christ.

In addition to the Marriage Conferences our team had the

opportunity to participate in a ministry to Ensenada’s commercial

fishermen and a children’s breakfast ministry. They also had the joy of seeing Nellie & Ramone, the

owners of our May 2015 house-build, who attended one of the Marriage Conferences and remembered

our team with fondness and thanksgiving.

Thank you to Centerpoint for supporting and sending our mission teams throughout the world!

Upcoming Global Missions and Mission Service Opportunities include:

• Haiti Mission with Hands & Feet Ministry, January 2016 - This Centerpoint team has been

assembled and will serve with Hands & Feet Ministry’s Haitian orphanages. Please keep the team in

your prayers.

• Ensenada House-Build Mission Teams, May & June, 2016 - Please consider joining one of the

teams.

• Uganda Mission with Hope Alive, January, 2017 - Centerpoint is planning to send a mission team

to Uganda in January 2017. The team will work with local churches providing training in leadership,

English, and household skills.

• Mission Fund-Raising Dinner, September 30, 2016 - Reserve the date on your calendar. Please

consider joining the Planning Team that will begin meeting in Spring 2016.

Check the February Pulse for an exciting report on our Thanksgiving week house-build!

If you would like to learn about these and other Centerpoint mission opportunities, please contact John

Sprague at 402-9825, Dennis Alias at 208-8064 or Marlena Sprague at 521-0982.

“Hosea”

Led by Doug Finch - Wednesday evenings 6:30-8:30pm in the Annex

This study of the book of Hosea not only explores the historical meaning of the text

plan of redemption and indescribable love through the life and times of Hosea, in

effect making it an Old Testament enactment of John 3:16. Come and learn what

Hosea has to teach us about how we are to live in our present day culture and the

potential spiritual dangers we face.

“Living In Exile –’We’re Not in Kansas Anymore’”

Presented by Dr. Merilyn Copland - Saturday, January 30, 9am–12noon

Christians in America have experienced a major cultural shift that is

frightening and disorienting. How should we respond? Come explore the exile

of the historical people of Israel and how this prepared the way for the world-

wide spreading of God’s message. Contact Karen Fales at 782-3186 x26 or

[email protected]. Cost is $10 per person, $20 per family.

Childcare is available by reservation.

SENIOR ADULT LUNCHEON Thursday, January 14 at 11:45am

The program for the January Senior Adult Ministry luncheon will be

presented by Carol Garcia, Mayor of Roseville. She will share general

information about the city, the city’s economic climate, as well as

advantages and challenges that Roseville faces as a full-service city

owning its own utilities. Carol is a 5th generation Roseville resident and

has solid roots through local volunteerism and community banking.

She attended Roseville schools and CSU, Sacramento. Over a 35-year

career in local banking she has held many responsible management

positions. She has been active in several of the community’s

philanthropic organizations. A breast cancer survivor, she

is co-founder and currently chair of the Placer Breast Cancer

Endowment, raising $1.5 million for breast cancer research. You will

want to hear one of Roseville’s most dynamic speakers.

The luncheon begins at 11:45 am in the church dining room. Our caterer will prepare Chicken Alfredo,

salad, garlic bread, beverages, and Italian Cream Cake. Senior Adult Ministry luncheons are open to all,

regardless of age. Please invite a friend or family member to attend with you. Reservations must be made

by Tuesday, January 12th by calling Bob or Diane McCarthy at 783-9295. (Cancellations may also be made

by calling by that deadline.) Those unable to attend the luncheon may join us for the program at 12:45

pm. The cost of the luncheon is $8.00 per person, payable at the door.

Save the Date! 2016 Men’s Retreat

Speaker is Dr. Bradley Howell, Fuller Seminary

Mark your calendars for our 2016 Men’s Retreat on April 8-10, 2016

at Zephyr Cove in Lake Tahoe. We’re excited about our speaker,

Dr. Bradley Howell, who having worked his way down the church “corporate” ladder from lead pastor to

junior high minister, now finds himself in the mire of middle life and the threshold of empty nested-ness.

Brad is author of articles like Finding Love One Byte at a Time, Social Media Myth Busting, and Using

Social Media to Strengthen Family Bonds. He is a contributing author to the upcoming youth ministry

textbook, Adoptive Youth Ministry: Integrating Emerging Generations into the Family of Faith. He directs

Fuller Seminary's campus in Sacramento and is a Professor of Youth, Family and Culture. Consider

inviting a friend to our 2016 retreat! Please contact John Sprague if you have any questions:

[email protected] or 402-9825.

PRAYER MINISTRIES Join A Prayer Team!

Are you willing to pray? We have 11 different

prayer teams at Centerpoint, and each of them is

looking for new team members. Some prayer

teams meet on campus, while other prayer teams

are “virtual,” sharing requests via email or phone,

with members praying on their own schedules.

For many of these teams, you don’t have to be

comfortable praying aloud, but can pray silently

instead.

At Home Pray-ers. This team receives a weekly email list of prayer requests that they pray for

during the week.

Baby Prayer Team: Receive confidential email prayer requests to pray about pregnancies,

infertility, adoptions and infants in our church.

Community Prayer for the Nation: Join with Christians from across our region to pray for our

nation. This team rotates meeting at various churches, including Centerpoint, on the first

Saturday of each month. This month’s location is Hillside Church on Saturday, January 2 at 7:00am.

Military Prayer Group: Pray for troops that are connected with Centerpoint and their families

together with this team on the 2nd Sunday of each month (January 10 this month) at 9:00am in

the Chapel. You can also pray by receiving email prayer requests.

Prayer Partners: Pray with individuals after each Sunday worship service. Training is provided.

Each prayer partner serves about once a month, for just a few minutes after the service you

usually attend.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Pray while knitting or crocheting shawls that are given to those who are

hospitalized, have chronic illnesses, or have lost a loved one. An easy-to-follow pattern is

available, as well as occasional seminars to teach you how to crochet! The team meets every

other month at Centerpoint, but you can participate even if you can’t attend the meetings.

Sunday Service Prayer Teams: Come a half-hour early to church one Sunday a month (or more

often if that fits your schedule) to pray for all that is happening at Centerpoint that day. These

teams meet in Room 119 of the Family Life Center at 8:00, 9:15, and 10:40am.

Tuesday Prayer Team: Join others on Tuesday mornings at 6:30am in the Family Life Center

Dining Room to pray for the needs of our church family, our church's ministries, and our

community.

Urgent Prayer Chain is a phone prayer chain that prays for those experiencing urgent health

situations, such as surgeries. You can pray on your own schedule during the day.

To connect with any of these teams, contact Lynn Jorgenson, Prayer Coordinator, at 791-7447

or [email protected]
