The Beauty

Corrado Manaresi’s opinion on fashion, energyand culture in nowadays Russia

“Russia is a riddle wrappedin a mystery inside an

enigma”, wrote Winston Chur-chill. And this riddle has beensolved by Corrado Manaresi, agreat Italian expert in the Russianmarket and an expert of the souland culture of one of the largestcountries in the world. “Almostas if it were written in their DNA,Russians love beautiful things:glamour, fashion and luxury. They deeply love their culture, their history, their art and litera-ture – says Corrado Manaresi, who has been travelling through

Russia for more than 20 years, ashe works in the fashion area.“We need to understand this co-untry, respect their history, cultu-re and traditions. As for business,Russians appreciate straightfor-ward and transparent peoplewho are not too overconfidentabout their skills. After havingovercome the 1998 rouble crisis,Russia has accumulated hugewealth thanks to its energy re-sources, the large availability ofraw materials and the enormousgrowth of the real estate market. This is a country with more and

more capital to invest and moneyto spend. The “Made in Italy”brand is still an effective businesscard. The great designers’ nameshave always been the main at-traction in the fashion world, and the Italian ones are theirmost prestigious expression. Inaddition to luxury brands, “massmarket” is also establishing it-self, thanks to the proliferationof new shopping malls. The Ita-lian fashion market and manyother firms should thus saythanks to the Russian market, without which they probably

would not have achieved the sa-me success. Italy is now well re-presented and more and moreappreciated in the area of designand interior design, too, whilestill having some troubles in as-serting itself in the automotivefield, a market dominated byGerman carmakers like Mercedesand BMW and the Japanese. Butthe great Italian brands like Fer-rari, Maserati and Lamborghini, which landed in Russia someyears ago (to tell the truth, so faronly in Moscow), are also buil-ding their own market ni-

che.”Indispensable guidance isprovided to Corrado Manaresi byhis wife Maria Grazia, whofluently speaks five languages,Russian included.“Russians areboth cultured and educated.Young male and female entre-preneurs are highly trained, speak two or three languagesand are always updated in re-gards to world issues. They arewasting no time in making upfor lost ground.”In a future whe-re superpowers like China andIndia seem to be in the forefront, what will be the role played by

Russia? “Compared to China orIndia, Russia is much closer toEurope and is now the largestenergy supplier, having 25% ofworld resources. In addition tothis, this country has been stea-dily changing for the last 15years, mainly in cities, and is stillchanging. The 2014 WinterOlympics in Sochi will be the firstimportant international showca-se, and Putin is investing a lot toshow the world that Russia hasbecome once again one of thegreat powers of the world. May-be the greatest.”

Federico Barbarossa is a namenot to be easily forgotten:

from Genoa, 52, a long past ex-perience in the world of 5-starhotels, Barbarossa started his ca-reer in Sardinia in the 1970s. To-day he works as first concierge atthe Hotel Cala di Volpe, on CostaSmeralda, and is the president ofthe Italian section of Chiavi d’Oro(UIPA, the Italian association ofhotel concierges), which boasts al-most 400 congierges from thebest Italian hotels and is affiliatedwith the international association“Les Clefs d’Or” present in 40

countries. Married to a journalist, and a literature lover (“I readSchiller in German and Shake-speare in English, and I also speakSpanish and French”), FedericoBarbarossa, born under the zodiacsign of Cancer, tells the “extraor-dinary ordinariness” behind theprofession of concierge: “Whatdistinguishes 5-star hotels is right-ly the presence or absence of aconcierge, who can be defined asa man who has made culture ofhospitality his creed. well as plane tickets, train ticketsor sports tickets, and whateverother request a customer mayneed. Moreover, he can rely onthe international network of ourassociation: for example once aguest needed to know the nameof the best florist of New York. Myanswer was only a phone callaway to an American col-league….” Outgoing and dynam-ic in his choices, Federico Bar-barossa has created “Il bollettinodelle Chiavi d’oro” online (whichhe hopes to soon turn into a mag-azine), and at the same time is

committed to training the newconcierge candidates at highschool level: “In this profession, which hotel directors rightly de-fine “as the added value of a ho-tel”, it is fundamental for candi-dates to start working as soon aspossible, initially through intern-ships and specialised mastercourses. This is a good start topromoting and defending theconcierge profession”. On top ofthat, through “Le Chiavi d’oro”association Barbarossa would liketo resume contacts with other Ital-ian concierges working abroad, so

that the senior members of the as-sociation can share and pass ontheir life long experience toyounger concierges. And forthose who would like to becomeconcierges, what skills are re-quired? “Certainly a title of hotelreceptionist and the knowledge oflanguages: but fundamental re-quirements are willingness tohelp, flexibility, good attitude to-wards clients and empathy. Re-member that nothing is impossi-ble for a client, and that love forhospitality is fundamental: we arethe ambassadors of our country”..

Her name is Maria José De SilvaVentura, but everybody knows

her as Mizé, the symbol of a newAfrica. A fashion designer with rootsboth in Angola and Germany, whereshe studied fashion, today she livesin Koln with her two daughters andher husband André Thomsen (“In asplendid home in a castle…”), andGermany is the country where in2002 she launched her first collec-tion, with a brand name that has be-come an established symbol of wo-men’s fashion. Mizé proposes gla-mour, luxurious and elegant fashioninspired by Africa. “I have always lo-ved playing with dolls, and when Iwas a child I decided I wanted to be-come a fashion designer. I studied inGermany while my mother, a busi-ness woman who reached Europewhile fleeing the war in Angola, tra-

velled between Germany, Portugaland Africa”. In 1997, with the helpof her husband, Mizé set up her firstEuropean fashion show, and a yearlater she jumped in heart and soul in-to the fashion world. “I started withbridal dresses. Then I managed ashop in Koln for three years and Ilearned about customer relationsand business management”. NowMizé and her husband want to resto-re contacts with Africa: “We want totake luxury items to Africa, to showpeople Africa is not only an unhappycountry but is also an interesting pla-ce to visit, where one can get toknow really unique and stimulatingpeople. Despite that Africa is still ne-gatively depicted, this is a continentof enormous contrasts: Angola, forexample, is a wonderful country thatafter war is finally changing for the

best”. Mizé, who was born underthe Cancer sign, is also socially com-mitted: “I would like to help build aschool in Angola, build my own ho-me in Africa, and create an orphana-ge here in Germany. I would like tocall this project Valentina, like mydaughter…”What is your idea offashion? “At present I’m creatingclothes for women and children, butsooner or later I will also start to crea-te men’s clothes. My fashion is desi-gned for a happy satisfied woman.Everything originates from my ideasand my collaboration with Natalia, adear friend of mine. We have a lookaround, we try to write down ourideas, we go to Paris to see collec-tions and find all the fabrics weneed, and then our collection slowlytakes shape. man simply needs to be in harmonywith herself”. Are you preparing anew collection? “Of course. A collec-tion of very light and transparentcocktail dresses, these are very femini-ne and colourful, because colour isback”. Do you sell your creations ex-clusively in Germany? “Yes, for themoment, but this year I will start witha show room in Angola and for thefuture I’m looking at Europe, Russiaand the USA. Moreover, this year so-me of my clothes were worn by fa-mous TV personalities, which was agreat promotion for me”. ror” that reflects the images, thoughts and memories the analy-sed subject freely expresses. In theframe of micropsychoanalysis thisrecovery of one’s inner self can beemphasized through the analysis ofphotos from a family album througha magnifying lens. “By observingthe images of one’s childhood and

his family members, the analysedsubject becomes aware of the ex-tent to which he was influenced bythe past. His father and mothertransmitted much more than onlythe colour of eyes or hair. In fact, wealso inherit from our ancestors im-portant standards in our way of li-ving. This does not mean we always

imitate their behaviours. But alsowhen we behave in a totally diffe-rent way from them, we actually fol-low their pattern of life. Repetition ismore inherent in the human beingthan what we are willing to accept. This awareness allows the analysedsubject to be in peace with himselfand consequently with others. Afterseveral sessions the subject overco-mes his guilty feelings and gets ridof his inner conflicts. Then he will re-gain the infinite potentials of hiscreative skills everyone of us has butis afraid of using”.The analyticalwork helps every subject to accom-plish what he desires – if he reallywants it. Obstacles are in fact mostlyinterior. But when can an analysistreatment be considered termina-ted? “Like any natural processanalysis has a beginning and an end.It is over when the analysed subjectbecomes autonomous in analysinghis dreams. This is the momentwhen the analysed subject becomeshis own analyst”. It happens to ever-yone to have strange dreams but –Rocchitelli adds – “this is not true!Dreams belong to a different lan-guage than the everyday one. Andthis language becomes incompre-hensible when the subject has notthe key to interpret it. Analysis al-lows the subject to understand thevocabulary of the unconscious. Onthe other hand, Freud said dreamsare the main way to have access tothe unconscious. Human nature pre-serves in dreams the deepest truthsof ourselves. A dream holds the indi-vidual and collective memories ofmankind”.And if one thinks analysisis a luxury, this is not true: “It is a lu-xury, though not an economic one. Ihave met billionaires who have ne-ver undergone analysis, though theyneeded it. One of them in particularhad a prevailing masochist attitudethat led him to destroy his patri-mony. He had inherited a fortunefrom his father with whom he hadnot managed to reconcile with. Then there is the case of an emplo-yee who, by choosing to invest mo-ney in herself, had fully exploited her

Thanks to mi-cropsychoanalysis this woman ex-perienced a “rebirth” that led herto enjoy her life and relativize griefthat she hadn’t caused herself, fee-ling guilt-free. Therefore analysis is aluxury, but ….as the Latins meant it.The word luxury derives from Latinlux, which means light. Actually, those who listen to themselves inthe dim light of a micropsychoa-nalysis studio bring light to theirshadows. When an analysed sub-ject succeeds in enlightening his in-ner life he allows himself the luxuryof becoming what he really is.

Il so-
