In most states there are requirements. You should contact your Secretary of State website for their requirements. Since California has strict standards this presentation will be based on California requirements and suggestions.
If there is not a course requirement, you should still take one to make sure you know what the opportunities and understand the states process of a Notary Public. This will help you reduce your risk of making costly errors.
California state requirements: Every person appointed as a notary public shall:– be 18 years of age or older (there is no maximum age set by statute) – be a legal California resident – complete a mandatory course of study approved by the Secretary of State – satisfactorily complete and pass a written examination prescribed by the

Cell phone – this is your lifeline to your clients. Most signing companies and lenders call once and if you don’t answer they move onto the next person in the area.
Printers – Invest in a good multi-functional laser printer with a dual tray. Multi-functional printers have a fax, scanner, and copier as well as a printer. Always have a new toner cartridge standing by in case it runs out of toner in the middle of printing e-docs as you won’t have time to run and purchase one.
Fax – have a dedicated line to your fax so that you can receive while you are away and without interrupting a call with a client.
Scanner – most Multi-Functional printers have this built in Email & Web Address - get your own domain and company name. Make
sure it is professional and it will match your website address. Pagers - do not work for notaries, unless they speak to a human on the
first dial they will move on to the next notary on their list.

Pens – have a box of blue and black pens available in your briefcase Sticky Flags – mark all signature spots, recycle them by removing them
and putting them on the inside cover of your journal
