TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

POOR BOX COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND: Over the last

several months we have been able to help some of our neighbors

with much needed furniture through both the St. Vincent de Paul

Society warehouse and Angels in Overalls. We do pay for the

furniture and delivery costs although at reduced prices. Plus, this

supports these much needed ministries. We have also helped

several neighbors with utility assistance to prevent shut-offs. This

weekend we have a Poor Box Collection to replenish our Social

Ministry account so we can continue to help our neighbors in

need. Thank you for your generosity!

FOOD BANK THANKS: Thanks to all who so generously

donate to this monthly collection for our Brentwood Food

Pantry. Your donations, minus a few items that we keep here at

the parish for emergency assistance, was given out to local

families and individuals on Saturday, August 18th. Your

donations help others stretch their food budgets. This month we

also collected school supplies and we thank you for those as

well. These were given to families with children who use the

food bank. Thank you for your generosity.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY THANKS! Your donations are being

distributed to our nursing home parishioners and to Red Door,

Shepherd’s Heart, Jubilee Kitchen and the Allegheny County

Jail. A special THANK YOU to Religious Education student

Dominic Nicoletti who is preparing for Confirmation. He made

almost 50 cards that we included with our parish gift to our

nursing home parishioners. Those who received them really

appreciated the uplifting message. And thanks to all who brought

in their Christmas in July gifts for us to share!.

LADIES OF CHARITY NEWS: We are in the process of

delivering our parish's Christmas in July gifts to our nursing home

parishioners. Our next trip to Bethlehem Haven is Wednesday,

September 12th. Our next meeting is Thursday, September 6 th,

7PM in the Rectory meeting room. We will be making

sandwiches for Shepherd’s Heart after the meeting. Cookies

needed.

CONNECTING WITH OUR HOMEBOUND AND

NURSING HOME PARISHIONERS: As St. Sylvester ’s

works with our new group to strengthen our parish we want to

make sure that all our older parishioners are connected to the

parish. If you know of a parishioner who has not been able to get

to Mass because of illness or age please let the Rectory office

know and we can reach out to them. In addition, if you know of a

parishioner who is now in a nursing home or assisted living

facility and they are not already receiving a visit from our Ladies

of Charity, please let us know that as well. Thanks.

ARE YOU A FAMILY CAREGIVER? Being a caregiver for a

family member can be physically and emotionally draining even

when we love the person and are happy to help. There are many

resources out there to help us understand what we are feeling.

Check out www.caregiveraction.org .

CENTERING PRAYER IN SEPTEMBER: Our centering

prayer dates for September are Wednesdays the 5th and the

19th. On the 5th we will meet in the Providence Room and on the

19th we will meet in the Rectory meeting Room. Both meetings

are at 7PM and we will continue our study of Open Mind, Open

Heart by Fr. Thomas Keating after our centering prayer. If you

would like more information about this method of contemplative

prayer, call the Social Ministry office.

ALZHEIMER'S RESOURCES: Are you caring for someone

with Alzheimer's or do you know someone who is? Here are two

books that come highly recommended: Thoughtful Dementia

Care: Understanding the Dementia Experience by Jennifer Ghent

-Fuller and Learning to Speak Alzheimer's by Joanne Koenig

Coste. Both are available from Amazon. For more info call the

Social Ministry office.

FIND LOCAL RESOURCES: The United Way of Allegheny

County has a helpline and can find resources and answer

questions about local resources. Dial 211 to be connected to this

local resource clearinghouse.

SOCIAL MINISTRY QUOTE: “The Lord promises

refreshment and freedom to all the oppressed of our world, but he

needs us to fulfill his promise. He needs our eyes to see the needs

of our brothers and sisters. He needs our hands to offer them help.

He needs our voice to protest the injustices committed thanks to

the silence, often complicit, of so many. I should really speak of

many silences: the silence of common sense; the silence that

thinks, ‘it’s always been done this way;’ the silence of ‘us’ as

opposed to ‘you.’ Above all, the Lord needs our hearts to show

his merciful love towards the least, the outcast, the abandoned,

the marginalized.” Pope Francis, July 6, 2018 ***************************************************** BIBLE STUDY - The St. Sylvester Bible Study will resume

its meetings for the reading and study of Sacred Scripture on

Tuesday evening, September 4 at 6:30 pm in the Rectory

Meeting Room. Members of the study group are reminded that

they must register for the new series by September 1. New

members are welcome. For more information call Dr. Ross

Cafaro at 412-885-1625.
