MAY Respect | Responsibility | Sincerity | Perseverance 2018 Yours sincerely, Mdm Mae Quah 1 Note Dear Parents, It had been a busy and an amazing month of April as we look back at the wonderful achievements accomplished by the students, especially from the CCA groups who participated in the various inter-school competitions. The students have dedicated themselves fully in their preparation for these competitions, faithfully going for their regular training sessions. They exemplify the attitude we hope every Nan Chiau student will have responsibility and perseverance. Not only did they develop sportsmanship and social skills, but they also formed lasting friendships with their fellow teammates. We applaud their tenacity and effort in achieving their goals and are very proud of their achievements. In our eyes, all of them are winners. We would like to thank all parents for their strong support in helping our students manage both school work and CCA. Thank you parents! Since the mid-year examination period is just round the corner, let’s help our students get ready by ensuring that they have adequate sleep and have a healthy breakfast before coming to school so that they can focus well during examinations. As the first semester draws to an end, on behalf of the staff, I wish you and your family a happy, relaxing and delightful June holiday. Mdm Mae Quah Principal

2Primary 1 Theatre Experience

On 12 April, Rise & Shine and Life Buoy cameto conduct a talk. It consisted of a simple skit& quick Q&A session. The focus was tohighlight the importance of personalhygiene. There was a skit on a researcher’sjourney to:*Discover the harmful effects of germs

*Glo-grem demo to share the differencebetween someone who washes their handswith soap vs hands with just water

*8-step hand washing techniques in a funsing-along routine

1

Isabelle Chia Jia En (1SC): I learnt from the story that we should treat others like how

you want to be treated.Tan Tze Xuan, Caitlin (1SC):

We should be quiet in the theatre because we should not disturb the performers.

Miley Soo Zhi Rui (1SC):

We keep our hands and legs to ourselves.Liew Yi Xuan (1SC): We should not eat in

the theatre so that we do not dirty the place.

During the show, they were awed by thefantastic performances. The dramaticactors on the stage, mesmerising lights, enchanting music, funny characters withtheir witty lines successfully engaged thestudents throughout the show

Students also learnt some valuablelessons from the story which were thenused as learning points duringdiscussions after the learning journey.

Our youngest batch of students went fortheir first learning journey to the SingaporeRepertory Theatre to watch a musical showbased on the popular classical story titledThe Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen.

Before going for their theatre experience, students were equipped with the basic rulesof theatre etiquette. We were proud toobserve them demonstrating appropriatebehaviour as an audience.

Celebrating ASEAN COMMUNITY

Our school commemorated International FriendshipDay (IFD) from 2 to 6 April. This year, the theme forInternational Friendship Day (IFD) is Celebrating ASEANCOMMUNITY.

The celebration aims to inspire our students to play anactive role in fostering interpersonal skills and toreinforce a sense of togetherness and strengthen ourASEAN identity. Many of our staff and students came toschool adorned in costumes of the different ASEANcountries to demonstrate their appreciation of culturaldiversity and willingness to embrace others fromdiverse backgrounds.

A series of interesting and meaningful buddy activitieswere planned for our students to appreciate thedifferent cultures and traditions of their internationalpeers from different countries.

On 19 April Thursday, the school celebrated Earth Day. It is anannual event celebrated worldwide on 22 April.

Our school advocates the reduction in the use of plastic toprevent further pollution of the environment. Our canteenvendors no longer offer straws to students buying drinks fromthem.

Students learnt how to protect the environment by conservingwater, recycling different types of materials, growing plants ortrees and to be a volunteer for clean-ups. Together, we canmake a difference to the environment by practising the 5Rs –Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Refuse and Repurpose.

P5 Learning Journey-NEWater Visitor Centre

6

The Primary 5 students visited the fifthNEWater Visitor Centre at Bedok, near theSingapore Expo Tanah Merah MRT Station. The visitor centre was awarded the BestEducational Programme at the 20th TourismAwards 2005 and the IWA Marketing &Communication Award in 2006.

Students gained very useful insights on thepurpose of the plant and were captivated bythe fact that the plant is able to produce 50million gallons of NEWater a day.

Students took on the role of NEWaterScientists and explored the visitor centre. They engaged in fun activities and learnabout the three stages of how the waterwas being treated and disinfected.

I have learnt how our water supply is being treated. Water is precious and we

must save water so that we will have enough water to use in future
