• Cathedral of the Risen Christ School is deeply committed to the idea that NO child should be

denied a quality Catholic education based on his or her family’s financial situation.

• With enrollment continuing to grow we are called to be more generous, more giving and

accepting of the call to help make Catholic education available to all who desire it.

• Our in-parish Eagle families pay an average of $1,750 per student. While the cost to educate

each child is $6,250, our parish and supporters help cover the $4,500 difference. Our most

significant source of support comes from individuals and private donors.

• This year, more than ever, due to COVID-19 our families find themselves in financial situations

they didn’t plan on. Our scholarships will provide ON-GOING SUPPORT for these families. We

understand that things change due to jobs and personal reasons, and it is our hope that

through our Friends of Cathedral Scholarship Fund we can help these families.

• YOU can help make an immediate difference and provide a scholarship for a child. From now

until May 28th you can give to Cathedral through Give to Lincoln Day and have your donation

matched by a $500,000 match fund.

1. Donate online at: https://givetolincoln.com/nonprofits/cathedral-of-the-risen-christ-school

2. Check Donations: West Gate Bank, will accept Give to Lincoln Day donations via their drive thru

The first time I saw it, I was very much impressed that the City of St. Louis, to celebrate its status

as “the gateway to the west”, should choose to memorialize this through the use of a giant arch. Modern man has, perhaps, a different understanding of a ‘gate’ – but in ancient times, when heavy

stone walls protected cities, there could be no talk of building a gate without recourse to the

architectural notion of an arch. What we are talking about here is the creation of a gate or portal

through a heavy wall. A wall is an obstacle to entry. It is the gate-way or arch in the wall that

gives access. On Good Shepherd Sunday, last week, we heard Christ proclaim, in the Gospel, that “I am the

gate” to the sheepfold: “whoever enters through me will be saved”. This Sunday’s liturgical

readings marvelously develop this same theme. In our second reading, this Sunday, St. Paul explains salvation in architectural terms. We, “like

living stones,” are to become built into a spiritual dwelling, in which Christ – also, “a living stone”

(the stone, in fact, which the builders rejected) – is constituted “the cornerstone.” Too often we might think of a cornerstone in some purely ceremonial sense, at the corner of a

new building’s entrance, inscribed with the dedication or date of edification. But that is not at all

what the Apostle intends by this metaphor. For ‘cornerstone’ we’d do far better to read ‘cornered-stone’ – or ‘capstone’, as some translations

render it”: for the capstone (or head stone) of an arch-way was not square-edged like all the others,

but rather, was cornered with angled sides – so that the other stones of the arch could rest their

weight into its sides. The capstone of the arch functions as the key to the whole notion of a gateway. The arch can only

hold to the extent that it directs the weight of all the stones into the sides of this central keys-

stone, which holds the arch up (as well as the wall above it). The harder they lean, in fact, the

stronger the arch – for the capstone will never budge. Absent the capstone, though, and all notion

of a gate is gone: gravity ensures a collapse of the stones of the arch and all the stones above it. What this means, in the first place, is that there can be no gateway of entry, without Christ. Jesus

is not some John the Baptist-like figure who merely indicates or announces something apart from

Himself (“make clear a way for the Lord in this world”). He is, in Himself, that way. “No-one

comes to the Father, except through me.” Small wonder, then, that the first name given to our

religion – long before we were known as Christians – was simply “The Way”. In the second place, however, it renders to each of us, also, an important role in granting access

– for an arch consists not simply of a cornerstone. Without the capstone, there is no arch; but the

capstone is not a stand-alone, but acts in concert with the many other stones constituting the

gateway arch. We have an essential role to play in granting others access to heaven. The notion of ‘scandal’ derives from the stone – seemingly small (known as a ‘scandalum’) –

which, overlooked, causes others to stumble. Those, therefore, who overlook Christ as the

cornerstone of the gateway opening heaven – or who consider His uniqueness ‘scandalous’ – will

find in Him a stumbling-block to their life’s journey. We, on the other hand, must also be aware

of how our strength or cohesiveness as heaven’s gateway for others, depends very much on the

degree to which we, ourselves, lean on Christ, as cornerstone. “Going it alone” in the faith will

certainly cause our collapse. Strewn about, thus, on the pathway of others, that would make us,

also, serve as an obstacle or ‘scandalum’ to the faith of others.

Something of a scandal must have presented when, in our first reading, we are told the Greeks

felt slighted by the Jews with respect to the treatment of their respective widows. A marvelous

miracle results from the resolution of this complaint: the development of the sacrament of holy

Orders to include the grade of ‘deacons’ – so that the presbyters of the Church might focus

exclusively on priestly work (prayer and the service of the word). In a few days, your cathedral will be host to Ordination ceremonies in which generous young

souls will become configured to Christ, the High Priest (presbyters), and to Christ, the Servant of

All (deacons). Please continue to pray for them and for those contemplating making over to the

Lord for the whole of their lives this generous gift. Please God, they may always lean on the Lord

and make Him the stable rock of their witness, opening heaven to all. On this, their witness

depends. To speak of the three grades of holy Orders like this, and then also, of the Order of Widows (such

as existed in the early Church), is so important when it comes to the question of our vocation.

Each stone has its proper place in that arch. Every soul is quite unique; for each there is a home

in the Church – it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done. Thus, we are promised in this

Sunday’s Gospel that “in my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” This is so

comforting to know. Sometimes, bereaved families unable to select readings for funerals leave this, rather, to the

discretion of the priest. Whenever that occurs, this Sunday’s Gospel is the one I choose. How

comforting, the notion that the ascending Christ provides those who mourn His departure with

the sure hope that they, too, will follow where He goes! How reassuring, the idea that, since Christ

has promised to come to retrieve us (so that, where He is, we too may be), we are being assured

of our own places in heaven! How touching, the sulking remark of Thomas (still smarting from

Christ’s rebuke for his little faith): “How can we know the way?” How stunning Christ’s reply,

not only that He shows them the way, but that “I am the way”! As we prepare for our Lord’s Ascension in two weeks, we would do well to consider what our

Lord’s entry into heaven with a human nature opens up for the whole human race. In his same

letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul describes it thus: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity

captive.” Christ goes up, as it were, opening (in Himself) a way to the heavens for those with a

human nature, like His – like a new Moses, opening a way through the sea for God’s people to

make safe passage to the other shore of our true homeland. As we celebrate this Sunday the witness of those who made themselves the gateway for our lives

in this world – our mothers – even as we are still unable to resume public worship until tomorrow,

let us not forget Who is our gateway to the next: Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life! “Do

not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.”

Blessed Sunday and Happy Mother’s Day to you all!
