TODAY’S WORKSHOPS

11amHelping your child succeed in the classroom (Tools, Tactics and Being Your Best Advocate) This panel will outline the importance of supporting your child in and out of the classroom setting. They will discuss the need for thorough vision and hearing screens, what sort of developmental and language skills a child needs to have in place to succeed in a classroom setting, how language delays impact ability to do well in a classroom, and how best to help your child at home. This workshop will be inclusive of all families that plan to make it into a traditional classroom setting at some point. Learn how to decide on a therapist for your child, summer activities, strategies for getting your school on board with accommodations, and more.

Experts providing this workshop include local speech and language pathologists from Learning Through Play, as well as learning specialist Heather Bragg (founder of Learning Decoded).

TODAY’S WORKSHOPS

12pmBeyond Traditional Therapies: Alternative Treatments This workshop will include information about lesser-known therapies like Eastern medicine, cranial sacral, biofeedback and more. It will include experts that can speak on traditional Chinese medicine (including herbalism), pediatric craniosacral therapy (a gentle, light touch therapy that is effective in supporting the central nervous system), and biofeedback. Biofeedback can help people learn and change their physical and mental health by improving their mind-body connection while teaching them physical, emotional and cognitive self-regulation skills.

Experts providing this workshop include Dr. David Miller, M.D., L.Ac., Patricia Berg-Drazin, CranioSacral Therapist, RLC, IBCLC, CST and Dr. Eugenie Pabst, Psy.D.

1pmYou’ve Got a Diagnosis. Now what? Receiving the news of a diagnosis for your child can be difficult, confusing, and complicated. Many families struggle to find out what to do next. This workshop will address caregiver’s questions and concerns on their journey to care for and meet their child’s needs. The presenters will talk about the feelings that come with receiving a diagnosis for your child and what it might mean for the entire family. This workshop will also provide a roadmap for what to do next, including 1) Understanding your child’s assessment report and diagnosis, 2) Understanding the recommendations, and 3) Knowing what to look for in service providers. Because we know that each child is different and a one size fits all approach does not work the presenters will respond to the specific questions and concerns you might have.

Sara Anderson has been working with children and families in a wide variety of settings since 2008. She has particular experience with early childhood development, infant assessment, parent-child therapy, and she has also organized and facilitated parent and family education workshops.

Anne Powers is a senior developmental therapist who has worked with young children for more than 20 years. She has extensive specialized training in DIR®/Floortime™, working with children with autism and autism spectrum disorders, global developmental delays, and social-emotional concerns.
