OPEN MICS

I’m always on the hunt for open mics. When I’m
not gigging I still love to meet and hear other
musicians and songwriters. So I search in the
almighty Google and I find this place “The Fez”. I
know I’ve stumble upon it before but I never got
over there. So I made it one of the stops on my
list. A quaint Moroccan restaurant nestled on
what else but Summer Street, Stamford CT! I
love the décor, with the old piano in the window,
the drapes, hung disco balls, strand lights, a
stage with your image mirrored behind you, the
bar that adorns flyers and post cards from other
musical acts and the very friendly pretty bar ten-
der! I was number 5 on the list and with every-
one playing 3 songs; it seemed I was going to be
there a while. However by the time I got a drink
and snack of Hummus with great salsa and
crackers, and settled into my seat, it was al-
ready my turn. There is a house band fronted by
Anthony Quinn and I decided to use Marty the
drummer (who is so chill) on my second and
third tune. My daughter Lily came along and she
even sang a number from “Annie”. It was her
first late night open mic! For 8 years old, that’s
not too bad. The crowd at the fez is very recep-
tive and never an unsupportive listening ear.
Anything goes really, from tracks and rapping, to
singing and one man bands. So if you need a
spot that’s got a vibe that makes you want to
burn some incense, check out “The Fez”. I will
be performing there August 14th at 7pm.

Song Writing Tips
ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT PEOPLE ARE
SAYING, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO EASE DROP. YOU
MAY JUST HEAR A SONG TITLE!!
We each experience life but see it through a different lens. Talk about your story the way you see it.
Someone
once told me
“You will al-
ways have an
audience.”
There are 7
billion people
in the world?!
Make one
listen!
Write when you are exercising, sitting in silence, driving your car.
Write in your mind even if it’s not a song. Words are our great-
est ally. There’s an app for that.
We all need music to survive. How else would we be
able to deal with life’s screw ups? Music heals. Be
a healer.
