T oday we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Once again, we are given images about feeding and nourish- ment. Elijah has had it. He is praying for death in the desert, and then the Angel of God brings him water and hearth cakes. He is refreshed by God’s help and continues on for forty more days. In the Gospel Jesus tells the Jews that he is the Living Bread that has come down from the father. There is no need for the angel now, because we have Jesus. They don’t buy it. They know his father and mother. At least they think they do. Paul’s response to the Living Bread is the most important. He tells the followers to be kind, compassionate, and mutually forgiving. In other words, be imitators of God. Just as Jesus was food for us, we are called to be food for others. We are now in the homestretch as we get ready for school and religious education. We are still in need of catechists for the Religious Educa- tion program. Classes are held on Tuesday eve- nings from 6:30 until 8:00 PM. The classes are held at St. Agnes. If you think you can help us with this ministry, please contact Teri Klopp at 754-0713. Also, final reminders that all children who eventually want to receive the sacraments should be regis- tered for either the school or religious education classes. Some news on projects that are being done in the two parishes. I have included it in both parishes, because with Renew My Church it lets everyone know what is going on at each parish. At St. Kieran work is moving along on a baptismal font to match the altar and ambo. The table was given to us and we used it for the tabernacle stand in the gym during the renovation. In a few weeks it will be added to our furnishings in the church. We also will be having some work done on the tile floor at the back of church. After thirty plus years, the floor has back of church. After thirty plus years, the floor has decided to pop up. It is always something. At St. Agnes we have received conditional approval from the insurance company for plastering and repainting the water damage in the church. The bid for the whole church has come in larger than anticipated so at this time I am postponing the work until after the new year. This will be a big project and I would rather we do it all at the same time. By January we should have the necessary funds for the work. After discussions with the Archdiocese things are subject to change, but right now this is where we stand on the church repairs. Today as I am writing this article we also discovered that one of our classroom ceilings collapsed because of rain. So, another claim went in today and work will begin on Monday. This week the parking lot at St. Agnes was re -striped as well. The striping and the bollards were a gift from the St. Agnes Home and school Associa- tion. Thanks to the Home and School for their work and support for the school and parish. Fr. Tom has begun working with the Women’s Weekend Experience group on the next weekend. Please keep all of those involved in your prayers. The next weekend will take place in the spring and be held at St. Kieran. Thanks Fr. Tom and ladies for all of your help in preparing for it. Finally, please join us as we say good bye to Gene and Mary LaBelle next weekend after the 10:00 AM Mass. Gene and Mary have been a part of the fabric of St. Kieran for most of its existence. They have participated and led many ministries in the parish. They have been a support to me over the time I have been pastor and I know they have shown that same support for all the pastors and priests they have worked with. We will miss them, but they now have a new ministry to tackle. Please join us next Sunday, August 19th to say thank you to Gene and Mary. Other News & Events

Father Edmund Aristil, pastor of St. Emeric in Country Club Hills, is reaching out to our communi-ties to help St. Cecile, a parish in Haiti where his cousin Fr. Etienne is pastor. Fr. Etienne has been requested by his bishop to erect, furnish, and equip the new parish school from scratch. Parishioners from our neighboring parish of St. John in Glenwood will travel to Haiti in September to assist them and bring supplies.

They are requesting the following items: • Lightweight collapsible backpacks (no wheels) • #2 pencils • Small pencil sharpeners • Small erasers • Pocket folders

Haiti was devastated by an earthquake in 2010, and was still not rebuilt when it was struck by Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which destroyed most of southern Haiti. The people of Haiti continue to need assis-tance of all types. If you can donate to help the school being built, please bring your donations to the church and I will get them to St. John Parish. For more information please contact Barbara Dutko at 708-957-3742. Thank you for your support!
