All this past week the Church celebrated Easter. It is too big a celebration for just one day. Throughout the week the readings were all stories of the early church and what they did after the Lord’s Resurrection. Today the Gospel relays the story of the disciples locking themselves in the upper room out of fear. It is a great parallel to our present situation with the Covid-19 virus. We all fear our health, our lives, our livelihoods, and a past that we hold dear. Jesus appears to the disciples in the middle of that fear. He assures them there is a new future ahead for them. The disciples can hardly believe it and Thomas who isn’t present for the appearance says he won’t believe it without proof. There are days I know I wonder what the future will look like after the virus. I question whether we will ever get back to where we were. Sometimes I wonder how we will know when it is time. What will be the proof? Jesus responds to Thomas and offers him physical signs that he is with them. He also tells him blessed will be those who do not see yet believe. I feel he is speaking to all of us today. We don’t have the benefit of Jesus in our midst, but our faith tells us he is here. And the questions we have probably are the wrong questions. I think the most important thing is what good we will bring with us into the new reality of our world. Jesus tells his disciples to put into practice what he had taught them. He tells us the same. Well Easter outside of church will be some- thing we will be remembering for years. Though many of us were alone for the holiday, we still did our best to connect. About forty of my family got together on ZOOM for about 30 minutes. Other people talked about drive by Easters, filled with waves, signs, laughter, and smiles. We all continue to make the best out of a difficult situation. Dorothy Day spoke about community as the greatest relief for depression or darkness. I believe that is still the remedy in our days. When you feel down pick up the phone. You will feel better and the one you call will feel better too. Thanks to Sister Anna Joseph, Sister Mary Grace, and Sister Janice for putting together the great Easter greeting that was on our St. Agnes Web page. Our school and parish staffs are doing many creative things to keep in touch. We miss all of you. Today Fr. O’Mara was the main celebrant for our Sunday Liturgy. We hope that those who do have access to the internet are finding all of the additions to the parish web pages helpful. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who have been able to continue to support our parishes financially. We appreciate your commitment to all we do. Hopefully we can be together for Pentecost. Let’s pray hard and keep our fingers crossed. God Bless and Stay safe. Fr. St. Kieran Catholic Church Second Sunday of Easter

(or Sunday of Divine Mercy) April 19, 2020

“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

— John 20:29b

T oday we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter. All this past week the Church celebrated Easter. It is too big a celebration for just one day. Throughout the week the readings

were all stories of the early church and what they did after the Lord’s Resurrection.

Well Easter outside of church will be some-thing we will be remembering for years. Cardinal Cupich has canceled, suspended, or postponed all church events through the end of May. This means that Religious Education classes have been canceled, and First Communion and Confirmation have been postponed. Parents should review the last three chapters of student textbooks with their children, as it is unlikely that we will make up our last three scheduled classes for the academic year. The Religious Education Office will reach out to affected families as soon as events are rescheduled. Please take this opportunity to strengthen your family’s prayer life. There are many resources online for at-home prayer and worship. If you need help locating these resources, e-mail the R.E. Office at: [email protected]. Please stay healthy and safe.

Notes from Fr. Tom

E very year on the Sunday after Easter the Church gives us the Gospel story of ‘doubting Thomas’ for us to consider. Thomas says that until he actually probes the wounds of Good Friday in the body of Jesus, he would not believe. He had to be assured that the pain that Jesus endured was indeed part of the whole plan and wasn’t some horrible mistake - that there wasn’t some other way to arrive at the glory and life that

Jesus promised without having to risk that pain element. As we all struggle with the fear and anxiety of these times, we are like Thomas in our doubts and concerns. It’s important for us to remember that God doesn’t demand pain as a price for redemption - it’s just part of life. God wants us to believe that His love is stronger than anything we may have to face and endure in our lifetimes that His love will never not be there for us. In the Gospel Jesus offers his disciple the gift of ‘peace’ but that is never meant to be seen as a promise of life without pain or struggle. Only faith can perceive the presence of God in the pains of life – and that kind of faith is what it means to be saved! Especially now we must remember that we are all sent out into the world on a mission - to live in such a way that this world can come to believe what we believe: that our God is truly with us and we need not fear any pain, and struggle, because God is as much God for us on the Good Fridays of our lives as on the Easter Sundays. One author wrote, “Some excitement, some good humor and some good times in the name of the risen Jesus are every bit as important as penance, reflection, study and general seriousness about the meaning of life.” Don’t let these days just slip by - enjoy our faith in the life that Jesus brings to us every day. Let us all continue to be grateful for the many signs of life and hope that are God’s gift to us during this Easter time. Fr. Tom K
