Notes from Fr. John T oday we celebrate the Twenty- ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the first reading the Israelites go to battle Amalek. Moses has Joshua pick out men for the battle and then tells him that he will be standing on the hill holding up his staff. He does this to encourage those who have to go into battle. After a long battle it gets hard to keep his arms up while holding the staff, so Aaron and Hur come and each one holds up one of Moses arms. In the end the Israelites won the battle. So why did they win? I think it was because of encouragement and teamwork. Moses’ encouragement gave the Israelites strength in their battle. Aaron and Hur have made that possible by working with Moses. We see this in families, parishes, and the world; working together and encouraging one another makes for success. We ask God to help us be positive encouraging teammates on the Christian journey. I would like to offer a big thanks to Sr. Linda Gibler for the wonderful presentations on the universe and how God is present in that universe. When we realize that God is in everything, it is harder to treat nature and our planet badly. Linda recited a poem that called out to us from our great-great-great children. The jest of it was, “What did you do when the earth was failing? Surely you did something. What did you do once you knew?” This is a tough question for all of us. Hopefully all of us continue our own personal ways of caring for the earth, and together come up with new ways to save God’s creation. This past week we had our parent meeting for those parents who have children making their First Communion. We talked about what it means to be the Communion. We talked about what it means to be the Body of Christ. The Eucharist not only nourishes us, but it also brings us into a family in Christ. Each week when you come for mass, you will notice children looking for autographs after mass. It isn’t that Fr. O, or Fr. Tom, I, or one of the Deacons is famous, but it is a reminder to all of us and the children that coming together is important to the community and to each of us individually. Please pray for all of our students preparing for First Communion and Confirmation. Next weekend Fr. Tom and I will join Ann Marie and Matt Gornick at Holy Name Cathedral as they receive the Christifidelis Award from Cardinal Cupich. This award is given to individuals or couples who demonstrate faithfulness and dedication in ministry. Ann Marie and Matt have demonstrated that faithful- ness and dedication over the years in both the school and church. School volunteers, Finance Committee and Parish Council members, Recycling leaders, and Coffee Shop connoisseurs would be just a few of the ways Ann Marie and Matt give back to the St. Kieran Community. This week we join together and say thank you to Ann Marie and Matt for all they do for St. Kieran. Don’t forget to put the St. Kieran Halloween party on your calendar. The party will be held on October 28th from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. There will be Trunk or Treat from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM. After that there will be food and activities for everyone in Crawford Hall. If you would like to participate in the Trunk or Treat we ask you to fill out a form so we can save you a parking spot. Candy donations for the night are also being accepted. Parish News & Events

TO ALL OF OUR ST. KIERAN FAMILY When I was growing up all the kids had various chores to do around the house. Some of them included setting the table for dinner, clearing the table after meals, washing and drying the dishes, etc. These chores rotated on a weekly basis. I liked setting the table because it meant I didn't have to wash the dishes! YOUR parish needs your help in setting the Lord's table for our weekend celebration of the Eucharist, the Lord's meal. It's a need we have for the three weekend masses only. We need volunteers to perform the duties of sacristan at mass on Saturday evening and the two masses on Sunday morning. You would be in charge of setting up the gifts (wine, hosts, and water) in the rear of the church for presentation at the offertory and bringing up the wine cups, priest's chalice, and purificators to the table near the altar. All of this should take about 10 minutes and you would only have to do one mass. If we get enough volunteers, we'll set up a schedule so the chore is rotated. Giving the Lord an extra few minutes before mass for all He gives you is not too much to ask! Once we have our volunteers, we'll have a brief meeting to tour the sacristy so you'll know where the various items are like hosts, wine, cruets, and sacred vessels, etc. If you'd like to discuss this ministry further or volunteer to help, please contact Deacon Dave (708-957-3742) or see me after any mass where I'm assisting. SPECIAL NOTE TO MEN OF THE PARISH: YOU CAN HELP TOO!

Remember: Stop giving to the Lord when He stops giving to you! Thank you all and God bless and keep you always. Deacon Dave
