John T oday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. We begin the Scrutinies this week with our Catechumens and Candidates. The Gospel for the first Scrutiny is the “Woman at the Well”. Jesus encounters a woman who has had a number of husbands and is now living with someone who is not her husband. Jesus asks for water and the woman replies that the well is deep, and he doesn’t have a cup. And on top of all that she is a Samaritan. In the end, she comes to believe that he is the Messiah when he tells her anything she has ever done in her life. He then tells her that he will give life giving water to those who ask. Last weekend we took our candidates and catechumens to Holy Name Cathedral for the Rite of Election. They are now on the last weeks in their journey to the Easter Sacraments and the life that comes after. This is important time for them, and also for us. We pray that we will be filled with the same excitement they have as they receive their sacraments and God’s grace. And we pray that we will be an example of Christian living for them as they go forward. We continue to invite everyone to take some time in this season of Lent for prayer and reflection. Please join us for Daily mass on Tuesday- Friday at 8:00 AM at St. Kieran. We also offer evening prayer at both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Evening prayer at St. Agnes is on Wednesday Evening at 6:30 PM. At St. Kieran evening prayer is on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. On Fridays, we have Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM at both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. We also have Stations of the Cross at St. Agnes at 1:30 PM with our school children as well. Take time to join us for these celebrations. Two dates to put on your calendar. The first would be Sunday, April 9th, Palm Sunday. At 2:00 PM we will be celebrating a prayer service with St. Agnes, St. Kieran and St. Irenaeus at St. Irenaeus in Park Forest. By coming together as a community of faith we will continue the renewal the Cardinal has asked for in the Renew My Church initiative. Please join us if you can. The second is the St. Kieran Pasta Dinner that will take place on Sunday April 30th at St. Kieran. More information will be coming on both events, but we want you to put them in your calendars now. See you there. St. Kieran Catholic Church Third Sunday of Lent March 19, 2017 While we were still sinners Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8

Parish Council Meeting: Wednesday - February 22, 2017 Present: Sue Habegger, Fr John, Kevin Deenihan, Joe Sopron Not Present: Keith Betton, Terry Shelley The Parish Council welcomed the presence of concerned parishioners who attended this meeting. Regarding the Pedestrian Overpass across Halsted Street, Father John was unable to find which public entity is responsible for the structure, Chicago Heights and The Illinois Department of Transportation are working that out. The first ValPac advertisement has been designed and ready for distribution. We will monitor the success of this pilot program to determine how we will continue. Father John met with Catholic Charities regarding the relocation of their offices into a portion of our school. While the meeting was encouraging, they have other locations to visit before making a decision. In anticipation of the reconstruction of our church worship space the Parish Council discussed what would be necessary to repurpose our gym as a temporary place of worship. Regarding The Renew my Church initiative, there are two parish clusters in Chicago implementing this plan with the help of an Archdiocesan team. As Renew My Church goes forward over the next few years, the plan developed here will ease future cluster transition into this initiative. The next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for March 22, 2017 - 7:00pm Opening prayer by Sue Habegger. Submitted by: Joe Sopron

March 25:

The International Day, of the

Unborn Child

The International Day of the Unborn Child will be celebrated on Saturday, March 25, on the Feast of the Annunciation. Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, linked the association of this day to the Annunciation as a means to honor Our Blessed Mother, who, by the power of the Holy Spirit, conceived our Lord on this day. This day was first officially celebrated in 1999 in Argentina, and has remained (1) a celebration of the value and dignity of every human person from the moment of conception and (2) a day of remembrance of the unborn children who have been victims of abortion. This day is not an exclusively Catholic or Christian event. All pro-life groups have been welcomed and encouraged to participate in local events or form their own events to celebrate human life. Many churches, pro-life groups, and schools observe this day by prayer (Rosary, Masses, Holy Hours, etc.), by spiritually adopting unborn children, and by processions or prayerful marches. To observe this event in the local community, the Knights of Columbus will host a Rosary Rally after the 10 AM Mass on Sunday, March 26. The Rosary will be dedicated to the Unborn Children—for their welfare and remembrance of the lost. Please join the Knights of Columbus for this special prayer.

Know our Catechumen Edward Funches

“I have picked the Catholic faith because God, family, and friends have called me to this path. They have helped me learn that the Catholic faith is the way to please God.

Another reason I chose this faith is because it has helped me grow spiritually and to become a better person. Without the faith, I only feel half way full, but the church community, Catholic faith and God give me fullness.

Finally I believe God has helped me choose this faith so I can join him in eternal life."
