Helpful Hints from Alyce

Spring has arrived finally, but I am sure the people with allergies are really struggling already. Change is always inevitable; it can drive you crazy or you can embrace it. We will be announcing some of the nomination committee’s candi-dates for Officers for next year, so change is on the way for the Guild as well. It is a great thing to be a part of the Board so if you have thought that you would love to play apart in our great organiza-tion, reach out to Billie Lindgren

and see what is available for you. The reward is great!

Many great things are going on in the next few months. Quilt show season is so awesome, as you get to see the latest and the greatest patterns, techniques and of course FABRIC! Grab some friends and have yourselves a road trip! Sure to be a good time had by all.

You will start to see some changes when you come into the Monthly Meeting. We want it to be more

friendly for everyone instead of walking straight into the sign in line. It is important to Cal-Trans that they know who is in the build-ing so we will continue to make that a priority but be patient with us as we try a few new ideas to continue to make us the best group ever!

Keep sewing! JW

Hard to tell right from wrong or back side of the fabric? Choose the slightly lighter, washed out look or rougher side of the fabric as the back or wrong side.

To avoid rippled edges or sides of the quilt, always measure through the middle from top to bottom and from side to side.

Need a quick template? Try using a cookie cutter. Also, childrens col-oring books are a good source for a child’s quilt.

For more ironing surface, turn the iron board around, using smaller end to hold the iron.

Hopefully Spring will have arrived by the end of April. On the 27th we are going to Hayfork and will be looking for all the spring flowers in bloom. The meeting will be at the Trinity County Fair Grounds on Hwy 3. They have a really large room to use and have plenty of

space for everyone’s opportunity quilt.

All quilts are welcome without reservations, so come on over to Hayfork and enjoy good company as well as the beautiful drive. Lunch will be a salad bar, breads and muffins, as well as drinks and

dessert. Reservations for lunch need to be in by April 20th. They also have door prizes as well as a couple of gifts for everyone. It’s always interesting to see what the small gifts will be at each meeting.

Programs and Speakers At our March meeting we wrapped up the quilt show, an then had awesome presentations by 3 of our own in a member showcase. Thank you to Melissa Milligan, De-laina Watson, and Heather Cham-bers for sharing some of their quilts and stories from the quilting part of their lives. We also had an awesome turn out for the commu-nity service sew day on the follow-ing Saturday. Thanks to all who attended for the gift of your time and talent.

Kim Brownell will be speaking on April 24 with her “Wackydoodle” Trunk Show. Her presentation fol-lows her quilting journey through a variety of different techniques. Sometimes her quilts are realistic, and sometimes they are totally wacky. Her collection is a truly eclectic trek.

There will be another sew day on April 27. This one is a UFO sew day! It can still be community ser-vice … but there might be prizes for UFO progress! If you want to go for a prize, Colleen will take a picture of your very unfinished ob-ject at the beginning of the day. If

you complete it by the June Guild meeting, Colleen will take its “After Picture” and you will be eligible to win a small prize. New members – sew days are free, and all are wel-come! If you need more infor-mation, please ask Eileen or Colleen!

The rundown: April 24: Lecture by Kim Brownell – Wackydoodle Trunk Show

April 27: UFO SEW Day ( Rideout Conference Center 10 am to 4 pm)

May 29: Lecture by Jenny Lyon – Quilting is a contact sport

June 1: Jenny Lyon Workshop – Yes you can Free Motion Quilt (Friday Night Live Building) Eileen has a sample and will be taking signups at the March meeting. If you want to become a better quilter on your home machine, take this class!

June 26: Lecture by Marjan Kluepfel – Creative Expression

July 31: Lecture by Sarah Goer – My Quilting Journey Trunk Show

August 1 (Thursday Workshop) – All About Angles (Friday Night Live

Building) Eileen will be taking sig-nups at the April meeting.

August 23 – 24 Linda Ballard class “Nice and Easy” Eileen will be tak-ing signups.

September 25: Trunk Show by Col-leen Granger – “A Bodacious Trunk Show”

September 28: Workshop – “Rings of Change”

Please be ready to pay the class fee when you sign up. If you end up not being able to participate, there isn’t a refund, but you can try to find someone to take your spot.

Please feel free to contact us if you have ideas for programs or speak-ers or classes, or if you have questions.

Home and Heart Quilt Show ~ Final Report!

For anyone not at the meeting, this is a short report on the quilt show and exit surveys:

First and foremost, there were a lot of people who helped to make the quilt show come

together. A big thank you to all!

I do not have final figures, but between admissions, the opportunity quilt, and the raffle

baskets we netted about $10,800. When all the receipts have been turned in, we will be

able to give a final number. Bottom line, we will be able to pay for speakers next year.

We estimated a paid attendance (guild members who worked aren’t counted) of about

618 people.

On the exit survey, 74% of the people rated the show as excellent, 25% rated the show as

very good, and 1% as good. There were zero poor ratings in any category.

Most common positive comments: Beautiful quilts, free parking, nice layout, friendly at-

mosphere, great vendors, loved the windsocks

Most common suggestions: Need a better sound system, judged quilts with ribbons

should indicate the category in which they were judged, keep the heat down, more out-

side signage, and let us vote for 3 quilts for viewer’s choice.

Congratulations to our viewers choice awards winners!

1st place Karen Litvinchuk

2nd place Karen Litvinchuk

3rd place Patt Thompson

4th place Colleen Pelfrey

5th place Linda Matsumoto

A big thank to Kathy O’Donnell for being featured quilter for 2019.

A big congratulations to Karen Litvinchuk who will be featured quilter for 2020!

If you haven’t heard, next year’s quilt show chair will be Jennifer Walton, and the theme will

be “Journeys - Not all who wander are lost”. Be thinking about your own journeys,

quilting or life, and how maybe you can reflect that in a quilt for next year’s show.

The motion was made (Colleen) and seconded (Eileen) to accept the minutes as written. A unanimous vote followed.

Unfinished Business:

General Quilt Show wrap-up to Board:

Colleen repeated what was stated at the March General meeting. Please refer to her wrap up in the news-letter for detailed information.

Buddy System:

There was discussion about the importance of making new people feel welcome. In addition, there were ide-as presented on how all members could get connected with other members. Some of the suggestions will be implemented in future meetings.

There was also a need expressed to figure out how to have the sign-in sheet positioned in a location that did not cause a traffic jam in the doorway to the meeting room.

Nominating Committee:

Billie Lindgren, Helen Sousa and Gail Gilmore comprise the committee. They continue to contact members about holding positions in the coming year. More information will be announced at April meeting.

New Business:

Yuba/Sutter Fair:

As we go Hip-Hopping into the month of April, remember its Easter Bunny time. This means it’s time for coloring eggs with bright colors to fill all those baskets. It’s always so much fun to dye eggs!

With left-over dye solution, try

putting a few pieces of fabric into the containers and swish them around. After removing the fabric, put it into a bath of salt (1T) and water (2C) and let it set for about 15 minutes. Rinse in plain water until it runs clear. Repeat if

necessary.

And for a bit of info – John Greenough received the fir patent in 1842 for a sewing machine.

Happy Quilting! Alyce and Dorothy
