Dear Beach Parents.

It’s crazy to think that we just completed our first quarter and are heading full steam into our second quarter courses. We celebrated many successes this first quarter and I am proud of our students and staff. The winter season brings many changes ahead. Our extracurric-ular activities have changed to Winter Sports, Science Olympiad, Leadership, Drama, Math Club, Fiddle Club and WEB and they are hitting the ground running.

Again, one of my goals this year has been to place an emphasis on communication with our BMS family. You can stay up to date with the latest news from Beach Middle School by subscribing to our BMS Instagram at BMS_Bulldogs, follow us on Twitter at http;//www.twitter.com/BeachMiddle and also on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BeachMiddle. I hope you are enjoying our new “Week Ahead” format. You will receive daily announcements and up-dates to the great things happening at Beach. I want to thank you for your support of all things “Beach”. The turnouts for conferences, athletic attendance and music events has been wonderful. Thank you for all that you do.

It is an honor to serve as Principal at Beach Middle. Have a safe and restful holiday break.

With much enthusiasm, Nick Angel

BMS ATHLETICS Congrats again to our fall teams (volleyball, cross country, football, and field hockey) on great seasons. The winter season is underway as the boys’ basketball teams played their first games on November 13th. Even better, all four teams picked up a win! Our co-ed swim team begans practice on Novem-ber 18th. Please remember we must have a current physical on file in order to participate. Contact Coach Brinklow if you have any specific questions. The middle school wrestlers will begin their voluntary workouts this month. Optional pre-season workouts are availa-ble for all wrestlers not partici-pating in basketball at the WSEC from 3:30-5:00 PM. Coach Slusser will be communicating these dates soon. Their official season starts after the holiday break. Girls’ basketball will also begin following the holiday break

Notes from the Counseling Department

The end of the quarter can be a stressful time for our students as missing work can snowball if left unresolved until the last minute. Please take a moment to ensure your child is caught up with their assignments and has the grades needed for a successful end to their trimester. With the holidays quickly approach it is good to keep in mind that some of our students may have strong emotional reactions to this time of year. Loss hits people especially hard during the holidays so please look out for students that may need an extra bit of love and support as we near these special days. Please encourage your child to see us in the counseling office if they need anything. No problem is too small. Thank you and Happy Holidays! If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Lombardo (X 2303), Mr. Strzyzewski (X 2013), Mrs. Kelly (ext. 2015) or Mrs. Tal-arico (X 2016 AM only) at 433-2202.

BOX TOPS FOR

EDUCATION

With the holidays coming up and the many trips to the grocery store that will incur, please consider saving your Box Tops for our Beach Middle School January Box Top for Education Fundraiser. The class, in each grade level, that col-lects the most Box Tops wins a piz-za party for the classroom.

The money that is collected goes towards classroom and student enrichment.

We appreciate your taking the extra time to collect the Box Tops.

LEADERSHIP CLASS

During the 1st quarter, Leadership students began by sur-veying the entire student body to ask what would they most like for the school. The winner was a per-manent outdoor volleyball area. Many Beach students purchased goodies at our bake sales at the end of September. The Haunted Hallway and Dance the week be-fore Halloween was a huge suc-cess, and all told Leadership

earned over $1500 in the first quarter alone! Our 2nd quarter Leader-ship students are off and running and making plans to focus primar-ily on fun for the students. We'll be holding Staff vs. Student Mi-nute-to-Win-It Challenges during all 3 lunches on Friday November 22. Students wishing to participate purchased 25-cent lottery tickets for the chance to compete in games like Cheeto Toss, Wrap-ping Paper Mayhem, and eating doughnuts off a string. Additional-ly, Leadership will hold a Movie Night, showing the highest vote getter, Home Alone, on Thursday, December 12, from 3-5pm. Ad-mission price is $2, and snacks will also be available for pur-chase. Finally, the students will host a holiday Spirit Week, with special dress up days and lunch events. Additionally, Leadership students will be collecting Toys for Tots this holiday season to send to Faith in Action for wrap-ping and distribution.

Student Opportunities At Beach

Beach Family,

We are excited to announce an

enhancement to your student's learning

here at Beach: House Advisory Time.

This is a 30-minute block, once every

two weeks on Thursdays. During this

time, your student will be in a careful-

ly selected group of approximately 15

-16 students from 6th through 8th

grade. The teacher in charge of each

"House" will be delivering lessons cre-

ated by the staff that address compe-

tencies from the Portrait of a Gradu-

ate.

This endeavor was started last

May, and has taken over a half a year

to plan, practice, and implement. All

of the educators at Beach are passion-

ate about this effort, and all see a great

need for social/emotional education to

complement the great academic learn-

ing already taking place. We are excit-

ed to further develop connections with

small cohorts of students.

If you are curious what com-

petencies will be covered, please refer-

ence the Chelsea School District Por-

trait of a Graduate below. If you have

any questions, please don't hesitate to

contact the office.

Thank you, and we look for-

ward to starting our House Advisory

time in January!

2019 Spelling Bee

During the last weeks of October, all Beach students had the opportunity to take writ-ten spelling bee quizzes in their English Lan-guage Arts classes. The top spellers from these quizzes participated in grade level bees in the Beach Media Center. There, the field was nar-rowed to 5 spellers per grade level. While some

shuffling was done due to students who could not at-tend the SEMMLAA finals, 14 top spellers ended up representing Beach at Milan Middle School on Satur-day, November 9th. Our 6th graders were Ava O'Bri-en, Keenan Basar, Ronan King, Lisa Krueger, and Emma Woodard. Four of our 6th graders landed in the top 10, and Ronan and Lisa took first second place! Our 7th grade spellers were Lauren Thompson (who took 7th place!), Luke Mourad, Ben Teten, and Doug Beechey. Finally, our 8th grade spellers were Anna Carter (who took 10th place!), Ryan Frederick-sen, Emily Romanowski, Xavier Navin, and Sara Martin.

They all made us proud and seemed to have a good time, too. Way to go spellers for representing Beach so well!

Chelsea Education Foundation makes $10,000 donation to Beach

outdoor learning space.

By Crystal Hayduk

The Chelsea School District Board of Education voted to approve a donation of $10,000 from the Chelsea Education Foundation to support an out-door learning space at Beach Middle School. Lynn Fox, president of the CEF, made the presentation to Nick Angel, middle school principal, at the board meeting on November 11. Ms. Fox said the funds were donated to CEF by the Mansfield Family Foundation of East Lansing so that the middle school can continue its design challenge efforts to construct an outdoor classroom space. Mr. Angel said the Mansfield Family Foundation sought the opportunity to support Beach Middle School because of the innovative educational pro-gramming, and he is thrilled to accept the donation with the board’s approval. “We’re ready to get to work,” Mr. Angel said.

Summer reading contest winner, Joshua Gregor, joins Senator Theis in Lansing.

On Tuesday, November 5, Joshua Gregory, of Manchester, and his mother,

Michelle, joined Senator Theis in Lansing as he served as a “Senator for a Day” for winning my summer reading contest. Joshua is a sixth-grade student at Beach Middle School in Chelsea, and he won the contest by reading five books, which in-cluded The Keepers by Ted Sanders and Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Chil-

dren by Ransom Riggs, among others.

Joshua was able to join Senator Theis in Lansing for most of the day and was able to attend Senate session and a committee hearing with me. The ‘Be a Senator for a Day’ summer reading contest is a great way to help keep students engaged in

learning during their summer break. Senator Theis stated “It was great to have Joshua serve with me as my junior senator, and I encourage him to keep up the

good work at school”.

CHOIR

If your child sold wreaths, first of all, thank you for support-ing your child and our choirs! Our choir budget only goes so far and the Sale enables us to continue to buy music at the end of the year when our budget has been deplet-ed. We also use the sale proceeds to subsidize any field trips, and buy fun things for our room like last year's Karaoke Machine, and from two years ago, stability cushions for alternative seating during rehearsals. Wreath Delivery is on Wednesday, December 4th. The truck arrives at BMS around 1-1:30 p.m. We need parents to help unload and organize the orders in the cafeteria in addition to signing up after school to help students pick their orders so they can promptly deliver them. Please look for an email from Ms. Miller asking for volunteers to help on Wednesday, December 4. 7th & 8th Grade Choir families, please mark your calen-dars for Friday evening, Decem-ber 6. Students will volunteer to sign up to Christmas Carol at the

Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting in Pierce Park and to help wel-come Santa to Chelsea!! Please encourage your child to sign up. It's super fun and lasts only about 30-45 minutes. We will meet at the Pierce Park pavilion at 5:45 p.m. and park in the hospital parking lot. To make it even more special and fun for our singers, we will be asking parents to sign up to bring a large container Hot Chocolate, cups, and mini-marshmallows. Please look for the sign-up and dress warmly!

Last, we're looking forward to a festive evening, ringing in the Holidays and spreading cheer at our Winter Concert on Thursday evening, December 12, at 7 p.m. in the CHS auditorium. 6th-8th grade students will meet in the HS or-chestra room at 6:30 p.m. For this concert, students may wear "Festive Hats" in addition to our regular choir attire. However, please no hats that cover the face or have noise-makers or lights. Thank you. Enjoy the Season. See you all at the concert on Thursday, December 12!

The flu season is upon us. The school

is looking for donations of tissues. If you are willing to donate a box or two, please bring it to the office. Thank you for

your support!

CHS Class of 2024 Band Members and Families

CHS Marching Band Camp

August 3-8, 2020

The Chelsea High School Bands are excited to welcome the Class of 2024 our cur-rent 8th Grade Band Members and their fami-lies!

Plans are already underway for the 2020-2021 Chelsea High School Bands. Marching Band Camp is scheduled to take place the week of August 3-8, 2019. We will meet all new members on Saturday August 1 for an orientation day, begin camp with the full Band on Aug. 3, and end the week with our annual car wash fundraiser scheduled to take place on Saturday August 9, 2020. There shouldn’t be any school conflicts with these dates, as all other fall sport seasons are scheduled to start after band camp. If anyone has questions or concerns regarding band camp please contact Mr. Catherman at [email protected], or by phone at 433-2201 ext. 1404.

The color guard and drum line will begin preparations later this spring, with clinics/rehearsals taking place in May and early-June. Summer rehearsals for both the percussion/drum line and color guard are tentatively sched-uled for July 27-31, 2020.

All high school band members will receive detailed information as each event nears this spring, and will receive a mailing this sum-mer with detailed information including a schedule for band camp. The 2020 Bulldog Marching Band will plan our premier perfor-mances in the Chelsea Fair Parade and our first home football game in August. Additional per-formance dates will be issued as soon as the calendar is finalized this next spring.

Please visit the Chelsea H.S. Bands web-page by going to www.chelsea.k12.mi.us, then selecting “Chelsea High School”, “Music”, and then Mr. Catherman’s name. This page will be updated periodically this winter and spring with rehearsal and performance dates. You can also follow the Chelsea Bands on Twitter @ChelseaHSbands.

ART

Art classes at Beach are in design mode this year with lots of opportunities to use and develop their creative and critical thinking skills. Sixth graders are having a blast learning about the color wheel and de-signing line Mandala's on their iPad. They are also enjoying making very unique and crea-tive bobble heads out of clay. Seventh graders are very busy with drawing. They are introduced to several tech-niques to help them "draw what they SEE, rather than what they THINK they see". They are working with nature drawing, portrait drawing, and perspective drawing while working with ink, watercolor, acrylic paint and clay and glaze for their pro-jects. They are using the design process as they learn about Native American art and create their own totems or dream catchers out of clay. The eighth grade has a focus of bringing their art out into the hallway. De-pending on the time of year, you may see these students creating chalk art outside the school or tape art on the walls of the school. The whole class has a mural they are creating in the art hall where each student is painting their own design on a leaf of a tree. They are also beginning to be involved in a hunger awareness project designing bowls and food art out of clay. Through these two projects they will be helping fight hunger in our community and globally while working along with the Chelsea community.

BMS INTERNATIONAL

CLUB

The BMS International Club has gotten off to an exciting start with the club's attendance at Global Festival at Michigan State University earlier in November. We are excited to use what we have learned and experienced at the festival to create opportunities for all students at Beach Middle School. For those that are not fa-miliar with the club, it is for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students interest-ed in exploring world cultures and traditions from countries around the globe. If you are interested in traveling, come to our club and we will have international experiences that will appeal to you. Members of the club can expect to cook, create, and participate in fun, culturally-focused activities. What we do depends largely on student interest. It is not too late to join!

Please ask Profe Bertoni for more information. Hope to see you there! ¡Hasta la vista! À bientôt!

SRSLY is partnering with Project Success to visit lunches at Beach every first Monday

of the month to share statistics and treats. December's stat is: 85% of students say their

parents give them lots of chances to do fun things with them (MiPHY 2018). Family

bonding is one way to reduce a student's likelihood of using substances. Learn more

about this statistic and other data at srslychelsea.org.
