How to Research a Company Before the Interview*

You need to spend some time planning to conduct your job search. You’ve been lucky enough to get an interview. It could be a phone-screening interview (have notes on questions to ask and get dressed-no PJ’s-and smile when you talk). Or, you could be going to the actual organization for your interview. Though time may be limited for you because of all that’s on your plate, you still have to research the organization:

1. Go the their website and check out their mission statement, history, people they serve and write the information down.

2. See what you can find on social media: posts, news, Facebook, LinkedIn. Perhaps you’re connected or know someone.

3. Do Google searches as well as looking at Google News - any information you can find about the organization will help you.

4. Go to Glassdoor to check other feedback about the company. There are sometimes interview questions and reviews.

5. Research the person that will be interviewing you if you can. 6. Tell the interviewer you’ve researched their agency or organization.

Finally the interview begins the second you enter the room! Each person you encounter or who greets you will form an opinion of you. Smile, give a firm (not bone-crunching) handshake and look the person in the eye. Be your best self.
