HAHA Luncheon: Healthy Aging Humorous Aging

One hundred thirty five members and guests attended the Acade-my’s Lunch & Laugh & Learn with Joel Goodman on May 12 at the Holiday Inn. Joel’s presentation had us all laughing and thinking about humor in our lives. Here are some jests he shared:

Humor can help you disagree without being disagreeable.

A smile is the shortest distance between two people.

You can tickle stress before it

tackles you as you move from “grim & bear it” to “grin & share it” in dealing with leadership challenges.

Nothing is quite as funny as the unintended humor of reali-ty.

Nurture your sense of humor: take your roles in life seriously and yourself lightly.

Seven days without laughter makes one weak.

NOTES FROM

THE

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Thank you to everyone who shopped at Barnes and Noble May 6. Saw many familiar faces, added a few possible new members and one possible new leader. We received a check for $493 which is 10 percent of items purchased with our vouch-ers. It is an easy and effective outreach for A.L.L.

Thank you to volunteers Susan Coveney, Carolee DeBlaere, Scheryl LoMonico, Bailey Bloom, Louise Young, Lou and Judy Tirelli, and Judi Ash. We don't exist without our volunteers.

Discovering AMAZING ME

STUDY GROUP REVIEW

Submitted by Academy Member Rose Farr, Class Participant

Our Life Path of Discovery; Healing – it is Not just Physical; Peace that Passes Understanding – how?; LOVE CONQUERS ALL ~ Minus the Con-ditions!; Humor ~ Heals and Attracts; The Mind–Heart Link ~ a gentler expression packed with power; Communication is the Key; Synthetic Im-age vs. True Self

Above are the 8 Topics for this Spring 2017

study group, which has shown us how to exam-

ine life patterns (both healthy & unhealthy) that

have dictated our life-long decisions and rela-

tionships. Current choices take on a new clarity

and dimen-

sion. The

“rolls” we find

ourselves in

and long be-

lieved are set

in stone, are

discussed in

detail, bring-

ing new pos-

sibilities to

mind. We now understand the power available

to us that we never really thought about or at-

tempted to access.

Study Group Leader Barbara Weatherwax offers

true stories and examples of the Topics to en-

gage the participants. She uses humor to help

the participants to enjoy the Topics and leads

the participants to share life experiences of

their own. We also learned skills to change the

negatives into positives during an interesting,

uplifting, enjoyable and exciting course. This

course helps us to realize that our Life is de-

signed to serve us, it’s Truly Amazing and at

our core, so are We!

Spoiler Alert! Look for the all new Discovering Amazing Me - 8 New Topics, scheduled for

Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. in The Academy’s fall

2017 semester!

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

There was no shortage of thank-you’s going around at the

annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Friday, April 28 at

Longfellows! In fact, it was so well attended that the restau-

rant staff had to scramble minutes before the event started to

set up more place settings! Our volunteers who work tirelessly

all year as study group leaders, on committees and in the of-

fice enjoyed a lovely luncheon and each other’s company.

Special thanks, we know, goes to a mystery donor for making

this luncheon possible! Mystery Donor, we appreciate you!

Thanks and good wishes were expressed by many that day

for your generosity. Thanks, also to Mary Caroline Powers, Em-

pire State College Vice President for Communications and

Government Relations and Sue McFadden, Empire State Col-

lege Liaison for joining us that day!
