On the Wednesday before last year’s Nut Race, Columbia got around 15 inches of snow on top of an existing couple of inches, and then the

temperature dropped into the low single digits. We had another inch of snow early Saturday morning that left the already loaded road quite slippery. This year was vastly different with no snow and 41 degrees. Maybe we should call it the Nice Race if Mother Nature continues in this vein next year. In any case, 43 people signed up, and 42 finished. The overall female winner was Katie Hauser (18:17), and the overall male winner was Christian Reed (16:29). Each won a very large bag of peanut M&Ms. In fact, all first, second, and third place awards this year consisted of various package sizes and varieties of M&Ms. Everyone else got a consolation prize of a packet of peanuts. March is here, which means the annual St. Pat’s 5K is not far away. This year the race falls on the actual St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), so it should really be festive and fun! Be sure to don shamrocks and your green racing flats, and head downtown on Saturday morning, March

17, to race on a fast but challenging course. This is typically the largest race of the year and the proceeds go toward our summer youth track program and other youth events held throughout the year. If you are looking for something to do on the March 16, we can always use a few volunteers to assist with packet pick-up and registration. It is a lot of fun and the time flies due to the all the activity. There are lots of other opportunities, volunteering and running, to get more involved in CTC. I would like to report that on Saturday, February 11, ten members traveled to St. Louis to represent the Columbia Track Club at the USA Cross Country National Championships. The 8K race was run in Forest Park on a challenging course. Although the

weather was far from agreeable, 17 degrees with a wind chill near 0 at race time, everyone greatly enjoyed the experience and the camaraderie that comes with traveling and competing as a team. This was also a great opportunity to participate in a well organized national event, with high caliber talent, and to interact with runners from all over the United States. There are several other USATF club competitions held throughout the year that allow CTC members to compete on the national level. This year we are very fortunate two other events, the masters’ outdoor track and field and club cross country championships, will be held within a day’s drive of Columbia. In closing, I want to congratulate board member Nancy Taube for winning her age group at the National Cross Country Championship. Go Nancy! See you on the starting line! Bill Stolz

February 22, 1987 —Columbia Regional Hospital 5-Mile Run, which 3 years later became the St. Pat’s 5K: 1. Steve S-F, 25:17 2. Jim Heady 26:12, 3. Kent Lang 26:23 . . . Phil’s performance, at age 33, is notable for what it wasn’t, than for what it was. On the same course, today, at age 58, he would run some 8 minutes faster, having, in his 50s, set many age records, notably in HOA. Margaret Smith-Shimkus led the female runners at 30:11, followed by Debbie Hoxworth, 32:30 and Milene Mittelhauser, 33:05. Others: Angela Hessler, 13, 35:45, Amy Hessler, 38:28, Nancy Fritsch 42:31, Darlene Londeree 50:36, and, the irrepressible Boots Gerhardt, age 66, 48:59, ahead of 152 other women. A total of 731 runners.

In the February, 1987 newsletter Dick Hessler announced the start of the third annual season of practice and competition for the CTC Colts. Dick founded and nurtured this mainstay facet of what CTC is all about and, today, continues as leader and coach.

Serial Competition Update Recent comments have implied there is some confusion about what is measured for the serial competition. Simply put, your points are assigned based on the winner’s time divided by yours. That means you get 100 if you’re the fastest male or female, and the points for everyone else are assigned according to how they compared to the winners. To demonstrate some of the features of the serial competition, Hugh Emerson has made up a runner whose pace is consistently around 10 minutes per mile. Here is a table of her races, times and serial competition points in 2011:

Just to round out the year, let’s say she volunteered at the other three races in the serial competition: the Heart of America Marathon, the Rock Bridge Revenge, and the Cheese and Sauerkraut 10 miler. Note that her pace remained constant but her points varied widely; that’s because the standard against which she was measured (the winning female time) varied from race to race. The winning pace for the huge St. Patrick’s Day 5K was a lot faster than the winning pace for the smaller Nut Race 5K. Our hypothetical runner earned a total of 706 points for her efforts for the year. That would’ve been enough for sixth place: a framed certificate, a special t-shirt, and a $35 gift certificate from Tryathletics! So what do you say, 10-minute-mile folks, how about

making a new year’s resolution to run at least 10 serial

competition races in 2012?

CTC recently received the following notes from Boots Gerhardt, who is among CTC’s oldest living members. She was born on May 29, 1920. Happy 2012 to all my friends and buddies on the Track Club. I enjoy reading the schedule even if I can't be there to participate. I have a large apartment, on the southwest side of Topeka — can look east over semi-wooded land with wild turkeys even sometimes. I walk down the hall to the dining room, post office, game-rooms, etc. but can cook in my microwave, when I choose to do so. I ski too, but not since my knee replacement about 5 years ago. I counted the residents — we have 18 men and 40 women — on Nov. 24th. Guess the wars killed off more men, no doubt. Robert, my dear husband, died in 1987 of pancreatic cancer — the results of his having been exposed to toxic sprays in the S.W. Pacific in World War II. We met after his return; married January 17, 1946. I was an Ensign(Nurse Corps) USNR before marriage, graduate of Evanston Hospital (Northwestern Univ). My name “Elizabeth” I could not pronounce. I said “Iddy boots” as a toddler. The R and L letters were difficult. I miss all my good friends in Columbia, but I know at my age I should live near one of my children. Our daughter, Linda and hubby Jim A. McHenry live here. She’s a financial planner and stock broker. Our son, Kurt D. Gerhardt, lives near Grand Rapids, Michigan. They've all been competitive swimmers. Come see me sometime. Phone: 785-272-0842 And a follow-up from Joe Duncan: Boots was certainly an interesting person. She and Bob join CTC in the early ’80s, when both of them were over age 60 and quickly became fixtures at most races. Boots established most of the 60-69 female CTC records, while Bob had many of the male 60-69 marks. There were very few 60+ runners then. Boots loved to dance. After most of her Saturday morning races, she and Bob would go dancing in the evening. Boots continued her dancing after Bob’s passing. Bob died on February 15, 1987 after a rapid onslaught of pancreatic cancer. Then, just a week later, February 22, Boots ran in the CRH 5-mile race, a time of 48:59, at age 66, one of only two 60+ women. After Bob died Boots stayed in Columbia for a few more years then went to Topeka to be with her daughter. he did come back for a few more races. It appears Boots’ last CTC race was the Human Race in May, 2003. She was 82. She held all the age 70-79 records for several years, and still has all the 80+ records. She was the first, and to date the only, 80+ CTC member to consistently participate in CTC events. But now, Barney Sword makes his 80+ debut in the First Night 5k. I fully expect him to continue as a consistent participant.
