Sheep farmers could soon have access to newer, tastier saltbush varieties, to help improve returns on their less

productive, saline land.

The Future Farm Industries CRC and the CSIRO were trialing 12 genotypes and has them growing at 15 trial sites

across Australia, including Anameka Farms in Tammin.

The lines were originally selected in 2001 from seed collected from native stands of old man saltbush, with the

aim to find lines that were tastier, more easily digested and produced greater biomass.

CSIRO scientist Hayley Norman has been working on the project.

She said improving the digestibility of saltbush for sheep by just 10 per cent, could be three times more profitable

than increasing biomass production.

“This was according to whole farm economic modeling, based on the WA central Wheatbelt,” Hayley Norman said.

“We’ve now undertaken four years of field grazing, pen feeding and lab experiments using sheep grazed on these

trial sites to determine just how palatable and digestible these new saltbush lines are.

“To our surprise, sheep grazing on the sites showed similar likes and dislikes.

“From this information we’ve been able to choose the best eight genotypes and are about to feed them to sheep to

confirm the digestibility figures.

“Using all this information, we will choose several genotypes for commercial release next year.”

Natural resource management group Wheatbelt NRM has been working closely with the Future Farm Industries

CRC to help farmers make the best use of saltbush, with the help of funding from the Australian government’s

Caring for our Country program.

The group’s project manager Georgie Troup said software was now available to farmers, giving them advice on

what to do with saline land.

She said 23 farmers had already accessed the online resource.

“Australia’s leading agricultural advisors have developed a brilliant resource called Saltland Genie which offers

specific salt land solutions,” Georgie Troup said.

“It includes economic modeling, local case studies and all the information you need to gain productivity from your

site.”

Bencubbin farmer Rob Grylls has been involved in the project using Saltland Genie.

Some of the software program’s recommendations for his sites included mixed saltbush plantings with inter-row,

medic pasture.

“I think it is a useful tool to research what best to grow in different situations,” Rob Grylls said.

“We used the program to work out what shrubs, perennial grasses and pastures to grow on different sites

depending on the severity of salinity and its position in the landscape.”

Rob Grylls said he used the information to plant out two five-hectare sites, which will eventually be used to run

sheep this Autumn.

The software can be found at www.saltlandgenie.org.au

Growers’ decision sought about future of skeleton weed funding Grain and hay producers who fund the Skeleton Weed Control Program are being encouraged to contribute to decisions

about the future of the program.

Grains, Seeds and Hay Industry Funding Scheme Committee chair Barry Large said funding arrangements to control future skeleton weed threats were being reviewed in consultation with producers.

“Industry Funding Schemes, under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007, aim to help industry fight

biosecurity threats which impact on their sector but are not covered under national arrangements,” Mr Large said.

“The Grains, Seeds and Hay Industry Funding Scheme, which came into effect in 2010, puts the State’s farmers in control of determining which established pests and diseases to address, and provided a fundraising mechanism.

“Grain growers have provided funding for the Skeleton Weed Control Program since 1975, and the contribution of 30

cents for every tonne of grain they sell has not increased since 2001.”

Under the Grains, Seeds and Hay Industry Funding Scheme, producers pay a 30 cent contribution on the first sale of every tonne of grain and seed and 15 cents per tonne on the first sale of every tonne of hay to fund programs to control

skeleton weed and eradicate bedstraw.

Mr Large said since 2001, the number of known skeleton weed-infested properties had grown from 620 to 935, but the program had become more focused and efficient, with landholders taking on more of the responsibility for managing

infestations and surveil lance.

“Recent budget pressures resulting from the growing number of skeleton weed-infested properties, a requirement to fund bedstraw eradication, and increased expenditure for control have led to a need for the program to be reviewed,” he

said.

“Growers are being asked to consider a number of alternatives to the current skeleton weed program and register their preference via an online survey.

“One option is to raise the contribution rate to 40 cents per tonne to cover projected increased expenditure based on

inflation and the continuing rise in the number of infested properties.

“A second possibil ity is to maintain the 30 cents per tonne contribution but decrease expenditure through reduced surveil lance and reduced spending in high-prevalence areas, but continue research and local group support outside high

prevalence areas.

“A final scenario is the closure of the coordinated Skeleton Weed Control Program.”

To complete the survey and have a say in the future direction of the Skeleton Weed Program, growers should complete the online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Skeleton_Weed

The survey is open until 23 August 2013.

The current Grains, Seeds and Hay Industry Funding Scheme and opt-out conditions will remain in place until a clear

future direction emerges.

On the 20th of July the KKFC juniors played Corrigin in Corrigin. The game was intense and a little congested. Players from both sides were fighting hard for the ball but in the end Corrigin prevailed. Congratulations to Dylan

SENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORS

Last week the Blue Boys came up against what was expected to be an unpredictable Corrigin side given their 100 year celebrations. The game didn’t start well with Johnny Bowey blowing out a calf running onto the ground, before

deciding it was time to change into jeans and a jacket once the rain started in the second quarter. Things improved when Dylan Bunworth jailed a goal on the run, showing what was a miraculous recovery from having his foot run

over by his mum the week previous. Our boys managed to run out comfortable winners. Award WinnersAward WinnersAward WinnersAward Winners 4Farmers Kondinin Matt Myles

The League game was a real pressure cooker with both sides making accurate disposal for the other side very difficult. Inaccurate kicking at goal meant both sides never capitalised on the hard work done down back. The final

Saturday was not the best of days for the C Grade to be out playing hockey. With it raining for most of the game, the kids fought on. The rain continued for some of the B Grade game but that didn’t deter the players from playing

a great game that had them drawing nil all with Lake Grace. With the rain gone it was A Grades turn to take on Lake Grace. The girls once again played a great game but finally had a deserving win of 3 nil.
