were the .To see our dancers perform, to see and hear the choir sing and perform the songs and to watch students perform in their individual items was a privilege to see. The aerialists were show stopping! A special mention goes to Jack V-E for his wonderful individual singing performances. Congratulations go to the amazing teachers who are the driving forces behind Star Struck. The producers, the creative and musical directors, the choir conductor, the dance choreographers are all teachers in all the schools. These amazing people are supported by other teachers and staff who play in the orchestra, design and make the props, train the technical crew etc. etc. Once again, a huge thank you to all our teachers and staff who have been involved with Star Struck. We would not be able to be part of it without your support. A special ‘thank you’ to the parents and others who brought in ‘food’ for the students and staff, particularly on Saturday evening, as well as those who helped with supporting the students, in between items. The coffees were also enjoyed. All this support was very much appreciated.

Farewell Mrs Matthews Today we say farewell to our school chaplain, Mrs Matthews. Fiona has been part of the staff at Hamilton South Public School for the past eight years. Fiona has been a wonderful support to students, families and staff during this time. Fiona has created many art works with groups of students that are proudly displayed around the school. We thank Fiona for all the wonderful contributions she has made to Hamilton South PS and wish her all the very best and look forward to watching the new and interesting artworks she creates in the future.

NSW PSSA Girls Basketball Hamilton South PS would like to wish three female Stage 3 students (Taylah M, Sarah D and Rose B) the very best of luck as they attend the NSW PSSA Girls Basketball Championships this week. The girls will be representing the Hunter Region at the championships which take place at Albury, NSW. Here, the girls will be able to showcase their amazing basketball skills against the state’s best. All the best girls!

Winter Solstice Breakfast

From 8am Wednesday 19 June, our school canteen will be holding our Winter Solstice Breakfast. This has become a tradition at Hamilton South PS. The breakfast celebrates those additional precious seconds of daylight. A flyer with the menu was sent home last week. On the menu are: hash browns, egg & bacon rolls (including gluten free rolls), vegetable frittata, warm porridge, hot chocolate and great coffee. It would be great to see lots of people in attendance as it is a good way to get together to catch up with other families. Helping with the breakfast If you can help out in the canteen during the morning, please contact Mary on 0412451226. We need 8 more helpers in the canteen from 7.45am.

Breakfast Entertainment We will be having a number of performances from our school band during breakfast. We have students in a number of different bands and it will be great to hear them perform to a wider audience.

At the breakfast we will have a ‘special guest appearance’ from our Trivia Master Grant who will be interviewing students and others about trivia questions. This will be a good way to promote the P&C Trivia Night. If you haven’t booked a table yet there are still tables available. Getting together as parents of a particular year/grade/group, booking a table is a good way to get to know other parents. Sue Estens Principal

Star Struck 2019 ‘No Limits’ Dance Group This year truly has been one of the most fantastic Star Struck experiences yet. What a week we have just had! The 48 students in the dance group have been absolutely incredible. Their enthusiasm, focus, attention to detail, creativity and respect for the show have been a pleasure to be a part of. It is always amazing to see how much they gain from the experience and to watch them shine in what may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am very proud of their efforts and grateful for the respect I received both as their teacher and as a choreographer of the show. I am so grateful to all the parents for allowing your children to be a part of this fabulous experience. Thank you for transporting your super stars to and from rehearsals and performances and for helping us follow the new Star Struck drop off/pick up rules for 2019. Thank you so much to the mums who helped create our Ghostbusters t-shirts and to the four parents who were brave enough to experience four hours in a tin shed with over 1000 excited Primary School performers during each of the four live shows. Star Struck requires a lot of organisation (and note reading) to ensure everything runs smoothly and it certainly did. Thank you so very much for your support. A massive thank you to Mrs Edwards and Mr McCann for all their support and time with absolutely every aspect of Star Stuck this year. What a team! Thank you to Mrs Robinson for organising the school excursion to see the show on Friday. Thank you to Mrs Robinson again, Mrs Walsh, Miss Hamill and Mr Symons for coming to help us create magic at the live shows. Finally, thank you to Mrs Estens for her incredible support and all the staff at school for making so many allowances to let it all happen. It truly wouldn’t happen without them all. Congratulations to our fantastic Star Struck choir students along with Mrs Wilson and Mrs Bell – it is always amazing to share the experience with you. Congratulations to Jack V.E. Every time you were performing on the big screen in the holding room our 48 dancers let the whole room hear our support for you. We are forever your ‘groupies’! Thanks for a great Star Struck experience everyone.

Star Struck Choir 2019 Mirrors, love hearts, ABBA headbands beautiful songs and fantastic children all equal another hugely successful Star Struck year. 22 singers took the opportunity to be part of a schools spectacular that is Newcastle. To have the opportunity to perform to a large audience and to be part of such a professional production may be a once in a lifetime moment for many of our students and I am so proud of the students that took on the commitment this year. Lunch time rehearsals and long days in a very cold hall helped to prepare our students who when it came show time shone. It is delightful to watch the singers’

faces as they sing and dance with bright lights in their faces. After performing four shows the singers were still hanging in there at 10.00pm on Saturday night and gave everything they had. Congratulations kids on your ability to stay focused right till the end and how much effort you put into your performances. Thank-you parents for your positive support during show week. Thank you Mrs Barr for the lovely Finale cakes. Thank you Mr and Mrs Dempsey and Neve for the Saturday night pizza, very kind and generous. Thank you Mrs Bell and Mrs Estens for your company during show time. Who knows what next year’s Star Struck will bring but count me in!

Hunter Creative Arts Camp Nominations are now open for the 2019 Hunter Creative Arts Camp to be held at Camp Toukley Monday 2 September- Friday 6 September. The Hunter Creative Arts Camp is aimed at students in Years 5 and 6 with a passion for and exceptional abilities in music, art, dance or drama. This week-long intensive camp provides students with access to industry professionals in their area of expertise. Students are exposed to the secondary syllabus in their art form with activities in their specialised area each day to extend their skills, knowledge and understanding of their chosen area, and also complete one lesson during the week in each of the other creative arts areas. This allows students to be extended in a creative environment, with specialist staff and likeminded students, whilst also gaining an understanding of all art forms, and learning to be responsible and resourceful, and creating a sense of team as they work towards an end of camp performance for parents. Cost: The cost of the camp is $450. This includes all meals, accommodation, activities, specialist teachers, visiting professionals, supervision of students and a camp T-shirt. The nomination process: Information regarding the camp can be sent home to students who meet the above aim of the camp. Parents need to complete the online application form via the link included in the information booklet and the school will be asked to endorse the student’s application. If you are interested in this opportunity, your child is in Year 5 or 6 and meets the above criteria please see Mrs Kelly for an information booklet. Nominations are due by Friday 21 June.

Ethics Teaching Could you be an ethics teacher at Hamilton South Public School? Ethics at Hamilton South Public School has seen an increase in demand, and unfortunately there is currently a wait-list to enrol - particularly for Kindergarten. In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. We are looking for additional Ethics Teachers NOW to be able to continue providing Primary Ethics classes to meet the demand. Ethics teacher training workshops are currently being scheduled. If you are interested in finding our more information on becoming an Ethics Teacher, or about the Ethics at the school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au, or contact Grant Donnelly, on 0437697802 or at [email protected]

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN Our school is participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Please drop your stickers in the collection box in the school foyer. Promotion finishes on 25 June 2019.

HSPS Girls Basketball Knockout Gala Day On Tuesday 11 June the HSPS Girls Basketball Team played in the Newcastle PSSA Knockout Gala Day at Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium. The girls triumphed in their first game, defeating rivals Belair PS. They then had convincing wins against New Lambton South PS and Mayfield East in their round 2 and 3 games. In the Semi Final the girls had a tough opposition in Junction PS but they were no match for our dynamite team. The girls made it to round 5 which was the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Final against Valentine PS. Again, the girls were victorious defeating them 48-16 and now move on to the Hunter Region Final (round 6) to be played sometime in September. A huge thank you to Phil Morgan for his support and help with coaching the girls. Thank you to all the wonderful parents who helped assist with the bench, helped transport, support and cheer on the girls. It was a truly an inspirational day. I look forward to seeing what the girls can do in the Hunter Region Final.

SPORT NEWS:

Hunter Schools MTB Championships The Hunter Schools MTB Championship is a 2 day event that was held on Thursday and Friday of week 7. Thursday was for Primary aged students racing in u9, u11, and u13. There were over 60 boys and girls in the u13 category, including Beth D from year 6. The race format consisted of 3 laps of an approx. 3km course, racing through Glenrock Mountain Bike Park. Beth was racing against other girls almost 2 years older than her, and managed to climb through the pack to achieve 4th position. The racing was fierce, and the level of skill and commitment demonstrated by these kids was remarkable – as a spectator, it was exhilarating! The event was open to all students from Government, Catholic or Independent schools. The Secondary schools race on the Friday also had students racing for MTB Australia medals and National cup point. Any kids interested in mountain biking should definitely add this event to their calendar for 2020 – it is professionally run, and has a great event atmosphere. http://www.hunterschoolsmtb.com

In-App Purchase on the iPhone Nobody likes getting a credit card bill. Mystery charges on your credit card are even worse. When you find out that it’s someone in your family who is racking up these fees on your iTunes account it can be very frustrating. Most children don’t realise that they’re spending actual money when an app asks them to pay to level up or get a better character in a game. This same rule applies when they get a recess or lunch order for the canteen. I can’t tell you how many conversations I have had with students explaining to them that they didn’t just get ‘free food’ (as they have just told all of their friends), rather that their mum/dad/family member has already paid for it beforehand. There are a few precautions you can take to curb in-app purchases on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. These tips can help: Restrict Access. Use Screen Time to simply turn off the ability to make in-app purchases. Make sure Screen Time is turned on, follow the prompts to select whose device it is and to set up or enter your passcode, and then go to Content & Privacy Restrictions. Tap iTunes & App Purchases, then tap In-App Purchases and set it to Don't Allow. Require a passcode immediately. If you don't want to totally disable in-app purchases, you can set the device to require a passcode immediately for any in-app purchase or to allow a 15-minute grace period during which, after an initial in-app purchase, you can make purchases without re-entering the code for the iTunes account. Go to Settings, your name, iTunes & App Store, then Password Settings. Use Family Sharing. If you’d like to allow your responsible child to make purchases but not go wild. You can set up a family group and hand select apps to share to your kid's device. If they want to buy apps, you can select Ask to Buy so that you can approve or deny purchase requests, even if the app is free (it's on by default for kids under 13). You can use this feature with or without Screen Time enabled. Set expectations. Once the device's settings are squared away, it's time to establish some rules about in-app purchases. Decide whether you're willing to pay for them and, if so, under what circumstances. Or say you'll buy the game but won't allow any extra charges. When your child wants a new app, look at the number of in-app purchases available in a game (usually found on the app description page) before buying. Choose apps without purchases. Sometimes you have to pay more for apps that don't have in-app purchases. When it comes to apps for small children, it's usually worth it. Also, it may be cheaper over the long run to pay more initially, and you won't wind up with extra charges you can't account for. Concert band will perform from 8:20 - 8:40am and RockOn will perform from 8:45 - 8:55am. All band members need to remember to bring their instruments to school on this day. When band members arrive they need to go to the back of the hall to the grass area in front of Bill’s shed to warm their instruments up ready for their performance. If ALL Training Band members can be at school by 7:45am to set up and warm up that would be great and also ensure that our concert starts on time as we need to get through all 3 bands on the morning. All Concert Band members need to be at the rear of the hall by 8:05am and all RockOn members need to be there at 8:30am. Please remember your instruments and music.
