Dress Up Day
On Wednesday, April 25th, Arco Iris participated in “Dress up Day”! The students came to school in
their nice dress clothes and showed great school spirit! Here are a few photos from Rosa’s class from
the fun day:
When our kids come home with good grades on homework and tests, do you tell them they're
smart, or that they worked hard to get that good grade? Many people attribute success (good
grades) to superior intelligence but over 30 years of research has shown overemphasizing
someone is smart, leaves them to think they don't have to work hard for their success, that it's
innate. This in turn can lead to students feeling unmotivated and not willing to challenge
themselves. They start to get lazy and don't think they have to work hard for the grades
because they're naturally smart. Instead of telling your student they're smart, try telling them
they worked hard and you liked their effort. We can develop high achieving students with a
"growth mind-set" by praising their persistence and effort. Let's all help our students
recognize that achievement comes through hard work and start saying, "You worked hard on
that and look how your effort paid off, good job!" Or, "If you work hard, you can do it!" Two
great articles to read on raising hard-working kids:

This month Maestras Maria and Stephanie’s classes studied inventions. They started the unit off by
talking about how inventions have changed over time, the students then had the opportunity to
create an invention out of recycled materials. Students brought their inventions to school and
presented them in Spanish. After that students researched about an invention and the inventor.
Students learned about key inventions and how they change the way we live. Here are some pictures
of student inventions:

Trait of the Month for May: “SAFE”
Safe: “I am aware of my space, the people and situations around me.” Students demonstrate control of their bodies and are aware of what’s going on around them. They self-manage in a way that keeps them and others around them safe from harm. Examples of safe students are students who:
Choose to walk instead of run. Respects and follows playground rules. Sits in learning position. Keeps hands and body to self. Washes hands after using the bathroom, is careful with the water, and uses only the small amount
of soap. Listens carefully to teacher’s direction. Uses playground equipment appropriately. Uses classroom supplies appropriately. Follows all the rules of fire and lock down drills.
We are grateful to our students who showed outstanding Respect this month. They help build Arco Iris’ school community into a school family. They fill us with Jaguar pride! These students try to listen and understand the words of others. They give their full attention to their fellow classmates and adults around them. They use good manners and respectful words. Our recipients for outstanding Respect are:
