Opening the program and welcoming over 900 guests was our Honorary Co- Chairs, Secretary of State Esperanza “Hope” Andrade and Senator Kirk Watson. Among our Recipients was Gustavo “Gus” Garcia who received the Hispanic Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the first of its kind to be presented at the Annual Banquet. The Hispanic Chamber is pleased to recognize Former Mayor Garcia for his outstanding contributions to the Hispanic Community, and for his leadership in Central Texas. “I feel very good! The Chamber has been an association that I have be a part of for over many years, going back to the 70’s, back then I served as president of the board and I’m very proud of their accomplishments throughout the years,” stated Gus Garcia. Garcia has been a major force in Austin politics and government for more than three decades. Garcia was a charter member of the 1967 Human Relations Commission during the Civil Rights movement. In 1972, Garcia became the first Hispanic elected to the Austin school board. He spent three terms on city council in the 1990s, and in 1994, Gus was the first City Council incumbent in the City’s history to run for re-election unopposed. He also served as a trustee of both the Austin Independent School District and Austin Community College from 1972-1978. Among his many accomplishments, Garcia has been honored with the LULAC Award for Political Involvement & Education, 1992; Whitney M. The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted a house full of prominent community and business leaders at its 36th Annual Awards & Installation Ban-quet on February 20th at the Austin Hilton Hotel.

Opening the program and welcoming over 900 guests was our Honorary Co-Chairs, Secretary of State Esperanza “Hope” Andrade and Senator Kirk Watson.

Among our Recipients was Gustavo“Gus” Garcia who received the Hispanic Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the fi rst of its kind to be presented at the Annual Banquet. The Hispanic Chamber is pleased to recognize Former Mayor Garcia for his outstanding contributions to the Hispanic Community, and for his leadership in Central Texas.

“I feel very good! The Chamber has been an association that I have be a part of for over many years, going back to the 70’s, back then I served as president of the board and I’m very proud of their accomplishments throughout the years,” stated Gus Garcia.

Garcia has been a major force in Austin politics and government for more than three decades. Garcia was a charter member of the 1967 Human Relations Commission during the Civil Rights movement. In 1972, Garcia became the fi rst Hispanic elected to the Austin school board. He spent three terms on city council in the 1990s, and in 1994, Gus was the fi rst City Council incumbent in the City’s history to run for re-election unopposed. He

also served as a trustee of both the Austin Independent School District and Austin Community College from 1972-1978.

Among his many accomplishments, Garcia has been honored with the LULAC Award for Political Involvement & Education, 1992; Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award, Boy Scouts of America Capital Area Council, 1991; Hispanic of the Year, Austin Independent School District, 1986; Businessman of the Year, Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce, 1984; and Humanitarian Award, Martin Luther King Association, 1984.

In collaboration, Franco and Garcia recognized the Chamber’s nine award recipients. After an eventful award ceremony, Garcia took the stage, embraced by the audience; she began her ad-dress by thanking all of her supporters and family.

With the Chamber’s mission in mind, she continued, “it is im-portant to recognize that in order to achieve the goals of your Chamber we must work collectively. It is our community that binds, maintains, and strengthens our mission. During my ten-ure as your Chair, I want for your Chamber to be [...] a resource for the empowerment and advancement of the community as a whole. That is my vision.”

Throughout her address Garcia highlighted several of the organization’s accomplishments and future goals. She also encouraged everyone to continue their involvement with the Chamber. The new GAHCC Chair closed with, “It is my pledge to you that I will focus and work to pave our paths to prosperity with these goals in mind. I thank you for your membership to the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Your faith in our organization and in our community is what will make this year prosperous.”

Monique Peña Named Businesswoman of the YearAt its 36th Annual Awards Banquet, the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC) namedMonique Peña as its 2009 Businesswoman of the Year.

Moments before stepping on stage and moved by emotion Pena stated, “I feel blessed, honored, excited and a little nervous. I want to thank God, the Chamber and my family for their support.”

Owner of Caribbean Fitness and Peña Accounting and Tax Services, Ms. Peña has been an active member of the GAHCC since 2006. Currently serving as Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee, Peña’s professional leadership and passion makes her the ideal recipient of the distinguished Businesswoman of the Year award.

Congratulations to our Businessmen of the Year2009 Chair, Blanca Garcia and 2008 Chair, Robert Franco had the pleasure of recognizing Rogelio Puente, Fernando Nieri and Nicolas Walker, partners of Zoticus Design, as the Chamber’s Businessmen of the Year.

Rogelio Puente, Graphic Designer and Photographer, stated “I am grateful to all who helped us get to this point. I’m so happy to be here to accept this award. I congratulate my partners for a job well done.”

Nicholas Walker, Zoticus’ Graphic Designer and Web Developer, stated “I’m very honored and very humbled. The Hispanic Chamber has been a wonderful friend over the last three years.”

Fernando Nieri, Business Development and Operation Manager, stated, “I feel super excited! I’m meeting great people and I love the Chamber. I couldn’t be happier.”

Since 2006, Zoticus Design has developed marketing tools for several GAHCC events and projects, such as this year’s Annual Banquet program.

ERO Architects, Small Business of the Year

Housing Authority of the City of Austin,Government Partner of the Year

The GAHCC awarded ERO Architects its 2009 Small Business of the Year. Jesus Delgado, Partner and Chief Operations Offi cer stated, “I’m honored, really honored. I didn’t expect it. This is a really wonderful thing. I am here to accept this award on behalf of ERO, our clients, people and projects.”

Providing architecture and structural engineering services, ERO partners regionally with other established fi rms to create a comprehensive group of talent and experience. Jesus V. Delgado, COO brings the ERO team thirty fi ve years of experience. His experience is comprised of Hensel Phelps, CF Jordan, and Beck Construction. Mr. Delgado continues to serve as an outstanding mentor and model business owner by mentoring young professionals interested in seeking a career in architecture.

The GAHCC proudly presented State Farm Insurance with the award for Corporation of the Year. Vice President of Agency in the Central Texas and South Texas areas, Chris Schell stated, “I feel honored. I think together we have done a lot in the community and I’m excited to see what we can do together in the future. I am the lucky one that gets to receive the award tonight but there are a lot of hard working individuals who have been working behind the scenes who really deserve this.”

In 2008, State Farm Insurance was selected to the Hispanic Business Magazine Diversity Elite 60 and for the 11th consecutive year, State Farm Insurance was selected as a LATINA Style 50 company from more than 800 U.S. Corporations. State Farm is also recognized for the support and partnership with several organizations in Central Texas.

Among our award recipients was the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), recognized as Government Partner of the Year.

Accepting the award for HACA was James Hargrove, President and Chief Executive Offi cer. “I feel wonderful, and humbled that the Housing Authority is being recognized tonight and hope to continue our partnership with the Hispanic Chamber,” stated Hargrove.

HACA has been a longstanding member of GAHCC. In collaboration with HACA, GAHCC’s Hispanic Technology Institute of Austin (HTIA), established Emerging Enterprises Business Development Resource Center in 2008. The Center is responsible for incubating new businesses and helping existing busiensses grow.

Marianne Martinez, Volunteer of the YearFor her outstanding efforts and volunteerism, the GAHCC honored Marianne Martinez as its 2009 Volunteer of the Year.

“Receiving the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award was a great honor. It gives me great pleasure to be involved within the Austin community and I will continue to support the Greater Austn Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. I will continue to encourage individuals to be involved with issues of interest and make a contribution and difference in the hispanic community. I want to thank Andy Martinez and his staff for doing such a tremendous job and giving me the opportunity to be involved with special projects.

Martinez, a longstanding supporter of the GAHCC, has devoted her time and energy to supporting not only the GAHCC but other local organizations throughout the Greater Austin area.

Anthony “Tony” Hernandez, Ambassador of the YearThe Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Anthony “Tony” Hernandez as our 2009 Ambassador of the Year.

“I feel a little nervous but good. As I look around the room I see people like Gus Garcia and I feel like a little person in a room with all these big people. To me it’s more about the relationship and not the award. I have met some really great people. I plan to still be a part of the chamber past the award,” stated Hernandez.

Since the start of his participation in of the Ambassador Program, Mr. Hernandez has been a proud representative of the GAHCC by welcoming and engaging members at events. An active supporter of all GAHCC initiatives,Mr. Hernandez is ready to help in any way possible and exemplifi es the term “Ambassador”.

Pilar Sanchez Accepts the 2009 Chair’s Award“Each year the outgoing chair has the honor of selecting the person that has made outstanding and signifi cant contributions, and allow me to emphasize contributions, plural, to our Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.” stated Robert Franco, 2008 Chair. “It is with great honor that I present the 2008 Chair’s award to my friend and colleague Pilar Sanchez.”

Pilar Sanchez, Recipient of the Chair’s Award stated, “I’m excited and tremendously honored that the chamber is recognizing my efforts and the Technology Institute for everything we accomplished this past year.”

Three years ago, Pilar became the Chair of the Hispanic Technology Institute of Austin, (HTIA). As Chair, Pilar launched, HTIA’s business support center with a grant funded by AT&T. At the time, the business support center was housed within the chamberoffi ces. With Pilar’s leadership and guidance, the business support center has grown into the Emerging Enterprises Business Development Resource Center, a full service incubator facility located at 1144 East Airport Boulevard.

In partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Austin, and the Hispanic Chamber, the new business incubation center now provides state of the art business technology classes and assists entrepreneurs with resources to start or expand their business. Pilar has played a signifi cant role in the advancement of HTIA and the grand opening of Emerging Enterprises Business Development Resource Center. Through her hard work and focused approach, Pilar epitomizes the Chamber’s mission, to increase our members’ wealth.

Our Newest Tejano Robert Franco, 2008 Chair2007 Chair, Paul Saldaña welcomed Robert Franco, 2008 Chair, into the legendary Los Tejanos. Los Tejanos is a select group of GAHCC Former Chairs.

Vice President of Business Banking for Bank of America, Robert Franco has served on the Hispanic Chamber Board of Directors since 2004. Affi liated with Bank of America in Austin for over 27 years, Franco has played an active role in Austin as a community and business leader. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Austin Voices for Educa-tion and Youth and is a long time member and a Paul Harris Fellow with the Oak Hill Rotary Club. Robert is also a former Board Member of the Business and Community Lenders of Texas and a former Board of Director and Treasurer for the Westlake Chamber of Commerce. He has served on various education committees within AISD but is most proud of his past service as long time volunteer for Junior Achievement. He and his wife Gloria are in their second year as mentors at Eastside Memorial High School, formerly Johnston High School.
