The Labrador current, also known as Iceberg Alley, ows

down the northeast coast of Newfoundland skirting the

islands of Twillingate, Change Islands and Fogo. These are

amongst the best places in Newfoundland to sea the giant

cathedrals of ice as they slip by, melting and breaking up

with the warming of the season.

These islands also embody the historic essence of Notre

Dame Bay, which was central to the way of life of the native,

and now extinct, Beothuck people. Europeans, rst theFrench, established seasonal sheries here in the early

1600s; later the English of Devon and Dorset became the

    primary settlers.

These islands retain much of their historic charm and

picturesque character displaying the style and craftsmanship

so distinctive of Newfoundland. The cod shery made these

towns hum and bustle in the past. Today, despite their

increasingly diverse economies, making a living from the sea

still makes an indelible mark on the people, the life style and

    the commerce of these towns.

Rocky, rugged and windswept, the land- and seascapes

have an elemental quality that helped forge the peoplewhose spirits are quick to incite laughter sure to warm

your soul. Join Dennis Minty and Antje Springmann on this

photographic exploration of a sequence of Newfoundlands
