NOTRE DAME OF MT. CARMEL, CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ Our Parish Mission Statement We are a welcoming Catholic Christian community alive in the faith! Through Baptism, we are called to become the heart, the hands and the voice of Jesus. We do this through Eucharist, liturgical celebrations, prayer, and nurturing parish ministries, “That in all things God may be glorified.” (Rule of St. Benedict)

Message of thanks from the Pastor:

Our dear Jesus always has his arms wrapped tight around us. At Eucharist, we gain the vision to keep our arms open as well, to recognize and welcome whomever and whatever comes our way. A posture of

open arms will ensure that we are ready to embrace our God who has already prepared a place for us!

Love, Father Jude

WHERE THE CHURCH IS, THERE IS THE SPIRIT OF GOD; AND WHERE THE SPIRIT OF GOD IS, THERE IS THE CHURCH AND

ALL GRACE, AND THE SPIRIT IS TRUTH. —St. Irenaeus

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

All Is Grace On Sundays in Ordinary Time, the Old Testament reading is selected for the light it sheds on the day’s Gospel. Today, Ezekiel sees God lifting up the lowly tree and making the withered tree bloom. So in the second parable of today’s Gospel, Jesus encourages us by promising that, as fragile seeds grow into an abundant harvest, and the tiny mustard seed into a hearty plant, so God will grow the kingdom from small beginnings to an instrument of salvation for

all. In the first parable, the land yields fruit “of its own accord” (Mark 4:28). Not only is the initiative God’s, but the parable teaches that the seed’s growth, though invisible at first, is actually unstoppable! To be sure, those who depend on the impressive or dramatic in order to be convinced or encouraged will be disappointed in the slow unfolding of the kingdom that Jesus announces. But for those who do accept the kingdom, all is grace, and that grace is certain.

Though the second reading is not coordinated with either the first reading or Gospel on these Sundays, today’s is thematically appropriate. Saint Paul argues that our experience of God’s trustworthiness thus far should

make us a people of undaunted courage and unshakeable faith. But at the same time Paul warns that faith should also make us aware of our responsibility to do good.

INCLUDING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN WORSHIP AND RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The first step for including children with special needs in any program at church or elsewhere begins with personal attitudes. Inclusion has more to do with one's philosophy, approach, and willingness to learn than a "how to" check list. It is about seeing each child, no matter how challenged, as having the potential to learn and the same need to be loved and included as all other children. In the church, inclusion is also about wanting every child to know that they are deeply loved by God. Each child deserves the opportunity to worship and learn about God in whatever way he or she is able. With this foundation, a way can be found to include everyone - even the most challenged children.

Do you know someone who has a child with special needs? Please tell them about our SPECIAL NEEDS Religious Ed. Program, which offers children from 5 through 21 the ability to learn about the love and care of Jesus in their own way and at their own pace. For more information please contact Marilyn at 973-538-1358, ext. 121.

FOR OUR YOUTH!

HIGH SCHOOL TEENS: Join us for Crossroads on Thursdays, 7:30-9pm, for uplifting sharing and scripture studies with honest, open discussion about the challenges we face as Catholic Christians in the real world.

QUO VADIS VOCATIONS DISCERNMENT RETREAT Vocations Discernment for young men 15-25

“Quo Vadis - Where are you going?” Legend tells us that Saint Peter asked Jesus this question on the outskirts of Rome. We know where Jesus went in response to His Father's will. What is the Father's will

for you? Quo Vadis Days is a time of recreation, fellowship, prayer and discussion to help you explore our Lord's call in your life. Activities will include prayer, Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Liturgy of the Hours, Rosary, hiking, games, recreation, sports, talks, great food, and discussions. A time to share our faith and meet other young men seeking God's will. Quo Vadis Days will be held July 8-10, 2015 at the Sacred Heart Retreat Center in Newton, New Jersey. The cost is free. IS SOMEONE'S DRINKING CAUSING YOU CONCERN?

Come join the Al-Anon group here at Notre Dame. Meetings are held every Thursday, 8:30-9:30pm, in Rm. 112. At Al-Anon meetings, the friends and family members of problem drinkers share their experiences and learn how to apply the principles of the Al-Anon program to their individual situations. Younger family members and friends attend Alateen meetings (http://al-anon.org/for-alateen). Newcomers to Al-Anon are often interested in learning from members whose personal situations most closely resemble theirs. After attending Al-Anon meetings, they begin to understand how much they have in common with everyone affected by someone else's drinking, regardless of the specific details of their personal situation. Participants learn that they are not alone in the problems they face, and that they have choices that lead to greater peace of mind, whether the drinker continues to drink or not.

ADVICE FOR PARENTS WITH CHILDREN WHO HAVE LEFT THE CHURCH

In an article recently published by The Integrated Catholic Life (wwwintegratedcatholiclife.org) Fr. Thomas Grafsgaard made seven suggestions for parents whose children have rejected the faith.

1. Keep praying. Just as St. Monica never stopped praying and having faith in her son Augustine’s conversion, so too must we persevere.

2. Back off. “Don’t beat them over the head with a Bible or whip them with a rosary,” Fr. Tom said. “If the person is not in a position to receive the message, ease off the gasoline.”

3. Make daily sacrifices. “There are countless windows of opportunities to offer up hidden sacrifices for conversions,” said Fr. Tom. Examples he gave included leaving cream out of your coffee, turning off the television and using the time to volunteer.

4. Learn more about your faith. You will be in a better position to explain and defend the faith when you know it more fully. “You are not expected to know all the answers but you can say, ‘I don’t know but I‘ll find out.’”

5. Live your faith with joy. “I’ve never heard anyone say they’ve returned to the Church because their mother harassed them,” he said. “Pope Francis was not chosen by Time Magazine as Man of the Year because he solved all the world’s problems,” Fr. Tom noted. “People are attracted to him for his joy. They want that joy the world cannot give.”

6. Love and freedom go hand in hand. Just as God did not stop Eve from listening to the devil and eating the apple, Fr. Tom explained that we cannot make our children’s decisions for them. He said to pray, “Lord, my children and my grandchildren are yours. I’m going to bed now. I trust you have a plan for them.”

7. Pray and trust that God can reach them on their journey. There are many roads that can lead to God. Never doubt that God can meet them on theirs.
