From the Desk of Father Scolaro
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As you may have seen advertised, this weekend and next weekend we will be hosting an open house of our convent. As we have been discussing plans for the convent, it became clear that many parishioners have never been in the building and were excited by the prospect of seeing inside. We will therefore have tours both weekends after the 9AM, 10:30AM, and 12PM Masses for anyone who is interested. It will be possible to see both what the convent currently looks like (which is a bit shabby), and sketches of what we hope the convent can become.
We will also be hosting another set of town hall meetings on Wednesday, September 9th, at 9AM and 7:30PM. While we had been moving ahead with planning for our parish projects, to speak honestly, and per-haps unsurprisingly, the chaos of the past 6 months have seen these planned delayed substantially. I also un-derstand that the world is very different now than it was when we first began these conversations. As support and excitement on the part of the parish is essential, I hope to get a good read on where the parish stands, but I also hope these opportunities can help reignite enthusiasm for our plans.
Especially looking around at the world right now we can get caught up in all of the bad news. So much uncertainty and fear can paralyze us and worry us in how to move forward. I would like to think here at Notre Dame, however, we are in great shape to move forward. Throughout the time of the pandemic it became clear that this is a community of people who want God in their lives and want the parish to be a hub of activity. Par-ticularly looking at the rising Mass attendance and collections, even with the difficult times facing us, it is evi-dent that our parish is thriving and drawing in many new faces from the surrounding area. A beacon of hope is a beautiful invitation in the darkness, and your dedication to the faith is a powerful witness to a society search-ing for stability and assurance.
My hope, therefore, is that all of us are still anxious to begin these projects. Rather than go on the re-treat, this seems like a moment where we can rise up and boldly strike forward, projecting confidence in who we are and what we believe. As much as this is my hope though, I do ask that you share with me your thoughts. It is lamentable that I have been unable to stand at the back and greet everyone after Mass due to the current situation, but I hope to be able to return to the practice soon. Until then, do not hesitate to reach out and drop me a line. The more parishioners I hear from, the clearer a picture I can get of what everyone is thinking.
So I ask you to please come to the open house, and see for yourself the disrepair of the convent and the great potential hidden within. Please check out the plans for the church in our last virtual town hall meeting on youtube if you haven’t yet, and see for yourself the ways in which we hope to only augment the beauty of our spiritual home. And then please come to the town hall meeting and take part in the conversation! I pray we will all agree that this work, as difficult as it may be, will prove to be a valuable investment in the future of our faith and our church. The programming in the convent and the beauty of the church which points to God’s glory will both serve as powerful tools to evangelize our community and build up the faith here in New Hyde Park.
Yours in Christ,

Father Joe’s Corner
Parish & Spiritual
Growth
Last week, I shared the 12 steps for our Parish & spiritual growth. In the coming weeks I will be ex-plaining these 12 points with practical measures through which we can grow spiritually as a parish community. The first step for parish spiritual growth is: “As a member of my congregation/ parish, I know what is expected of me” Recently, I heard a local church advertise on public radio with these words, “Our church seeks God, practices justice and creates community.” Our par-ish mission statement says: “we as a parish commu-nity under the patronage of our Blessed Mother pro-claim our belief in the message and mission of Jesus Christ”. We know who we are and for what we are called to be. Our mission inspires and empowers us to be fully alive and awake in the world as a mem-ber of a body that has a purpose. We have to make a conscious effort to accomplish that mission at Notre Dame. The most important sign of a spiritually grown par-ish is that everyone in the community knows what is expected of them. We all come forward as a parish community to share our gifts and talents for the growth of the parish. There are many ministries available for you. Join what is best for you and be-come active in the parish. As members of Notre Dame, we need to become a vibrant community. A vibrant parish is alive with a pulse that is felt and seen from within by its mem-bers, by its works, ministries and reputation. All who enter our church should feel welcome by the hospitality of others: let us become a welcoming community. Blessings, Fr. Joe Mappilamattel

School Supplies Our school supply drive is continuing now through Au-gust 31st. Due to COVID-19 we cannot accept physi-cal donations this year. Instead we will be doing a Gift Card drive to assist families. Whether students learn from the classroom or home there will still be a need for school supplies. Please donate either a Target or Walmart Gift Card for a family in need. We believe those specific cards will best serve families school sup-ply needs as well as any other essential items needed for their children. For security reasons please drop off cards in the mail slot in the Rectory office. Any amount you wish to contribute is greatly appreciated!
Families Giving Back “Read-A-Thon”
