Welcome to your theatre

Welcome to our autumn season which promises to be full of all the drama, fun and fantasy one could want as the nights draw in.

Opening with Noël Coward’s delightful comedy Blithe Spirit, its first production here for fifty years, we continue with the return of a number of Playhouse friends. Richard Baron directs Our Man In Havana which will be as inventive and enjoyable as his past hits, Travels With My Aunt and The Hound Of The Baskervilles.

In October, Shared Experience returns with another remarkable production to follow on from War and Peace and A Passage To India, whilst many old (and not so old) favourites will join us for Christmas and New Year in Kenneth Alan Taylor’s sumptuous panto, Beauty And The Beast.

To finish the season some of those friends will stay on to appear in Forever Young, a song-filled entertainment set in a home for retired Pantomime performers. It promises to be a glorious end to a wonderful season.

Add in a great international dance programme, comedy to bring the house down and music for all tastes and we think you have six months of the best entertainment, right here on your doorstep. We look forward to welcoming you back to Nottingham Playhouse.

Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company in a co-production with Shared Experience and West yorkshire Playhouse presents

By Bertolt Brecht In a new translation by Alistair Beaton

Dr Gordon Ramsey from the University of Nottingham will be giving a lecture on ‘The Theatre of Bertolt Brecht’ on Wednesday 11 November at 6pm. Places are free but limited, call Box Office to book your seat.

In the worst and bloodiest of times, good people still exist.

As a city burns with war a wealthy woman abandons her baby to flee to safety. As the war gathers momentum a young servant girl discovers the abandoned child and braving unknown dangers takes it with her. But when peace is finally restored the boy’s mother returns to claim her child.

A judge sets about resolving the dispute by calling on the ancient tradition of the Chalk Circle. But in a culture of corruption and deception, who will win?

Written by the grandmaster of theatre and peopled with characters both comic

and vivid, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century.

This new production includes a stunning new musical score performed live by a superb ensemble of actors joined on stage by a chorus drawn from members of the local community.

The award-winning writer Alistair Beaton wrote the bitingly witty stage play Feelgood which was produced by Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company in 2004.

Nottingham Playhouse is thrilled to be working with Shared Experience again after the success of War and Peace in 2008 and A Passage to India in 2004.

Join us for the first public reading of this brand new play on its journey towards becoming a full stage production.

In 1930, legendary Australian batsman Donald Bradman notched up over 1000 runs for his team and returned home bearing The Ashes. With England determined to avenge the defeat, scheming to counter Bradman’s prodigious talent began immediately. By the time the England team set sail for Australia two years later, under the captaincy of Douglas Jardine, a new line of bowling attack had been devised – Bodyline.

Harold Larwood, a coal miner from Nottinghamshire, was chosen for the job and was instructed by Jardine to bowl ‘leg theory’. As a result of Bodyline, England were victorious. Larwood slashed Bradman’s average from 139 to 56 – but at what cost? Politicians took their stand, trade relations between the countries became strained and Jardine and Larwood became the two most hated men in Australia.

Adapted from a powerful, beautifully illustrated book for children that explores what happens when a lonely stranger is washed up on the beach of an isolated island. Neither understands the other’s language, and all are suspicious of what he brings to the island. Except the fisherman. He argues that the man should be integrated into the community and help with their daily lives, but all refuse, even the priest. The people are frightened, and eventually there is no other solution but to cast him back into the sea and build a wall around their little piece of land.

A street dance version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

The classic story is injected with a large dose of hip-hop energy by Bounce, who are known for creating high-energy, imaginative street-dance theatre.

In the confines of a psychiatric hospital, breakdance becomes a way of expressing freedom and rebelling against the iron rule of Nurse Ratched – who happens to be a ballet fan...

The show features a fantastic soundtrack including hits from stars like Missy Elliot, Dizzee Rascal, Gotan Project, David Holmes and Cypress Hill.

Inventive set design (including bungee-jumping breakdancers!), film and choreography are mixed to produce a fast-paced show that is at times funny, at times moving, and always packed to the rafters with high-octane dance moves.

“ Insane in the Brain makes Ken Kesey’s classic story seem designed for a hip-hop makeover. Hip-hop’s skewed poses, crazy angles and zombie walks lend themselves to the subject; but Bounce transform the style into real theatre”

We’re delighted to welcome back the king of satirical comedy, Marcus Brigstocke to the Playhouse with his new show. There’s not much that hasn’t come under his comedic gaze, with blisteringly funny results. Thumbs UpThumbs up is a new project for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Four artists visited two special schools during the summer, working intensively with students and their teachers on ideas, approaches and stories. This will form the groundwork for a new play, specially designed for students with complex disabilities, which will tour schools regionally and nationally in the summer term 2010. If you’d like to be kept up to date on the progress of the project, or express interest in booking the show into your school next year, please email Kitty Parker at [email protected].
