The National Context In September 2013 the DfE published the new National Curriculum which is to be taught in all maintained schools from September 2014. The programmes of study should be used by schools to develop their own curriculum. In the new curriculum the subject of ICT has been replaced by Computing. The introductory paragraph of the programme of study for Computing describes three aspects of the computing curriculum: computer science (CS), information technology (IT) and digital literacy (DL). 1The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Background to the Nottinghamshire Computing Framework The Nottinghamshire Computing Framework is a revision of the Nottinghamshire ICT Framework which was created in 2008 by the Nottinghamshire Curriculum ICT Team. It has been produced at the request of many schools who were using the ICT Framework. Although the emphasis of the new curriculum has moved towards the Computer Science aspects, many of the key ideas and skills included in the original framework remain as important. The new Computing Framework takes account of this change in emphasis as well incorporating new technologies now available to schools such as tablet technologies and cloud based computing. The document represents a framework and not a scheme of work. With the increasing range of digital devices and the increased freedom schools have in developing their school curriculum it would be very difficult to produce a scheme of work which would meet the needs of all schools. It is anticipated that schools will develop their own approaches to implementing the framework. The Curriculum Framework The Curriculum Framework consists of a progression of key concepts and skills broken down into three strands Communication, Finding Out and Computing. In addition to these three strands there is a section on e-safety. We feel that this should not be seen as a separate strand but should be embedded in all aspects of the Computing Curriculum Each strand is presented as a progression from Key Stage One, Lower Key Stage Two and Upper Key Stage Two. It offers a clear picture of how skills and concepts in each strand progress. This will support differentiation and the development of personalised learning. The strands are also presented in phases to support a school in their medium term planning. Early Years has not been included in the progression as EYFS has a separate Framework and does not follow the National Curriculum . However a section on EYFS has been included and follows the three strands of the KS1 and KS2 curriculum. The framework may be used independently, broken down and integrated into the wider curriculum or in conjunction with the school’s own units of work for ICT. No time allocation has been given to each strand.

National Curriculum in England

Purpose of study

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Aims

The National Curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation

can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems

can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems

are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

Attainment targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

Pupils should be taught to:

understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions

create and debug simple programs

use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs

recognise common uses of information technology beyond school

Pupils should be taught to:

design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts

use sequence, selection and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output

use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs

understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the world wide web, and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration

use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked and be discerning in evaluating digital content

select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information

use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

This extends their knowledge of one quadrant to all four quadrants, including the use of negative numbers.
