Just The Way You Are Written by Antonia Rivas, 2013

Who is Bruno Mars? Turn on the radio these days and you will most definitely hear the vocal talents of Hawaiian-born pop artist, Bruno Mars. Raised in a family of music-makers (his father, Pete, was a Latin percussionist (drum player), and his mother, Bernie, was a singer), Bruno spent his childhood performing throughout his hometown of Honolulu. At the age of 4, Bruno joined his family’s musical act as an Elvis impersonator and quickly became one of the stars of the show. He continued to perform with his family at the Ilikai Hotel in Honolulu and even began to impersonate Michael Jackson. After graduating high school in 2002, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a musical career.

Hollywood Transformation If you looked at his birth certificate, would you expect to see the name Bruno Mars? Hopefully not, since this eccentric name is purely his stage name (an artist or celebrity-status name which is different from their birth-given name.) In actuality, the singer we know as Bruno Mars is legally named Peter Gene Hernandez. The Road to Success After relocating to Los Angeles, Bruno became frustrated with waiting for his career to move forward so he turned to songwriting. Shortly thereafter, he was able to join a music production team known as The Smeezingtons. While there, Bruno experienced much success as a premier songwriter of pop music. Finally, in 2010, Bruno broke out as a mainstream singer with his hit single featuring B.o.B., “Nothin’ on You.” The song skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart. Bruno’s Chart-Topping Albums and Singles Several months later, Mars released his first solo single, “Just the Way You Are,” another single that landed the pop performer on top of the Billboard singles chart. The single became Bruno’s lead single for his debut studio album entitled Doo-Wops & Hooligans which released in October 2010. His first album reached No. 3 on Billboard’s album charts, and includes, “Grenade,” and “The Lazy Song.” In late 2011, Bruno even scored another hit with his contribution to The Twilight Saga soundtrack with “It Will Rain.” His debut album was even nominated for seven Grammy Awards, and Mars ended up winning Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Just the Way You Are.” His second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, peaked at number one in the United States spawning these international hit singles: “Locked Out of Heaven,” and “When I Was Your Man.” Is He Fur Real? When he’s not in the studio recording new songs or on tour selling out concerts, Bruno enjoys spending time at home with his furry four-legged friend, Geronimo. Geronimo is a Rottweiler hand-picked by Bruno during April 2012 while he was just a miniature little pup, but before long, this dog has quadrupled in size! Geronimo has definitely met his master’s need for a big dog. Future Forecast With his formula of combining catchy pop melodies, hip-hop beats and feel-good lyrics, Bruno Mars has emerged as a popular artist. And after a lifetime of striving to reach the top of the music industry, Mars is now trying to enjoy the moment. Music industry experts predict his hit-making formula will continue to keep Bruno’s music at the top of the charts for years to come!
