I read recently that there are over 500,000 volunteers in WA who contribute more than $4Billion to the economy. These are staggering figures. Our Association could not exist without voluntary service. There are those that volunteer by serving on our various Committees and of course our wonderful Sunday cooking brigade! You may not be aware of the time it takes for example, for someone to prepare a dish for our Sunday lunches. Cooks offer to prepare anything from 30 to 70 serves of a dish. Work often starts on the Friday before the lunch, shopping, cutting and preparing. Depending on the work involved, preparation continues throughout Saturday, culminating in a very early start on Sunday morning to cook dishes that cannot be done the day before. So by the time we arrive on Sunday to get a ticket for lunch, our won- derful cooks will have been busy for hours and often days in advance. There are also those who prepare delicious cakes and goodies that are so popular, a very high proportion of which are donated every month. Then there are those who have to attend to the set up of the hall, in- cluding the drinks table, bags of ice and large esky, delivery of the mi- crowave and cutlery for the kitchen, cutting and boxing up cakes. There are so many things that need to be done each month by so many peo- ple who give of their time and effort so kindly, that they deserve our combined thanks and recognition for what they do for us all. Please take time to appreciate the tremendous dedication of those who volunteer for our Association we would not survive without them. JOAN MARBECK

Hello members and friends

November is the month for remembrance, both for our departed loved ones and also for those who have given their lives in the service of their country.

As usual, we will have a special church ser-vice and our November lunch will be dedi-cated to the memory of those members who have passed away (see details on page 3). Letters will be going out shortly to invite sur-viving member spouses to join us for a com-plimentary lunch.

At this time of reflection and thanksgiving for selflessness I would like to remind mem-

bers of the amount of volunteer work that is done by those who contrib-ute continually in so many ways to the pleasure we all derive from the Association and its functions.

So by the time we arrive on Sunday to get a ticket for lunch, our won-derful cooks will have been busy for hours and often days in advance. There are also those who prepare delicious cakes and goodies that are so popular, a very high proportion of which are donated every month.

Then there are those who have to attend to the set up of the hall, in-cluding the drinks table, bags of ice and large esky, delivery of the mi-crowave and cutlery for the kitchen, cutting and boxing up cakes. There are so many things that need to be done each month by so many peo-ple who give of their time and effort so kindly, that they deserve our combined thanks and recognition for what they do for us all.

Please take time to appreciate the tremendous dedication of those who volunteer for our Association – we would not survive without them.

Enjoy the Newsletter especially the items about Joan Marbeck, the Christmas Dance, Car Rally and all the great photos of fun had over the last month.

See you at the November lunch.

Youth Committee

Hello members…..The weather has finally warmed up and we are gearing up for more activities especially outdoors. The numbers attending monthly lunches have grown and it‘s fantastic to see our younger mem-bers there as well. There‘s more exciting activities being planned starting in November.

8TH

NOVEMBER 2009 – ‗Remembrance Day – Cricket Game‟. To be held after the November lunch. Potentially playing for the ―Remembrance Day Shield‖. All members are welcome to participate but we are hoping to form a team of our younger members between the ages of 10 and 30‘s…so please bring your children and grandchildren along to the November lunch. We will be playing a ‗20/20‘ or shortened ‗limited overs‘ version of cricket depending on the number of players and teams. We will provide all the necessary equipment all you need to do is turn up!

Some other Youth activities being planned for the coming months are as follows:

Talentime / Musical Soiree – Calling for expressions of interest. To allow especially our younger mem-bers to show off their musical/artistic talents. Prizes will be awarded to all participants with major prizes for top performers.

We also require children/youth dancers and to perform our second Portuguese dance routine and dance instructors and dancers to perform other cultural dances such as Pilipino bamboo dance, Chinese fan dance, Indian traditional or Bollywood dances etc. Please let me know if you are able to assist.

Children/Youth to form a Christmas carolling group to lead our members in a sing a long at the December lunch. Come along to the November lunch or call give me a call with your name and contact details so that we can prepare for couple of quick practises. Please let me know if you can play an instru-ment. Other members are also welcome but priority will be given to our younger members.

„New Years Games Day‟ – “Eurasianlympics”. Planned for after the February lunch. Its the start of the new year, weather‘s fine, everyone‘s still in a holiday mood….sounds like a great recipe to work off the ‗extra kilos‘ from the Christmas/holiday season!!! A series of competitive games will be organised both outdoor and indoor to win the coveted title of ―Eurasianlympics Champion Team‖. Aimed mainly at our younger members but being a team competition, all members are welcome. Form family teams e.g. ―Team De Souza‖ or location teams e.g. ‗Team Morley‘. ‗Heritage‘ games such as ‗rounders‘, ‗sepak tak-raw‘, ‗chatek‘, ‗hop scotch‘, ‗badminton‘ maybe incorporated into the competition so watch this space for more details….

I require assistance especially from some of our younger members with organising these activities and would like to form a sub committee. If you can help, please call me on 0402 113 987. It‘s a lot of work and your assistance will really be appreciated. Chad Beins - Youth Coordinator

At the recent Back to the 70‘s Dance we were privileged to have a special visitor, Joan Marbeck from Melaka.

Joan is an internationally renowned author who has pub-lished several books on the Kristang language. Kristang is the Portuguese–Creole language which has evolved from Portuguese, English, Malay and other dialects spoken in the Melaka area since early settlement in 1511.

Joan has very kindly donated a selection of beautiful books she has written on the Kristang language and the inheri-tance of the Portuguese Eurasian culture in Melaka. There is also a beautiful coffee table book called Malaysia‘s Amazing Heritage in which Joan and the Kristang language are prominently featured.

Thank you Joan, for all your hard work and dedication and for your generosity in donating these books to the Associa-tion. We will be making the books available to members for loan over the coming months.
