The Scent of a Memory

The scent of a memory – think about that phrase for just a moment – the scent of a memory - something long since past, that comes unbidden to the forefront of our mind. Marcel Proust writes “When nothing else subsists from the past, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long time, like souls bearing resiliently, on tiny and almost impalpable drops of their essence, the immense edifi ce of memory.”

There are those scents that reach far back into time, that still have a powerful emotional hold on me. A certain perfume will transport me back to a time when Sandy and I fi rst dated. The smell of baby powder crashes over me when I remember holding my newborn daughters.

There are scents within a worship space that bring memories fl ooding back to my mind: the smell of beeswax reminds me of replacing the candles. The musty smell of old hymnals – long in need of replacing, but the admonition that “they’re still good enough” kept them in the rack on the back of the pew.

The lingering aroma of the thurible, a smell we rarely catch wiff of any more, can take me to those high church services that carried so much import and pomp. The smell of a campfi re can bring me back to worship at camp when I was even younger.

And more specifi cally, the smell of anointing oil – that mixture of, I don’t know what, frankincense and olive oil, it carries me to the day when I watched as my wife and daughters were baptized into the family of God – and were anointed – a reminder of a time when Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.

Anointing is a gift – one that carries with it extreme signifi cance and a heavenly aroma – an aroma that engulfs us much like the Spirit that it signifi es.

It isn’t the sound of the water tinkling into the font as my wife and children each took their turn, that fl oods my mind with those memories … It is the smell of the oil, and those words “… child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever” that make my eyes fi ll with tears of joy. It is an aroma that embedded itself on my mind as I hugged and kissed each of them.

At the time of our baptism, the pastor anoints us – seals us in the love of God – as in the Song of Solomon – “Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fi erce as the grave. Its fl ashes are fl ashes of fi re, a raging fl ame. It is the Flame of God’s spirit burning deeply within us.”

At our baptisms, we are anointed in fragrant oil. That anointing, that often overlooked or forgotten part of the liturgy, ties us to the prophets and priests of God. Just as Elijah anointed Elisha to be the prophet – to speak God’s word, we too are called through the Holy Spirit to be that prophetic voice – to be the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

When we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit then fi lls our lives like a beautiful fragrance – a fragrance not unlike when Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The bible paints an aromatic picture of a house that was fi lled with the fragrance of the perfume. It is just that way with us - our lives are fi lled with the Spirit and the fragrance of God’s actions within our lives brings us comfort, trust and to faith.

Blessings,Pr. Doug

Tornado Baskets - Joplin, MO

We were able to send 3 full baskets to Joplin, MO to help the tornado victims.

Thank you to all who participated in this kind and generous gift of giving.

Five kernels The Plymouth Pilgrims celebrated the fi rst Thanksgiving Day in fall 1621, but by the next May, their food supply was depleted. The harvest of 1622 was a failure, and the Pilgrims often lived for days on just a few kernels of corn. Amid a drought in 1623, the people sought divine intervention. After praying for nine hours on a hot July day, they were blessed with a two-week rainfall. Edward Winslow wrote, “It was hard to say whether our withered corn or drooping affections were most quickened and revived.” The Pilgrims never went hungry again. Start a Thanksgiving tradition by placing fi ve kernels of corn at each place setting. Point out a blessing that each kernel represents. For example:

1. God loves us. 2. God provides for all our needs. 3. God gives us friends, just as the Indians befriended the Pilgrims. 4. God hears and answers our prayers. 5. God is preparing a place for us in heaven.

Then have family members share fi ve things for which they’re grateful.

HAPPY PUMPKIN

‘HAPPY FALL TO YOU’

From one pumpkin to another!!!!!!!

A woman was asked by a coworker, ‘What is it like to be a Christian?’

The coworker replied, ‘It is like being a pumpkin.’

‘God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.

He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.’

This was passed on to me by another pumpkin. Now it’s your turn to pass it to other pumpkins.

I liked this enough to send it to all the pumpkins in my patch.

Cornucopia

Bible Quiz? ?? ? ?

Answers: D (See 2 Timothy 3:16-17.)

Some churches observe National Bible Week in November. According to 2 Timothy, which of the following are ways that God intends for us to use Scripture?

A. Teaching and training in righteousness B. Equipping God’s children for good works C. Reproof and correction D. All of the above

Cornucopia, a Greek word meaning “horn of plenty,” has origins in Greek mythology. But the cornucopia became a religious symbol and was even stamped on Jewish coins. Overfl owing horns, now common as Thanksgiving centerpieces, came to symbolize abundance and blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving

Prayer of thanksgiving

“I have never understood why anyone would roast the turkey and shuck the clams and crisp the croutons and shell the peas and candy the sweet potatoes and compote the cran- berries and bake the pies and clear the table and wash the dishes and fall into bed exhausted when they could just as easily sit back and enjoy a hamburger or a pork sandwich.”

- The Turkey

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefi ts –– who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfi es you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalm 103:2-5, NRSV

The psalmist’s all-encompassing list is a good example of all the gifts of God we should gratefully acknowledge. Personalize this ancient prayer by pondering your own experiences of God’s forgiveness, healing, redemption, love, mercy and satisfaction of your daily needs.
