We caught up with John Catucci, host of Food Network’s hit show, You Gotta Eat Here!, while he was in town shooting for an upcoming episode at 850 Degrees Pizzeria on Lake Shore at Thirtieth.

The show travels across Canada and beyond in search of the most delicious, must-try food. Naturally, it made a stop in South Etobicoke.

With the show’s busy travel schedule, Catucci was happy to be back in his hometown. “We just got back from Italy after shooting there for three weeks,” he jokes. “And now we’re eating pizza again!”

We sat down with Catucci on the show’s second day of filming, which means the comfort food aficionado had ample opportunity

to sample the well-conceived menu.

“850 is taking classical Italian and adding a little Canadiana into the mix,” explains Catucci. True to form, pizza options include locally inspired names like the ‘David Bolland’ and ‘Long Branch’.

His favourite, the ‘Oh Canada’, is a glorious combination of Cana-dian maple back bacon, free run organic eggs, fior di latte cheese, and tomato sauce.

“My Dad used to put a poached egg in his tomato sauce,” Catucci recounts. “So I grew up with that egg and tomato flavour combina-tion.”

Compliments to the Chef. Catucci was exceedingly impressed by

owner and Chef Chris Beard’s use of fresh ingredients. “It’s so im-portant to know where your food comes from and Chris is committed to sourcing food locally,” Catucci attests. “His menu is very communi-ty-based. Even the beers are local.”

It was said best by one of the guests during the show’s taping: “You can taste the love in the pizza!”

We couldn’t agree more.

Welcome to the mobile version of our Fall edition. It’s been a busy month since we published the ELP’s first edition in late September. I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my sincerest thanks to our readers, contributors, and ad partners. It’s a pleasure to have met and be working with so many like-minded individuals in South Etobicoke.

This month we feature the filming of Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here! at 850 Degrees Pizzeria in Long Branch. We interviewed the show’s host, John Catucci, who gave us a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the hit TV show.

I’m also pleased to announce that we’ve added a new Health & Wellness cate-gory to the magazine. We’ll be collab-orating with our friends at Branch Yoga & Wellness to bring you insightful and inspiring content every month.

One of the things I love most about my job is the opportunity to highlight positive contributions to our commu-nity. In this edition, we acknowledge the great work being done by the volunteers at the Etobicoke Humane Society.

Lastly, we profile local business owner, Melodee Matthews, of Bone Appetit Long Branch. She shares her thoughts on community and what inspired her to open a pet boutique on Lake Shore. Thanks to all of you who are now fol-lowing us on social media. Check out our print edition above for a slightly different look at this month’s content.

Branch Yoga & Wellness Co-Owners, Marlene Sammy & Karey Emmett

Just over a year ago, when three like-minded spirits serendipitously came together to share their dreams of cre-ating a space for wellness, health and healing, Branch Yoga & Wellness was born. What started as a small studio in the basement of a local restaurant soon grew into a 3,000 sf centre for Long Branch community members to move, stretch, connect, and breathe. With the edition of the Soul Spa for blissful facials and holistic massage, and the soon-to-be Branch Bar for healthy juices and snacks, Branch Yoga & Wellness is a one-stop shop for balance and wellbe-ing in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore neighbourhood.

Branch Yoga has been recognized for its warm and friendly atmosphere and positive, infectious energy. Catering to beginners as well as experienced prac-titioners, Branch Yoga offers a variety of classes such as Restorative, Yoga Basics, Vinyasa Flow, and Aerial Yoga. Seeking to include and address the wellness needs of the diverse Etobicoke-Lake-shore community, students span several generations from infants in Mom & Baby Yoga to senior practitioners 65+, and everyone in between!

“Our mission has always been to unite the community through well-being practices, but it’s so much more than that,” says Karey Emmett, yoga teacher and studio co-owner. “We are a safe space for individuals to connect to their highest selves and fulfill their dreams.”

Branch Yoga & Wellness often donates to local projects and partici-pates in raising money for causes such as Ride to Conquer Cancer, the Etobi-coke Humane Society, and the Syrian Migrant Crisis.

Branch Yoga is thrilled to be partnering with the Etobicoke - Lakeshore Press to bring you local wellness news! We look forward to co-creating a vibrant, healthy community and hope to meet you on the mat soon! Marlene Sammy is a mindful vinyasa yogi who has been practicing grace and expansion through movement for over 10 years. Her background in dance and love for all things yoga drew her to Aerial Yoga which she joyfully teaches to groups of all ages. When not in the ham-mock or flowing on the mat, you can find Marlene giving relaxing Thai massages, making green smoothies, or practicing acro yoga with her hubby.

The Etobicoke - Lakeshore Press is proud to support the fine work being done by our friends at the Etobicoke Humane Society. As a volunteer-run independent shelter, the Etobicoke Hu-mane Society relies solely on donations to operate.

Fresh off the heels of a successful Asana for Animals fundraising event held at Branch Yoga & Wellness and supported by local pet boutique, Bone Appetit Long Branch, Long Branch Animal Clinic and My Petropolis, the Etobicoke Hu-mane Society is rolling into November with new initiatives to raise awareness and funds.

Check their website for upcoming events. If you’re able, we encourage you to make a donation, volunteer your time, or adopt a dog or cat. If you’ve already adopted a pet from the Etobicoke Humane Society, we’d love to share your story with our readers.

For fundraising and donation inquiries, please contact Mark Fimio, Director of Events & Fundraising at [email protected].

PROFILEMELODEE MATTHEWS

Melodee Matthews with Coco & Chanel

Melodee is applying her expertise in retail and customer service at Bone Appetit Long Branch which opened in July 2015.

She credits her love for pets and the fact that she’s a Long Branch resident for the inspiration to open the well-appoint-ed pet boutique on Lake Shore near Thirtieth. A well-timed move given the neighbourhood’s recent and projected growth.

As a volunteer and active member of the local business improvement associ-ation, Melodee believes that participa-tion is the key to a better community.

According to her, “If you want your community to grow, you’ve got to get involved in helping it grow.”
