First Edition Dear Friends: Late last December, Lori and I had the joy of being with our youngest daughter, Leah Bressler and her husband Rob, for the birth of our twin grandchil-dren, Marion and Will. We traveled to Chicago, Illi-nois for the big event. Ever since, Lori has been a hands-on grandma and a satellite wife!

Our joy continued with their move to Durham in late June for con-tinuation of Leah’s medical training, and our joy was further heightened with Marion and Will’s baptisms here in our sanctuary last month. (I was going to project pictures of them on the sanctuary wall that Sunday, Oc-tober 15th, but I thought that might be a bit over the top even for a pastor/grandparent.) As I held each child in my arms, I thought about how grateful I was for the gift of these new lives, and not a bit too proud as Whitney and I serenaded the congregation with each child around the sanctuary. I also thought about all the joy that both our daughters have given us over the years and the opportunities that await both Abigail and Leah, their family and perhaps in due time, families.

One word says it all: gratitude.

A birth, a new home, a job, a special friend, a sunset, a trip, a new insight, a support group or an experience in worship can all stir within us a moment of gratitude. We discover joy in living in the world that God has made. We do not create ourselves. We stand on the shoulders of oth-ers. We are not self-made people. God has blessed each one of us with many gifts, talents and opportunities. Even when we look at what we have accomplished, we realize that our accomplishments arise for the en-couragement of others, the gifts that we have been given, unexpected op-portunities and the sustaining love of God. The Psalmist declares, “O give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good; for God’s steadfast love endures forever “(107:1).

The question becomes, “How do I express my gratitude to God?” Gratitude leads us to live a life of generosity – being generous with our time, our resources and our love. I find that being around people who hold generous attitudes and ideas enlarges my life and inspires a gener-ous spirit in me.

The following is a digest of the Stated Meeting of the Session on October 10, 2017—

• Worship attendance for September 2017 averaged 286; • August 2016 attendance averaged 294; average Sunday School attendance for September 2017

was 81. • The City of New Bern is no longer offering the parking lot on New Street across from the church

for sale. • The Lord’s Supper will next be served on All Saints Observance Sunday, November 1. • The November 8 Fellowship dinner will have the Briley -Lathan cooking team offering ribs,

Brunswick stew, slaw, and corn bread. • The Session endorsed the Presbytery’s recommendation that Nancy Chiles fulfill the Presby-

tery’s Elder Quota at the 2018 PCUSA General Assembly in St. Louis. Churches in New Hope Presbytery provide Elders on a rotational basis. We are not certain, but believe our last repre-sentative was Dr. Francis P. King.

• Approved the addition of Samar Badwan, a member and officer of ai-Masjid Islamic Center and Mosque in Greenville, to serve as a member of the Rothermel Board.

• Pictorial Directories are expected in November. A total of 271 photographs were made —245 were family groups.

• Habitat for Humanity just completed its sixty-second house. Plans are to build four houses in 2018 — twice the annual number.

• The questionnaire about having a single worship service during the summer months received 164 “yes” responses and 10 “no”’s. Several said their yes votes were predicated on having Sun-day School. The Worship Commission is considering this concept.

• Approved the baptism of Audrey Puih on October 8. She is the daughter of Noan Kpuih and Ayiu Puih.

Pastor’s message cont’d from cover page

perience the joy of Christian friendship and fellowship, I want to invite others to join with me in experiencing these same blessings. Gratitude opens our minds, hearts and hands. Gratitude leads us to live with a sense of spiritual and material abundance that we are eager to share. The old song still rings true: When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed, When you are dis-couraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done. Gratitude helps me put my troubles into a larger frame. Gratitude enables me to forget old wounds, mend broken fences and accept others whose viewpoints and ways of doing things may be different from my own. Gratitude opens the door to the enlarging Spirit of God in each one of us.

grace & peace, Bill

I hope that many of you attended the Rocky Mount Chamber Choir concert on October 8. It was a wonderful concert, and a great Homecoming for Jim Smith, (the director) son of our former minister Murphy Smith. I want to thank all of you who sent condolences on the death of my mother, Barbara Kerr of Clinton, NC. Many members of the choir, staff and friends attended her memorial service on October 12, and it was a very fitting service—full of music and memories of a beautiful person. Those who sent cards—please know how much they meant to me—that you were holding our family in your prayers as we go through this grief-filled time. We have a worship service that you won’t want to miss. On Sunday, November 5, we will have a “kirkin’ (Blessing) of the Tartans” or Blessing of the Families. There will be a bagpiper, and a special anthem with a Celtic flair, accompanied by Violin and drum. So wear your tartan or bring something that represents your heritage. Rehearsals for Handel’s Messiah begin Monday November 6 at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary of Centenary UMC. This is the 35th performance, and continues to be a community favorite. We perform with Conductor James Ogle and members of the North Carolina Symphony. If you would like to be in the chorus, there are no auditions, but you need your own G. Schirmer score, available at Fuller Music on Trent Road. The performance will be on Monday, December 11. Yours in Christ, Pat Kerr Rowlett

ADULT SPRING RETREAT. Our annual spring retreat for adults will be on April 13 – 15, 2018 at St. Francis Springs Prayer Center. This is a fun weekend for individuals and couples to slow down, relax in the natural beauty of a 140 acre sanctuary, and listen contemplatively for the flow of God’s Spirit in our lives. St. Francis Springs is an easy-to-reach re-treat center 40 miles north of Greensboro, NC, with comfortable accommodations and good food. It has become popular with our congregation as we grow more mindful of Christ’s presence in our lives. Traveling by our church bus, we will stop on the way at Timberlake Earth Sanctuary for lunch and a tour. Now is the time to reserve your place with a “Letter of Intent” which is available at the Receptionist’s Desk in the Ministry Center or on our web page. For more information contact Lloyd Griffith. New Opportunity to share in the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper will be offered on the 4th Wednesday of each month during our contemplative worship service. This half-hour service begins at 5:15 pm in the Chapel. Lloyd Griffith Trail Guide

The festival sale is sponsored by Presbyterian Women, in cooperation with other groups and indi-viduals in the church, as a mission/outreach project. If you can help at the festival on Saturday and/or Sunday (check-out and sales floor personnel are especially needed on both days), please call Sally Maestripieri at 637-6590 and leave a message. New Hope Presbytery Middle School Retreat by Daewon

Janet Bryan and Daewon went with four middle school girls to the an-nual New Hope Presbytery Middle School Retreat at Camp Don Lee the first weekend in October. The keynote speaker shared messages about how we need second sight—a way for us to have various perspectives as we look to and understand God. We need to be open to seeing from vari-ous perspectives and be opened to understanding how people may have different views of God than we do. It was the first retreat experience for our girls and they loved learning energizers, singing praise songs, and meeting other middle school youth from various other churches in our presbytery. Adults likewise were able to meet new adult leaders of the presbytery and talk about youth ministries at various congregations. As the pictures show, we had a fun and wonderful time!

Christmas Wreaths will arrive between November 28 and December 1 Thank you to those who purchased a wreath for this year’s Fundraiser! The wreaths will arrive between Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. Please watch for the announcement in the Sunday insert. All monies raised will go toward supporting a local organiza-tion in town and help pay for youth sum-mer mission trip/conference.

Outreach Commission

COMING SOON! The Outreach Commission Presents…just in time for your holiday

shopping…GIFTS FROM THE HEART!!

The Outreach Commission is delighted to present three new program offerings for our “Gifts From The Heart” program. This year, our church will be supporting Reviving Lives Ministry, Craven County Disaster Assistance Alliance and Heeling Our World Ministries. (See a brief description below).

Brochures, Forms and Gift Cards are available now, and throughout the year, in the Church Office and will also be offered at a special table set up either outside in the courtyard or next to the nursery, in between ser-vices or after church, on December 3rd, December 10th and December 17th. Cards are now available for a minimum donation of $10 for adults, and $5 for a children's gift card and make perfect holiday gifts for the teacher, caregiver, student or anyone else on your list that has 'everything'...as so many of us do! Craven County Disaster Recovery Alliance The Mission of the Craven County Disaster Recovery Alliance is to strengthen area wide disaster coordination through information sharing, simplifying the access to available resources for individuals and families, and jointly resolving cases with unmet needs from disasters. CCDRA recently formed as a long term disaster recovery alliance in the after-math of Hurricane Matthew in 2016. The board is comprised of individuals from all walks of life from Craven County. CCDRA operates an all-volunteer staff including board members which allows 100% of funding to go directly to the needed source for recovery.

Heeling Our World teaches Americans of all ages about the plight of impoverished barefoot children and gives us an avenue for advocacy. The group makes a simple shoe called a KLEM. This is the same shoe that we are teaching African mothers to make. Faith based organizations can participate in the project by hosting KLEM making events. These support the establishment of cottage industries for shoe- making throughout Africa. “Heeling Our World” educates and empowers students and adults in the U.S. and turns them into better global citizens.

Reviving Lives Ministry provides clean, sober, substance-free residential environments for local men and women dealing with the devastating consequences of substance abuse through a faith based, 12 step re-covery program. The cost of addiction to these men and women, their families, friends, and the community at large is immeasurable. These expenses are not only financial. There are also physical, emotional, and spiritual costs involved. With the support of First Presbyterian, New Bern and other local contributors, RLM helps these people become positive, self-sufficient, and productive members of OUR community.

On October 7, 2017, several members of First Presbyterian Church gathered with other churches and volunteers to complete the Backpack Blessings build for the first semester of school. With the help of many dedicated volunteers, both young and old, the build was an overwhelming success. Af-ter the build, twenty five bins were loaded into a trailer and pickup truck and were de-livered to Bangert Elementary School. A huge thanks is owed to all of those who participated. If you’d like to join us for the next build, keep your eyes out for upcoming announcements or con-tact Sarah Moeller ([email protected]) or Stacey Griffith ([email protected]).
