At the last teams race I contested, I was totally out of my depth and I thought Casey Fields would be the ideal setting to seek some form of redemption.

A strong Croydon CycleWorks/ Pickgame plan became obvious early with Dave de Pedro and Tom Leaper attacking the bunch while they protected Haydn Bradbury, the series leader & Andrew Mapstone for the bunch sprint.

With Phil taking a breather, I had to go with Tom and not long after that he flicked the elbow and had me on the front. This was definitely not in the plan and thankfully it wasn’t for too long. Soon after, I resumed my position near the rear of the bunch.

The pace was solid and when you add in a sequence of surge & recovery sets, it was not a great surprise that I only lasted 30 minutes. The winning break of Frank Nyhuis, Roy Clark (Bikeforce) and Haydn was established, which I assume was a counter attack on a Phil Smith and Dave de Pedro effort, as they were now dangling off the main bunch losing ground quickly.

By this stage I was rolling around with Lawrence Lee (BikeGearNow) with Phil & Dave not that far ahead. We upped our pace a bit and after around 3 laps it looked like we were going to catch them. However Phil sensed the main bunch had slowed, which triggered him into action and the gap which took us three laps to claw back was ripped away from us in one.

Phil and Dave did eventually rejoin the main bunch while Lawrence & I were lapped by Frank, Haydn & Roy.

Haydn was too good in the sprint with Roy rolling over 2nd and Frank 3rd.

Haydn’s also picked up the best rider for the series. .

With the Croydon Cycles Works/Pick-a-Part team winning the series.

While it was another humbling DNF for me, I am still happy that my fitness is on the improve and heading in the right direction. Hopefully the Adriatic boys are willing to take another chance on me.

Big thanks to Nigel Kimber for running the team race series & for EVCC for supporting the concept.

E Grade (Brian Farrell) It was a lovely day, about 26 deg C with a fresh breeze; perfect for a bike race. Only 8 in E grade so nowhere to hide. It all started at a gentleman's pace until Adrian started his attacks then Ronnie trying to get away and then me having a go. That was how the day went, with Peter just watching and waiting for the sprint. The pace gradually picked up as the race went on. At the bell we had secured Adrian on the front and he was stuck there where we could watch him. So, down the straight and Peter took off and with little effort he won the sprint. He will keep. We are at Yarra Glen in a few weeks time and Peter doesn't like the hills. Results Casey Fields 2nd Nov 2013
