The Liberty LeaderChristmas Parade & Tree Lighting to be Held in Liberty You’re invited to an afternoon of “Old Time” Christmas nostalgia in Historic Downtown Liberty on Saturday, December 6th. It will be an afternoon of fun and surprises for the young and the young at heart. The annual Liberty Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade will kick off the festivities. The Parade will be held from 2:30pm-3:30 pm. Christmas floats, trailers, high school bands, vintage cars, fire trucks, a variety of parade entries (and of course Santa) will be on display as they travel along the parade route. The parade will have a more direct and efficient route this year along Greensboro St. It will start at the old Fidelity Bank and end at Dollar General. No Candy will be thrown from floats or vehicles but will be carefully distributed by individuals who walk alongside of the parade entries. The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade will be Ms. Kaffy Kivett-Reynolds ; the director of the Reitzel Senior Center here in Liberty and also Marie Warren, Assist Director. Holiday festivities will continue after the parade in the downtown area. Please join us for our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Festival between 4-6 pm. In the “Spirit of Christmas” Local businesses, Churches, Civic organizations and Individuals join together to spread “Christmas Cheer”. FREE items are shared to make this day special: popcorn, cookies, hotdogs, hot chocolate, coffee, water and more. From 4-6pm., kids can visit with Santa and have a FREE photo taken. A street stage will be set up; during this time, traditional and contemporary Christmas carols will be performed by a variety of local musicians. The Grand Finale of the evening will be at 5:30 pm when the parade’s Grand Marshal flips the switch to light up the Christmas tree in Downtown Liberty. Come join us in song around the tree up until 6:00pm. We look forward to seeing you in Liberty. Merry Christmas from the Liberty Chamber of Commerce! Sauce
So Who Is Behind This Sauce?Well I had the pleasure to meet John Burwell which is the son of Ellen Burwell and grandson of Nancy an dPaul “Pulley” Obriant of Liberty. You see the family tree means a lot to this BBQ sauce since it is the secret recipe of Paul “Pulley” O’Briant. For over 35 years ago is when John’s grandfather started making the BBQ from scratch that so many sought after. From Church events to family and friends, they all called upon him for that great sauce. John is excited to be carry on a family legacy with this sauce. John informed me he started off reproducing his Pulley’s sauce in Rockingham but now has moved the operation to the Liberty Home Place just down near Melancton. John did not like the field of work he was in and with support from family, they encourage him to follow his dream and start producing the BBQ sauce. So in June of 2014 he began his dream. You can find the sauce locally at Gracies Veggie Box near Dollar General in Liberty, Town N Country Meat Market in Greensboro, Maston Crutchfield in Kernersville and also in the Downtown Greensboro Farmers Market. Several even like the sauce to be used as a salad dressing. He plans to expand to quart and half gallon size also. He will even to special orders upon request. You can see in ad on how to reach him. Great legacy!!!

Barbershops Merge Into OneSo what is going on at Liberty Barbershop in downtown Liberty. Well there is a lot. First of all we are wishing former barber, Brian Riggs good luck, he is moving on to a full time job at UPS. Don’t worry Liberty, he will be stopping in every so often as his job allows. So now you are thinking, who's taking over. Well, his brother, Bill Riggs is the new owner a n d b a r b e r f o r t h e L i b e r t y Barbershop. You may have already seen another new face there and that would Brian and Bills father that fills in on occasion. Bill is not new to the business, wi th over 25 years experience and operating Bill’s Barbershop in Climax. Bill is closing down the Climax shop to combine it with the Liberty Barbershop. Bill wanted to tell all the people from the Climax shop thanks for all the patronage and do not hesitate to come on down to Liberty to keep the clips a coming. Downtown Liberty welcomes the Riggs family to our great little town. Stop in and tell Bill hello.

Final Third Thursday Block Party A Huge Success The session came to an end of this years Third Thursday Chamber block parties in October. As a tradition, the session ends up with local favorites, The Royal Harmonizers packing the house. Thanks to Ron and Betty Staley for opening the doors of the Liberty Showcase, the group and visitors got to sit in a warm cozy atmosphere and soak up the sounds of this group. Over 150 people showed up to this event. The group had the place swaying in there seats while at intermission folks enjoyed conversation, fresher popcorn and refreshing drinks from the concession stand. A special thanks goes out to chamber board member, Tabitha Stewart Schenkel that was the driving force behind all the months of great acts. The chamber is looking forward to another great season in 2015. Another great item was that your admission to the show was can food for the Liberty Assoc of Churches Food Bank. A total of 224 can foods and $75 in donation was received that night. Thank you for all that made this great night possible. Patterson Cottage Museum Corner -Brenda Heindl, Committee Member A warm note of thanks to those visitors who braved the weather this past Saturday, November 1 for the Heritage Festival at the Patterson Cottage. We are especially grateful to the vendors and demonstrating crafts people who participated in the Town Hall: CharMar Alpaca Farm, Barn Door Nursery and Produce, Larry Kreiser who makes long leaf pine needle baskets, and snacks and refreshments were brought by the Harmon’s of Julian. This year we were happy to have the Burlington Carousel Quilt Guild with us to show off their own antique quilts and demonstrate sewing techniques. We’ll hope for better weather next year and that you may brave whatever comes to join us! Some exciting new additions to the collection have been recently donated. From the collection of Ila Allred we received a copy of the commencement program from the graduating class of 1930 at Liberty High School. Dwight Maxwell donated a fantastic never-used 1942 calendar from the Liberty Chair Company, and from the collection of Robert and Sallie Ward we received a 1976 quilt made by the First Baptist Church. The red, white, and blue quilt was a fundraiser and community members paid to have their names stitched on the quilt. It was sold at a silent auction and we were told that Robert Ward bid on the quilt because his wife Sallie was painting a room in her house red, white, and blue. We are also excited to announce that we have started a fundraising campaign to support the outreach efforts of the museum, conservation and protection of the collections, and preservation of the Patterson Cottage. Become a Friend of the Patterson Cottage and support your community. E-mail [email protected] to receive a form or stop by the Liberty Town Hall to pick one up. Help preserve your community through its history! We are closed until May of next year, but please contactus if you would like to visit the museum in the coming months. Fogleman/ Shoffner Reunion"The Fogleman and Shoffner Descendants Family Reunion held at Low's Lutheran Church on Sat., Oct. 18, was a huge success! At least 130 descendants of George Fogleman and his sister, Anna Margaretha (Vogelmann) Shoffner, attended the event. Dr. Aaron Fogleman, professor of History at Northern Illinois University, presented "From Wurttemberg to Alamance: The Origins of the Fogleman and Shoffner Families" following an ancestral tour and lunch. The Vogelmanns and Schafferts met in an agricultural community now called Friedrichsruhe in northern Wurttemberg (Germany). George and brother, Michael, arrive in PA in 1751, and sister, Anna Margaretha and her family arrive in NC ca. 1770.” Check out the great picture of the turn out below.

Local Church Serves By“Pig Out” Free BBQ EventLast month, Bethany Baptist Church at 7632 Shiloh Road in Julian served home cooked BBQ that we are use to this time of the year. However, they did the unusual, it was FREE. As you pulled up you saw the men working around the outdoor cooker and chopping BBQ as the ladies and kids worked inside preparing the eat in or take out plates with all the fixings. Event down to drinks and homemade deserts. I asked them their reason and they stated, “ Our purpose was to serve our community by providing a free meal to as many people as possible. We were able to meet several people in the area that we didn't know. We actually served 100 plates.” Not only did they serve free BBQ, they gave away free Bibles to many. They started on Friday at 7pm preparing for the Saturday Pig Out Event. Many spent the night at the church having a cookout and great fellowship. They added, “We believe God blessed us greatly with an opportunity to show HIS love. We plan to do something like this annually. Bethany has a new interim Pastor, Ray Backer and wife, Carrie since Oct. 5th. If you would like to visit this church, they meet Sundays at 9:45am for Sunday School, 11am worship and 6pm for Bible Study. Also on Friday night they have family movie nights at 7pm. They are also serving by giving things away during Liberty Christmas Tree Lighting Festival from 4 to 6pm on Sat Dec 6.
Fourteen Students Chosen for RCC Student Leadership Academy Fourteen students have been chosen for Randolph Community College’s eighth annual Student Leadership Academy based on a competitive process that considered leadership experience, leadership potential, and a letter of reference from a faculty member. The group includes 12 traditional RCC students and two Randolph Early College High School students. The participants completed their first session on Saturday, Sept. 27, which included team-building exercises led by Jeremy Jackson, associate director of camp operations at Camp Caraway, and his wife, Michelle; and a presentation by RCC President Robert S. Shackleford on the topic “What is Leadership.” A second session scheduled for Oct. 9 will include a presentation on group dynamics by Dr. Joanne Buck, department chair for English and Humanities at Guilford Technical Community College; and a session on Servant Leadership by Dr. J.W. Kelley, RCC vice president for student services. In upcoming sessions, the students will learn about personality t y p e s a n d l e a d e r s h i p s t y l e s ; communica t ion on soc ia l med ia ; situational leadership; 360 degree leadership; and leadership and ethical dilemmas. Students will also participate in a student leadership project. A graduation ceremony will be held in March, at which the students will present the outcome of their projects. This year ’s Student Leadership Academy is sponsored by Dr. Stuart B. Fountain and Dr. Alan S. Luria through the RCC Foundation.

JOBSCongratulationsMore Great From Our Area Shannon Langley of Staley, Daughter of Stephanie and Greg Langley, won Grand Champion in NC and SC State Fairs. Great job. Pictured with Shannon is Ms Woodent. I am proud to call this area home. Every time I turn around I see more and more talent that stems from these local communities.
Elections Brings Several OutFrom Liberty To Ramseur, numerous politicians made visits to our fair towns. I believe they have finally realized that small towns carry more votes than they realize. In addition, numerous talk between each other that carries more clout than a tv commercial. Clay Aiken is pictured hear with Liberty’s music talent Keith Bartell. Clay’s bus rolled into both towns to meet and great. In additions both parties held public meetings where you could meet and talk to the candidates. The NCAAP was also at St Stephens this past month to encourage voting. People get frustrated with all this , but we have to realize each votes matters. We complain about government, but do we do
our part by voting, learning the past votes and actions the candidates have done. We have not room to complain if we do not do our part. It even goes to local city and county government, the monthly meetins from town council, county meeting, school board meeting and so on, are all open to the public. They want to hear your thoughts. Make a point to attend. Make a point to talk to your elected officials. It is our freedom to do so.

The Better Question Is“What Don’t We Do!”
MORGAN SHAFLEY EARNS GIRL SCOUTS’ HIGHEST HONORGirl Scout Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont is pleased to announce that Morgan Shafley, Liberty, has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Her project focused on the need to provide comfortable caps to patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or other illness. Shafley, daughter of Lance and Cindy and a member of Troop 40993, worked in partnership with her project advisor, Debbie Woodruff and other community volunteers to make, collect and donate chemo caps to Wesley Long Cancer Center. More than a 145 chemo caps were donated. Shafley also created a booklet to share with other Girl Scout troops, who can continue to support this project with additional donations or patterns for easy sew or no-sew hats. By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, Shafley has become a community leader. Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart.“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement, and this young woman exemplifies leadership in all its forms,” said Marcia Cole, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont. “She saw a need in her community and took action. Her extraordinary dedication, perseverance and leadership, is making the world a better place."
Run With A Purpose Success Run with Purpose’s fundraiser for NC Baptist Children’s Home was a SUCCESS! Together we raised $1,435.00! A HUGE THANK YOU TO THIS YEAR’S SPONSORS : FREEDOM FAMILY CHURCH, LIBERTY ADVISORS, CGT PHOTOGRAPHY, QUALITY VENEER CO., SOUTHERN ENTERTAINMENT,BARNEY & MARY CAMPBELL’S BODY SHOP, CLIFFORD W. ESTES CO., HAND SPEECH THERAPY, LIBERTY LEADER NEWSPAPER, RISEN RADIO.FM, AND FFC’S ELEVATION STATION! A very special thank you to those of you who made personal donations, prayers, and race-day support. The large check was presented this week by Don Schenkel, RWP’s Greensboro Marathon runner, at FFC’s 10:30 Worship Service to Mrs Karen Slate, a representative from NC Baptist Children’s Homes. She gave a short presentation on how their ministries continue to bring hope and healing to children and families in crisis by the help of God and supporters like those who helped with the RWP fundraiser. Don shared part of his testimony, his time and placement in the marathon race, and what he learned throughout his journey of starting the Run With Purpose Foundation. Don finished 125th overall out of 280 runners and 14th in his age group; a race time of 4 hours and 35 minutes. Simply put, He said running this race reminded him of how hard this life is, that there will be times of hills and valleys, but the most important thing is that “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me “ (Philippians 4:13) and “…with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 9:26)
