NOVEMBER meetingGerrit Lotz really wowed our members when he joined us at the November meeting and shared with us some of his many spectacular Bird images. Gerrit is a true master of this genre and his images are quite simply breathtaking. Although Gerrit attributes much of his success to “luck” Tim Driman was very quick to point out that L-U-C-K is infact an acronym for Labour Under Controlled Knowledge. Gerrit shared with us some of his knowledge about bird behaviour along with the camera settings used to achieve his crisp, sharp, colourful and jaw droppingly beautiful bird shots. Thank you Gerrit for joining us at our November meeting. Not only did you inspire us but you totally blew us away... !

SET SUBJECT WINNER This month Jo-Anne Paton scooped the final Set Subject Trophy of the year. The winning image for the Eyes are Beautiful set subject was shot at this months outing to the Ndlondlo Reptile Park. Well done Jo-Anne!

... and that brings us to the end of our 2016 Set Subject List. I cannot believe we have worked our way through our entire list once more! The much anticipated 2017 Set Subject list will be announced next month at the December Best of the Year Awards. Watch this spot!

MONThLY ENTRIESOur numbers were down this month... we had a total of just 52 photographs entered into the November competition. Only 3 images received COM Awards, 33 images received Gold Awards, and there were 16 Silver Awards and 0 Bronze.

JUdGINGI was once again reminded just how talented the members of the Ballito Photo Club really are. We have some fantastically talented and knowledgeable members as part of the club and we are fortunate to have great mentorship from some of our senior photographers. Jayson Naidoo did a truly excellent job delivering the crit at our November meeting and I really do hope everyone listened carefully to his comments as they were very insightful.

COMPETITION RULES

• All photographs must have been entered into monthly Ballito Photo Club competitions during the 2016 competition year January - November.• Only the excursion photograph can be a first time submission but the submitted image needs to have been taken at an official outing in 2016.• No NATURE images may be entered into the OPEN SECTION.

• If you have recropped or altered an image post judging the revised image is acceptable provided it is essentially the original image and has NOT been reshot.• Not more than 2 entries per Category may be submitted. i.e. Nature, Open, Monochrome, Set Subject, Excursion.• All entries must be submitted to the Club Competition Steward via Photo Vault before the stipulated deadline of Saturday, 12 November 2016.• A panel of judges will be nominated to judge and award prizes. Alternatively an members vote scoring system will be used.• Most Improved Photographer will be awarded by the Chairperson.• Final Salon and Club Points accumulated for the year will be totalled by the competition steward prior to the Awards Ceremony and awarded on the evening.

BALLITO PHOTO CLUB: BEST OF ThE YEAR AWARdS

Please join us for some light snacks and a glass of wine before starting with our Annual Best of the Year Awards on Tuesday, 6:30 for 7pm on 6 december.

The competition will close on Saturday, 12 November 2016. Please be sure to get your entries in before the deadline. Members are to please select and submit their two Best Images from the year into each category. The categories are as follows Nature, Open, Mono, Set Subject, Excursion. The entries will be judged independently and the results announced at the DECEMBER final meeting of the year.

Depending on sponsorship prizes will be awarded to the winning image / photographer in each category Junior and Senior. Certificates for 2nd and 3rd place in all categories will also be awarded. Nominations for the Club Choice Award for the favourite photograph as voted by our members will take place on the evening.

The judging will be done by independent judges.

With the exception of the excursion photo entries ALL PhOTOGRAPhS MUST hAVE BEEN ENTEREd PREVIOUSLY ANd BEEN JUdGEd at the monthly Ballito Photo Club competitions during the 2016 competition year from January 2016 up to and including November 2016.

ALL Current Committee Members are requested to please attend this meeting:Bebhinn Spoors, Theo Landman, Helen Bauermeister, Jayson Naidoo, Jill Parton, Stephen Gore and Jo-Anne Paton (who has filled Claudes shoes since his move to the UK).

Planning for 2017 has begun. This will be a mini planning session as we review the past year and put forward a few suggestions before we move into the new year. There are a few general items which have cropped up over the past couple of months which need to be discussed and addressed. I would really like to brainstorm and initiate the planning of a Portrait Shoot which needs to happen in the first couple of months of 2017. We also need to finalise an inspirational and challenging NEW Set Subject List for 2017 - before the end of year function in December, where it will be announced. (Please bring along all of your suggestions...)

The Ballito Photo Club AGM chairperson election and new commitee nominations will be hosted in March next year but let’s be proactive and get 2017 year off to a good start... before we hand over.

ThE INdEPENdENT ON SATURdAY KZN CLUB PROFILE

The Independent on Saturday is currently featuring one KZN PSSA affiliated club per month. The spread features some of the best submissions from club members along with a brief overview of the club. The Ballito Photo Club has been allocated the month of SEPTEMBER 2017. This is a very exciting initiative arranged by Geoff Feldon and Steve McCurragh from Westville Camera Club who were approached by the Independent on Saturday (IOS).

- The Ballito Photo Club will decide on the IOS Set Subject which will be included in our Set Subject List for 2017.- The Club will select 10 to 15 images and submit these to the IOS.- The IOS will publish a brief profile of the club with the published images, with credit to the photographers.- The copyright will remain with the Photographer and IOS will only reserve the right to re-publish in the IOS only.- ALL photos submitted, MUST have been taken in KZN.- Deadline to IOS - 11 September 2017.- File size required is 1024 x 768 x 180 pixels.

This as a really fantastic opportunity for the Ballito Photo Club.

KZN INTER CLUB COMPETITION 2017

The 2017 KZN Inter Club Competition will consist of the following 2 Categories: OPEN and PORTRAIT. A total of 15 images will be entered in each division by each KZN club with no more than 3 images per photographer will be allowed per category. Competition rules are still be finalised and announced by the PSSA.

We will need to work hard as a Club in order to put forward a strong panel of PORTRAIT images. Sadly wildlife portraits won’t count in this competition... I am confident we can pull it off - we already have some strong Portrait contenders. We just need a few more! To boost our portrait selection different types of Portrait Shots will be included on the SET SUBJECT list for new year. The Inter Club competition closes in April 2017 so we have 4 months to focus on this project...

In the early part of next year the Ballito Photo Club will also host a shoot on location with models, hair, make up and wardrobe... any assistance and suggestions will be appreciated in this regard. The committee will meet shortly to start planning this shoot.

There will be no December Club judging and competition. If you have some spare time maybe get to work on some Portrait shots...

PVPS RESIZING APPFor those who battle with image resizing this is a reminder of the Resizing App developed by Johan Mynhardt which resizes images perfectly - at the click of a button. If you are battling to resize your image to the Photo Vault specifications follow the link posted on our Google+ page. http://johanmynhardt.co.za/pvps/#/ A reminder that the image size for Ballito Photo Club entries is 1280 x 800 pixels @ 96dpi. Portrait images are to be 800 pixels tall. Please also ensure you select “hd Size” as the upload option. Johan has also successfully added a border size adjuster which will enable a thinner boarder if desired. If you are wanting to enter SALONS you will need to size your images accordingly and the resizing app is currently not set up to do this.
