Smoke Test - Checking air-leakage on a Shale Shaker Background: JJP Ltd were commissioned to carry out a smoke leak test on a new type of Shale Shaker coming to market, to confirm the appropriate extract air-flowrates from the shaker and that no unwanted leaks were occurring. With an operating shaker and LEV HVAC system the shaker extract system was tested to ensure it was meeting the required design performance targets. All of this was able to be done in a test facility rather than in an offshore environment.
Figure 1 - Shale Shaker in Smoke Test Facility. The Shaker was enclosed in an air-tight habitat and extract ventilation connected from the top of the Shaker to outside. An Extract Fan and Inverter allowed the extract airflow rate from the Shaker to be varied whilst carrying out the Smoke & Airflow Tests
The Results: After extensive testing JJP Ltd were able to confirm through airflow measurement and by the visual smoke testing that this new Shaker was functioning to the required performance levels. In addition, by varying the extract flowrate the optimum rate could be found to ensure there was no fluid carryover through the duct extract system therefore mitigating any issues that may arise offshore.
